Turkish Posted 23 December, 2013 Share Posted 23 December, 2013 So if we finish 8th then most teams are BETTER than us...?? And talking about lineups we can do in january when the fa cup is played perhaps since it´s not the same competition that has been discussed? Not one single person on this fourm has said that we would be relegated if we played our strongest team in the league cup. What has been said is that it is obvious (and for very good reasons) that the league cup is not a priority for the club. Does that mean we go out and lose on purpose, of course not. But the club has decided that first priority is PL and I for one support that 100%. I'm not quite sure what your first point is meant to mean. Secondly the point being that we played virtually a full strength team against Lowe league opposition in the FA cup 4th round. Yet we still managed to struggle along that season and finish 8th,
Sour Mash Posted 23 December, 2013 Share Posted 23 December, 2013 Because playing our reserves in the League will probably get us relegated and we will need a decent League finish to attract better players. Creative, but at no point did I say every League game. Even 5 games with the reserves is too many with such a tight and competitive League. Not one single person on this fourm has said that we would be relegated if we played our strongest team in the league cup. . Lighthouse thinks it'd probably get us relegated. League cup (that´s been discussed on this forum lately) is extra midweek games and a different setup.

Sour Mash Posted 23 December, 2013 Share Posted 23 December, 2013 Sorry to drag this up again but does show, we really don't have anywhere near the depth to play our first team in the cups. Imagine yesterday's team with Lovren and Lallana injured, away at Everton... Yes, but the point is also that FA Cup is played weekends instead of league games. League cup (that´s been discussed on this forum lately) is extra midweek games and a different setup. No, the post that kicked this conversation off again, was the one from Lighthouse, he was talking about cups in general, which is what people are responding to. So people are responding to things happening in the future since Fa cup hasn´t been played yet and nobody knows what team we put out there? I´m impressed, do those people perhaps know the lottery numbers for next week too?

CB Fry Posted 23 December, 2013 Share Posted 23 December, 2013 Just to clear this up: My argument - We can't play the same team in every league and cup match. Playing a weakened side in the League could get us relegated. The Turkish/Fry Strawman - Everyone who wins a cup gets relegated. Wigan FFS! FFS! Wigan Wigan FFS! FFS! FFS! etc. You are the one dropping the R word into every comment about Cup runs. You're equating cup runs with relegation time and again - you've even done it again here. Hilariously, you are so obsessed with relegation and cups going hand in hand you are trying to rewrite history for the most successful Saints team in a generation as having "relegation form". Eighth effing place - Eighth! - kinda shows that up as a strawman made from all the straw in Hampshire. Our parody of you is spot on. You are nuts. If we carry on like we did against Villa and Spurs relegation is a real possibility. I can't believe the complacency you show CB FRY. Dangerous, very dangerous. Lighthouse Posted 23 December, 2013 Share Posted 23 December, 2013 Lighthouse thinks it'd probably get us relegated. Do you believe: a) We have good depth in our squad and injuries to first team players wont affect the team's performance. b) The majority of our strongest 11 are fit enough to start 45 games a season c) We should rest our best players for half a dozen League games and the points lost in doing so aren't important. I just wanted to say that I would not use those games as reasons why could possibly get relegated. There are much worse teams out there than us....besides we already have 24 points:) - a win against Cardiff would be welcome though.
captainchris Posted 23 December, 2013 Share Posted 23 December, 2013 Fck me turning on him after a defeat. Yes we had a ****e defence but cannot all be levelled at MP. Problems is fans can't handle defeats and think we are world beaters and need a scapegoat. If we dominate Cardiff and get a result will it mean he is a good manager again? It's just forum mate - no need for a paddy is there....

I'm with you regarding not playing our strongest side in the cups, but I also feel we are good enough to still finish in the top 8. Frank's cousin Posted 23 December, 2013 Share Posted 23 December, 2013 24 points, I am sure that will be enough for safety. Thanks for reasurring me, think we can get the deckchairs out. Hahaha... Gotta laugh at the clowns on here, even those deliberately playing the WUM special wrist slitting. we have a policy to bring in youth. That means that the back up will lack experience as in Gazza, we also have players who despite not perhaps having the quality to help us progress, played a huge part over the last few seasons as part of that progress (Jos and Fox). I find it pretty sad that some on here are so thick-el (intended) that they insult those in our squad who HAVE made a contribution to our progress. They train, they accept they are not first team, and do what they can when we have 6 first teasers out.... we we also played some nice stuff, scored two nice goals and but for comedy defending, which we knew would happen did ok.... Yet the usual numpties spread their vicious Bo lox for what end? 9th at virtually the halfway stage is progress, whatever the early promise suggested. We won't go out and buy large numbers of players when within another 12 months the kids will have more experience. Ok so maybe a keeper and a Cb, but apart from that I would say things look very bright given how quickly some these youngsters seem to integrate. yes it was diss appointing, but that's all. Yes we are 9th, but we are sliding not on the way up. It is not a WUM to say that at 24 points and with a real slump in form on our hands, that we must avoid being dragged into the relegation fight. The hay-like aroma of a beautifully constructed strawman argument. "Rest our best players for half a dozen league games?" What guff. Can you name one club - and I will give you every single domestic cup quarter finalist for the last twenty years to chose from - that have done anything remotely like that? krissyboy31 Posted 23 December, 2013 Share Posted 23 December, 2013 (edited) For the first time I really started questioning Poch's tactics, selections and substitutions. Really disappointed with the shape of the team. We were lopsided from the off. After the own goal Joss should have been subbed because his head had totally gone. I don't think the 3rd goal would have happened if he had have been, yet he took off Cork, who was one of our better performers, leaving Morgan too much to do. Some very odd decisions and lately. Someone described it as career suicide which is slightly OTT but not far off. + I questioned the high tempo game plan during the summer as didnt think we could sustain it with such a small squad. Similar to last season the pressing game causes tiredness and injuries and then a long spell of poor results follows......

Charlie Wayman Posted 23 December, 2013 Share Posted 23 December, 2013 Indeed. Like I said, given his claim that he didn't wait for 5 defeats in a row to happen before sacking a manger when defending Adkins dismissal you have to wonder if 4 defeats in 6 has made him preplan something else. If we lose 2 or even all 3 of the next 3 - which let it be said is quite possible and not at all unlikely - it will be very difficult for Pochettino to defend his position; Cortese will be in effect be forced to take some sort of action to stop the rot. This may be too soon to appoint a new manager even for our Master Strategist but no doubt the process is now in full swing in earnest. Bookies favourite is our old friend Roberto de Matteo so don't be surprised to see him here around January 13/14th.
SaintSparky Posted 23 December, 2013 Share Posted 23 December, 2013 Since we were saved from extinction I have been a very happy Saint; it has been very rare that I've seen any reason to be angry with our team as a whole (even with a few to many individual moments of incompetence in recent games); yesterday was sadly such a day as we were an utter shambles. Frankly it does not say much for Spurs that they did not stick at least six goals past us in the second half alone yesterday; I am thankful they didn't however if we do not significantly improve at the basics it will only be a matter of days before someone does hammer us. Time to put that one behind us and get back to doing what we do well; starting with a proper performance and hopefully a win at Cardiff. Come on you Saints! Merry Xmas to Saints everywhere. S-Clarke Posted 23 December, 2013 Share Posted 23 December, 2013 After Gallagher come on, Ward-Prowse went to RB and Chambers went to LB. How did Chambers get on at LB? He's an accomplished player, so the sort of player who could put in a shift anywhere if you asked him to. He's not spectacular, but an excellent squad player to have.
