Cardiff v Saints build up

Batman

Recommended Posts

This side (since 2009) have always had a habit of bouncing back strong after a poor performance/run of results.

We could really do with a win here, otherwise it could be 10 or 11 without a win.

Gazza, Chambers, Fonte, Lovren, Shaw, Schneiderlin, Cork, JWP, Lallana, Rodriguez, Osvaldo.

2-1 Saints

We're going to this one and personally a bit worried about getting turned over. The support for their manager at Anfield was emphatic and I reckon this fixture has come at a really bad time. For me, other injuries aside, Boruc has been a huge loss and Gazza just doesn't have any goalkeeper qualities in his locker whatsoever. Anyone at the past few games will agree. With Chelsea & Everton to come after that we need the points and truly hoping the lads can prove me wrong. I'd take a draw while we continue to work towards getting the squad fit.

We have to play Cropper, if he makes one save he'll have done better than Gazzaniga yesterday. If he's not even as good as Gazza then he shouldn't be with the club.

I can't believe that people are saying there's no difference between chambers and Clyne. Clyne far superior IMO.

I have to agree, the worst that can happen is he's poor as well and lets in a few goals. The "safe" option of playing Gazza means we're also likely to let in a few goals, so...

Hopefully Shaw & Fonte are back at the very least. The other question really is whether to persist with Lambert (who was awful yesterday and as the games come thick and fast will get even worse as he tires out), give Gallagher a start (bit of a risk given how important victory is) or Play Rodriguez as the striker and bring Ramirez or JWP into the midfield.

Really do need to win this and get a little bit of momentum as the Everton and Chelsea matches will not be pretty if we go into them low on confidence.

Just praying there are a few players back for this, would hope to see Clyne, Shaw and Fonte at least return to the starting line up. By the way, where was Osvaldo yesterday? Didn't see him mentioned anywhere, usually a thread criticising him escalates after a defeat even when he doesn't play! Looking forward to this game, but really need to get our season back on track

Ideally none of Fox, Jos and Gazza will be playing.

For Fox not to play we would need 1 of Clyne or Shaw to be fit. If neither we're fit we could play Chambers left and Cork or Davis at right back.

For Jos to be dropped we would need Fonte to be fit. If Fonte isn't fit, then I would rather play Cork there. I would even play Yoshida.

Gazza is more tricky. The only alternative seems to be Cropper. If he isn't being considered at the moment, I can only conclude he isn't very good. Alternatively, we could play Cork there.

I'd throw Boruc in goal with a sling on....would be better.

Sod it, Toni Jimenez...

With the same team as yesterday, I can see us coming away with no points.

We really couldn't do any worse than a few players yesterday...

With this in mind, I'd go for the below (assuming a few people will be fit):

Cropper

Clyne - Fonte - Lovren - Shaw

Cork - Schneiderlin

Lallana - Ramirez/Davis - J Rod

Gallagher/Lee

Rickie looked seriously off pace yesterday and is either in need of a rest or is carrying an injury. Pointless playing him when we have two other available fit strikers in Gallagher and Lee.

If Fonte is still mysteriously out then bring in Yoshida. Hoovield and Fox shouldn't be anywhere near the team no matter how desperate we are.

Everton and Chelsea after this so a win would be quite handy. I'm not optimistic as we just don't look like we've got a clean sheet in us at the moment. We've gone back to the start of last season where we could score 3 goals and we'd still lose. I'm thinking maybe a score draw, 2-2.

If Fonte is still not fit, I would play Yoshida not Jos.

No way should Gallagher or Lee start ahead of Lambert, even if he is off form.

Lee

If Lambert were to be taken out then JR up front with Gaston or JWP coming in is the better option.

doubt if we'll ever see Lee again, certainly not in the PL anyway. He got some sort of reprieve but he'll be packed off back to Japan very soon, might even be on the same plane as Maya. Neither seem to have any future with us.

I am getting annoyed with Poch's lack of direct response when asked about injuries and the way he hides behind the interpreter (not literally).

He says we are not going to be active in January yet he doesnt give any outlook on injuries to calm the fans fears, so the fans are left questioning the clubs strategy.

I dont want to see wholesale changes in January but it is clear as day we need a CB and LB. When 99% of the fan base cringed at the thought of Jos and Fox playing yesterday it is safe to say we need to strengthen in those areas. Yoshida, Turnball and Stephens are not the answer. Dont know enough about Taggett to be fair to form an opinion.

If we have clyne, shaw and fonte back for cardiff then I will be optimistic but anything less, then I fear the worst.

What Mauricio says about transfer activity and what will actually happen are two different things. We're obviously going to bring in a keeper and probably a central defender/left back. He's not going to say here's our shopping list come and get our money because we're desperate, that is not the Southampton Way.

Another one who shouldn't be anywhere near the team and isn't thank god.

With the exception of a tap in, I didn't see Lambert making any impact on the game whatsoever yesterday.

Agree with J Rod possibly up front though. Just thought as he's been so effective playing out on the left recently, why change his position?

What's up with Osvaldo, is he available?

doesn't figure in the build up galleries at all so probably not in training last week, certainly not at the end that counts anyway.

Could be suspended by the club for getting involved in some sort of scuffle last week, could be injured or sick because that would explain his performance and early substitution last week. Could have gone back to Italy to get divorced or married or something, these lads seem to like doing that. Cavani just suddenly walked out of training at PSG last week to go back to Uruguay to get a divorce. Could be negociating a transfer who knows, don't really care, a very expensive acquisition for his contribution thus far.

Aaron Martin is still on our submitted squad list I think, don't know where he is though, could be on loan, could be training with the youth, no idea. Don't think he'll get promoted to the first team group.

Would probably have him instead of Hooiveld.

How can you be so sure?

Because he's an intelligent man and those positions cannot be covered from our academy just now. Shaw is injury and illness prone, Fox is just useless prone and we aren't going to play Targett all of a sudden. As for the keeper the evidence was clear yesterday KD looks like long term and Boruc has a broken hand, might be back soon but another whack on it could put us back to square 1 in an instant.

Osvaldo wasn't fit, Fonte has an ankle problem I believe. Boruc has been out for a little over three weeks. Gazzaniga is really underconfident. Unsurprising really, has hardly had a game in more than a year. Some of the SMS crowd are a disgrace, sarcastic cheers when he catches a ball, small wonder he looks like a rabbit in the headlights. And some are looking to put Cropper into the firing line, I bet he's glad he isn't playing behind that defense, the real problem.

Clyne I believe was back in training last week. Fonte doesn't seem to be ready for a full game yet. It appears to me that Hooiveld's problem hinges on his total one footedness. Whenever he is under pressure and wrong sided he still tries to clear with his left foot. Yoshida would be my choice with Lovren. Clyne, Chambers or Shaw for full back. Cork and Schneiderlin in midfield. With Lallana, Ramirez, Rodriguez and Lambert at the front. However I expect Pochettino to pick either Davis or JWP ahead of Ramirez.

Hold on, what? Chambers is not a natural RB and is a creative midfielder? Holy crap!!

OK, I just checked the OS....For a midfielder he is doing an even more amazing job for our club than I thought!! :D

Edit: in my defence, I have never claimed to know a lot of the important stuff. I just shout and cheer a lot and hope for the best.
