2013 - How Did We Do

2013 feels like a good year for Saints.

I am sure one of the stattos can put the number of games - wins ./draws and defeats down, but all in all, we stayed up, had a cracking start to the season, got some players into the England team and have beaten Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City and a draw at old Trafford.

Lets see it out on a winning note.

Ups and downs but overly positive.

It started well with draws against Arsenal and Chelsea and a Villa victory, but then things were turned on their head by the sacking of Adkins. Harsh though that decision was at the time, right now it appears to be justified. Under Pochettino the style of play changed, and we scored a few big victories against the big boys, but finished the season scraping draws.

This season started well but has recently taken a down turn, but all in all, by smashing our transfer records in the summer and bringing through the next batch of youth, the future is very positive.

I'm confident and happy about where this club is going, and the way it is doing it, so long may it continue.

A very positive year, in 12 months we've progressed into a very competitive premiership team. We've got some top class players here, and this is now probably the best team in my saints supporting lifetime (when they're all fit, obviously!).

But nothing to really moan about to be honest. The future is certainly very bright.

Agree with this. I think 9th is a pretty damn good position to be in.

We've progressed really well IMO. Let's get some of our injured players fit again and we can push on.

The positives far outweigh the negatives. When this side is fit and clicking we can beat any team in the division. The current hangover is due to the weak squad (as many of us have been pointing out for a year), which in itself is due to our unexpectedly rapid progress over the past three seasons and necessary turnover / non-turnover of playing staff. Two decent windows should sort this, we have much to look forward too.

I wonder if 2014 will be the year that the WUMs / Skate plants, finally **** off...

Very satisfying..overcame the NA ructions fairly seamlessly and, for myself, saw that there was a real plan in place. Promotion was two steps but our ambitions are to be better than any of us could have dreamed, even the press have come round to noting that something special is being put in place here...not achieved yet but isn't it brilliant to be the subject of such positive scrutiny?!

We're certainly a 'work in progress' but I've been blown away by some of the football we have played this year - I text messaged my mate who sits diagonally opposite in the Chapel at half time during the Fulham match with the words 'Was that us?' to get the reply 'If it wasn't it was Barcelona!' Fun, tongue in cheek stuff but that's the feel good factor that 2013 has brought for me! :)

Highlight for me has been the emergence of Lallana as a true Star. I was critical of him at times last season and he struggled at times but the last 3-4 months he has really shown himself to be a player and a man of class. Great to see one of your own not only become a top player but also love it here and seem a top bloke.

Ultimately another year of success, despite all the nonsense put on here at times about how amazing me are the truth was the priority last season was to stay up and this season establish ourselves as a midtable premier league club, we achieved part one relatively comfortably in the end and are well on the way to achieving part two.

We now have first XI which will give anyone a game and if we can add some depth to the squad over the next two transfer windows there is no reason why 2014 can't be even better. maybe then we might even take the cups seriously without people panicking this will mean certain relegation.

Depends on your age of course, but I'd say best year since 2003 and second best since 1990 (or was it 89?). This on its own puts things in perspective as to how we are currently doing. Sunday was IMHO the one and only time this season we've played what I would describe as badly. Great time as a fan, one of the best, and seeing the likes of chambers, jwp and shaw establish themselves as first team players, and lallana, Jrod and lambert get into the England squad, is reason to be very proud. The best thing, though, is that with the current regime, I don't think this is the high water mark, I really do believe the future looks even brighter.

Some of the most entertaining football I've seen in several decades.....even though many of the players were here during Adkins' time, they look like totally different people since MPs arrival.

First choice side (in opening 10 games), looked very good...... unfortunately we don't have enough competence on the bench to cope with our current injury situation, and there is a limit to how many Academy lads you can expect to come in and perform every week, unless they are playing alongside experienced professionals with a decent track record.

Hopefully we'll learn from that next year.

One of the best years in the PL ever but as we are very unlikely ever to get into the top 6 at the end of the season I am disappointed that we never try in the cup competitions - some of my best Saints memories over the past 50 years have been in the FA and League Cups

I have good Cup memories too, but there are two sides to this coin.

Without cup games, you never get the chance to give bench players a proper 90 min. outing to see how they perform.

It's also safer because you know that we won't lose three points (as we have done recently).... by playing those who really aren't first team material anyway.
