I very much like the look of Harry Maguire. Not the kind of solid, dependable cover we need right now mind

Schmeichel won't come to sit on the bench and I don't like his attitude either, but he's a good keeper.

Whoever signs Will Hughes to a long contract wins, but we're fine in that area.

Agree about Hughes - He will be quality.

I still like Thomas Ince. Pace, versatile & scores goals.

£10m for Ings, are you serious? What in holy **** is going on with football..

I don't get how anyone can say Ings is worth £10m and Jordan Rhodes is only worth £6m?

Ings

21 years old

7 goals at Bournemouth

4 at Dorchester Town

19 at Burnley

Total 115 apps, 38 goals.

(Not including 2 U21 games, 2 goals)

Rhodes

23 years old

1 at Ipswich

7 at Brentford

87 at Huddersfield

39 at Blackburn

Total 251 apps, 136 goals

(Not including 8 U21 games, 8 goals & 11 senior games, 3 goals)

Rhodes has a much better strike-rate, and at a higher level. 1 good half season and Ings seems the 'must-buy' player of the window.

Don't get me wrong, I'd take Ings, but for nowhere near £10m. Rhodes is much much better value for any club in the PL needing a goalscorer.

Because Ings is more then just a goalscorer....

Anyways, in reply to Duncs post. Id go for Hughes, if we can get him, 10m will be a snip, buy him and let him see the season out at Derby.

A defender is a must aswell, whether Maguire can step up to this level I dont know. Id much rather go for someone a little more proven if Im honest.

Schmeichal, always thought maybe/maybe not about him through the years but he is a lot more consistant these days, he isnt a poor player at all to be honest.

Jelavic..forgot about him. No thanks, seems to have gone right off the boil.

Would rather we get a class centreback who can cover leftback to put alongside Lovren and push JH out the picture.

Cheeky decent bid for Vermaelen?

He'd be absolutely perfect for us. A top class centre half who could cover left back. Would enable us to offload both JH and DF as well

Jeremy Mathieu from Valencia is the man you need then, pretty handy anywhere across the back 4.

Too old for the 'project'

bolloaks to the project, can't be any more unsuited than Jos or Fox. We have to have some experienced players to be able to come in and stabilise the ship when required.

NB not to make a separate post but I did hear yesterday who we were looking at at Rennes a while back, Portuguese striker, Oliveira, scores a few goals but wouldn't be cheap and I think he's only on loan there.

Don't disagree- if you're good enough, you're good enough. And frankly the path to CB is hardly chockablock with academy wunderkinds - the likes of Stephens have shown few signs that they're going to make it. If anything, bringing in a jack-of-all-trades, older player would be more prepared to take a backseat to the likes of Shaw, especially if they're also in contention for CB. Possibly the links in the summer with Demichelis, if serious, had a similar rationale.

The only saving grace with buying younger players is obviously their resale value - one reason why Ramirez will never be a complete flop. The same possibly can't be said about Osvaldo - if it's clear he's not cut out for the prem, better to quit while we're relatively ahead than wait and risk a fall in his value.

Jelavic, another example of just how poor the SPL is....

Horsehead will be playing again soon, maybe for the Cup game even...well so they say. Still think they'll go for Lambert though.

not ready for the cup game if thats the FA cup you meant, according to David Golds twitter yesterday.

David Gold ‏@davidgold dec 29

AC could be available in 2/3 weeks. SD 3/4 weeks. WR 5/6 weeks VasTe 3/4 weeks. JT unknown. JC unknown. Ravel should be OK for Fulham. dg

L'Equipe was saying this morning that they could be forced to sell Morrison, didn't read the article though, wasn't interested and couldn't see who would actually give them money for him either.

Alex Goring Crook ‏@alex_crook 6m

Was told today Maya Yoshida has told Japanese media he could leave #saintsfc in January and also that Tadanari Lee will return to J League

Alex Goring Crook ‏@alex_crook 3m

Sounds like Yoshida is frustrated by lack of game time in World Cup year rather than #saintsfc actively looking to sell

Alex Goring Crook ‏@alex_crook 2m

Poch adament #saintsfc wont spend in January but I agree with consensus they need abother centre back. The Astori rumours dont go away

Sounds like some wage bill shifting may well happen which could tie up with Monk's statement that we're looking to get one in.

I know it's not our style but I would love to see serge gnabry come here on loan for the rest of the season. Every time I've seen him he's been brilliant and that didn't change this evening.

Isn't he already supposed to be going on loan somewhere, I think there are a fair few candidates already.

Just been watchin the valencia game feghouli looks a cracking player some great runs inteligent play and good goal.

Also another couple of players we were linked with: pedro piatti. Looks very nippy low centre of gravity good dribbler doesnt always make right decisions but looks like he could be a handfull on his day,he also scored

Most interestingly though ever banega is being kept out of the side at the minute by parejo, so maybe. He could be available now

I'd say he's more suited suited to our system. Rhodes is good but strikes me as being very similar to Peter Crouch. Muriel seems to play in a similar way to Henry and proper Ronaldo, which is exactly what we need.

You've changed your tune, I thought Rhodes was the answer to our footballing prayers ?

Muriel looks good for what its worth, but at what price and would he be allowed to leave ? Not entirely sure he would be the man to lead our line mind, and lets face it, we arent going to give up on Ossie yet, nor should we.

I'd still sign Rhodes, it's good to have different options within the squad and someone big and awkward who knows where the goal is would be ideal in some games. I guess we could get Muriel for £15mill which doesn't seem ridiculous since we've got nearly £40mill not doing a whole lot in Lambert, Osvaldo and Ramirez. I'd rather we signed Kyriakos Papadopoulos over anyone else though.

I hope we do sign a centre back - Hooiveld and Yoshida have been rubbish whenever they have played for us this season and we need players who are good enough to play well whether they are first choice or have to bide their time on the bench for a while. Fonte on the other hand has raised his game every season since we signed him back when we were in League 1. If we signed a quality player to play alongside Lovren, then Fonte would be good backup.

As for a keeper, Boruc and Davis are ok for the moment - it's just a shame that both got injured at the same time. Nevertheless, I wouldn't complain if we were able to sign someone better.

In midfield we have a lot of players and many of them are good players or players with great potential. Nevertheless, we have been unlucky with injuries recently and that has demonstrated that a midfielder who can provide both cover in front of the defence and some attacking intent would be a good addition. For that reason, I still think Banega would be a great addition. He would give us a lot more flexibility in terms of who we play, playing alongside just about any of our other attacking players.

Finally, I think it would be good to see us giving some thought to the development of the next lot of young talent during the second half of the season. In particular, Lloyd Isgrove had a great pre-season and it would be great to see him get a match at some stage this season.
