Saints 2 V 3 Spurs Reaction thread

Don't get that! Gaston I thought looked good today. Osvaldo wasn't playing!

Really? I thought he was lightweight, gave the ball away numerous times, doesn't have the pace to close down and he doesn't look like he has the energy to do much at all. Such a shame, expected (and wanted) brilliant things from him and I'm usually over optimistic but I do feel his talent lies elsewhere - probably in Spain. He'll be great there.

The real world facts are that, while we do have a lack of depth (almost all PL teams do), nothing can really legislate for losing between 4 and 6 of them at the same time. And we've been missing three or four of the back five, the springboard for our early-season success, almost since the bad run started.

I still feel that - with all of today's poor individual performances, and with Fox in the side - if we had partnered Yoshida with Lovren we wouldn't have lost like that, we may not have lost at all, and we may even have won.

Agreed. but after the Villa game there were plenty on here who never wanted to see Yoshida playing for us ever again.....

We were poor today (bar AL and Cork) and Spurs were up for it. JRod makes it 2-0 ...... and we would still have struggled to get anything from that game with that line-up.

Hopefully Shaw and Fonte will play on Thu, i would play our 4th choice keeper, the 3rd choice has completely lost the plot.

Never mind about the top 6. Just staying in the Premier is an achievement. This should be our main objective, always was, always will be, all that matters.

We won't go down this year, but I can see us finishing in the 11th-14th bracket, which would be a little disappointing given the investment and the hopes engendered by our competitive start to the season.

Just not true at all today. He wanted the ball.

Although I'm disappointed that our form has dropped off over the last 6 games I wanted to get some perspective by looking at last season and comparing it to this.

I am happy to share this with you:

last season: won 4, lost 10, drawn 3, goals for 22, goals against 33, points 15, position 17th.

this season: won 6, lost 5, drawn 6, goals for 22, goals against 18, points 24, position 9th.

My conclusion: we have made progress, no need to panic just yet - in January we can improve the squad.

Against Villa Yoshi got done on Agbonlahor's fast break and I'm pretty sure that Fonte would have been done by it too. Apart from that, Yoshi didn't play badly in a team that generally played well - especially as he's been very short of game time, so - to me - he didn't deserve the abuse he received on here.

As far as today is concerned, I'd discount most of the poor performances in front of our back four because their emphasis switched from playing their normal game to keeping an eye on the inevitable problems that would come from the Jos/Fox partnership. And, with Lovren playing on the other side, there was no real balance or solid positional play at the back - all compounded by a lack of confidence in the guy behind them.

Until Spurs equalized, I though we looked quite good.

I predicted 14th to 18th, I would be happy with anything other than 18th, obviously.

The simple fact is that we don't have a big squad or strength in depth. We have done amazingly well with teenage players coming in. If anybody had given me top half early in the season I would have been delighted. I can't imagine Cortese and Poch not strengthening in Jan.

The suicide squad need to take a reality check and realise that Spurs squad is so deep that Adeboya was training with the kids a couple of weeks agod. They even had Defoe to come on late.

OK we had a bad day, but we've had plenty of good ones to balance it out.

the important thing is to ensure we can beat the bottom half teams with injuries and suspensions.

It was obvious that the absence of Shaw was critical, we must get cover for him.

Precisely. Even if we finish 17th, we will have been successful

Am I alone in being a little bit disappointed in Poch? Surely he witnessed the Swansea game?! To play Fox again was crazy. If Spurs had a decent manager/scouting system they would have attacked the right wing from minute 1 and would have had a massacre on their hands. He could have played Cork at RB & Chambers at LB.

Why was he so secretive in the post match interview? He wouldn't answer any questions.

I like the manager, I don't think he gets all that much wrong in the grand scheme of things, but today however he must take his fair share of the incoming flak because methinks his calls played a significant part in todays defeat.

When Luke Shaw is out injured then he continues to place his faith in Danny Fox, but this player lets him down every bloody time! When are we ever going to learn this? I'm reliably told that the Full Back position is not the most difficult one to master in the game but watching Fox today you'd be hard pressed to believe it - indeed I've seldom seen a player at this level with a worse positional sense. MP has had plenty of time now to devise a satisfactory solution for this ingrained structural weakness in our current squad - indeed he eventually found one today when he swapped Chambers over to the left and played Ward-Prowse in the right back position - but far too late to effect the outcome. This must never happen again.

I've already expressed my opinions re Gazzaniga and the blame for that unsatisfactory situation lays elsewhere IMO, but if Fonte is fit enough for the bench then surely serious consideration must be given to starting with him and seeing how long he lasts. In any case Maya Yoshida is a better technical player than Jos 'own goal' Hooiveld will ever be. It may well be that we just don't yet possess the strength in-depth in our squad to rest key players when it is not absolutely necessary to do so. If that is true then we must continue to ask lot of our better players and hope they can cope until we can strengthen.

But todays questionable calls go beyond the matter of team selection. On 63 minutes moments before Spurs took the throw-in (that led directly to their wining goal) MP made the call to substitute Jack Cork (who had done little wrong IMO) for James Ward-Prowse. Is it's not a IRON LAW of the game that you never disrupt a team when they are defending a situation like that? Not something that can be proved of course, but I think delaying this substitution by a few minutes and that particular goal may not be conceded.

Hay, we're all Human so therefore we all make mistakes ... but no win in six now and we saw a few too many mistakes out there today I reckon.

Completely missed the game and only just fast-forwarded through the recording.

Some decent movement early on, Adam outstanding, JRod missed a chance to put us 2 up that would have been vital.

IMO most of the defensive fragility that is the exact opposite of where we were 8 games ago comes from a complete lack of confidence in the keeper. Ho doesn't dominate, doesn't leave his line, has made no significant save. Desperately need Artur back.

Compounded by an awful performance from Jos. I assume there's some logic in still resting Fonte but I don't get it.

Chambers has shown himself to be a good deputy for Clyne. Cork is different to VW but a strong choice. All other replacements in defence are a liability.

We must restore some confidence against Cardiff. Try Cropper, he can't be worse. Fonte, Shaw back, please.

Now need to dull the pain with wine.

I have had 6 bottles of magners, one bottle of champers whilst doing the roast and now on the corona, it helps a little.

Not a skate, a knowledgeable Saint with more realistic goals with the squad, management and owners thats all, the clappers will never grasp reality of where we actually are and how big we are, call me a reality check and a public service.

It doesn't mater whether you post as dune, cheese on toast or whatever you are still the same tiresome bore.

Anybody could have foreseen that with the pressing game, injuries would have happened, and that there were glaring problems at backup for GK and LB, let alone CB. Very poor substitution decisions and reactions as well as initial selection. Very disappointed.

Biggest mistake today was taking of Jack Cork. He was playing pretty good ad was instrumental in our first goal. He did well when he moved into the center of defense. No wonder they got their 3rd goal when he was taken off. Should have taken off Rodriguez or Lambert who were appalling today. Chambers at left back would give Shaw a run for his position. Getting better by the game. Gallagher should have come on earlier. Another star in the making.

We're just 7 points better off than last year. Will be interesting if Atkins tally doesn't top Pochettino's come mid January.

Pochettino waited far too long to make the substitutions and got it very wrong taking off Cork

Cork went into central defence? Failed to spot that one.

Seriously, this Fox bashing has to stop. Just who is going to play understudy to an U18 year old? Fox wasn't even that bad. No protection at all.

To me, Poch has to take the blame for that. To sub Cork was criminal. If he wanted to change the midfield then Morgan (worst game for a while) or Davies should have gone. Lallana was the best player on the pitch first half, faded a little second half but that's more to do with us getting the ball to him.

Jay, Rickie, complete off days.

Gaston did more in 15 mins than Jay all game.

Chambers looks like the real deal. Lovren is a top 4 player. Jos and Gaz just infuse panic. Lovren toward's the end was losing his rag with both of them. I don't blame Fox at all - play Fox with Boruc, Fonte, Lovren and Chambers/Clyne and we would not have conceded 3 goals. Play Shaw with Gaz, Jos, Lovren and Chambers/Clyne and we would still have conceded the goals we did today.

That game was there for the winning after we got it back to 2-2. To take Cork off was just plain nuts.

As we stand at the moment, we aren't going to keep a clean sheet for a while. Would rather see us go all out attack. Lallana, Gaston, Jay, as the three attacking midfielders and take your pick up front out of Lambert/Osvaldo.

Cork, to me, has been more than adequate replacement for Wanyama. It's the defence that needs sorting, which ain't going to happen until everybody is fit, so let's roll back to last year and go at teams more. I don't care if Gaston loses the ball in the last 3rd trying to create, the same way I don't care if Adam does. His job is to create. Others defend for him.

We've nothing to lose now, might as well go for it.

Woah, whats up with the forum tonight.

We have massive injury issues and a young squad.

This particularly affects us at the back when you have to play gazza, chambers, fox and jos its basically an untested back line, what do people expect against £100m plust worth of talent who are trying to make a point? seriosuly. Threads about players being unfit to wear the shirt, player bashing left right and centre.... did we all turn in to skates this afternoon, we are better than this surely? What happened to the days of going a goal down and immediately cheering on the team?

I don't even see this as a concerning run tbh, we matched arsenal, outplayed chelsea for 65min, totally outplayed city for 75min (the only game they have dropped points in recently) and drawn with newcastle away (another top team on form!)...

It is a young squad with a lot of injuries... On paper our first 11 is good enough to challenege for europe.... but we this injury crisis combined with playing the top teams in the league was a perfect storm for us....

I'm actually enjoying watching the kids do well... Especially the city game where they came back, showed their metal and actually outplayed the champions in waiting.

Chambers looks a great player for me, we all can see shaw is quality, JWP has a good future for sure and now Gallagher looks promising along with reed etc. Plus I always love watching Lallana play and have done since league 1.

Rome was not built in a day... we will not win every game, and when we are not how about people get behind the team on here instead of slamming them and the club. We can't build a top squad in 1 full season in the top flight so for the time being, enjoy the climb and enjoy watching the kids develop.... I love watching our british saints (with a hint of foreign quality) strutting their stuff. Something of the babes in the making about them.

On a side note, I literally think Lovren is the best CB in the prem at times. Graceful on the ball, good marker, passes well.... does he know how to miss a tackle under pressure? Love watching him play! Who'd have thought we'd have a player like him when we were bottom of league 1 and pardew got sacked! Get a grip people, we weren't going to win the league this season! Stop acting like our second string should beat spurs with a point to prove! Chrsit!

Saint86 I was just about to post almost exactly the same. What a great post and absolutely spot on. I'm loving every minute of this season, those 18 year olds will be 22 year old internationals before know it. As you say this is a time to enjoy not to criticise.

Bright spots for me yesterday were Chambers who is going to make it tough for Clyne to claim his place back. The other positive for me was that Gaston for once came on and showed his class and along with JWP helped us stamp some authority on the game but all too late though.

We all know Hos, Fox, and Gazza are not up to it, so does the manager and the players, but they've all we got at the moment so we need to make the best of it.

You know what Saints are like, they'll probably beat Everton and Chelsea now.

27 points at Christmas that will do nicely.

Those thinking Gaston was good when he came on, must have been supping away at their hip flasks to believe that: ball to Gaston stop and dither like Gazza debating whether to leave his line.

When we conceded a goal we seem to be in shock for 5 minutes afterwards, and disappear slightly into our shells.

A little voice at the back of my head questions how long will NC poke up with the current malaise, but then that could just be triggered by all the carrying on happening at other clubs.

it would be interesting to see how many goals have gone in since VW has been out. I only saw some of the game on tv but Cork seemed to get caught or lose possession a few times. As for the goals i think that Fox should have got in front of Adebayor , or at least crowd him out. There was no real attempt to get to the ball, the 2nd Jos was at fault and as for the third, my wife said 'that bloke with the beard messed up again' Jos what were you doing yesterday???

Cork gave the ball away for their second goal, he's not good in the tackle. You need to stop saying silly things and displaying your little Englander ex pat mentality ART.

Gaston wasn't brilliant but he made a difference and crucially he started to make things happen. He needs a run in the team to scrape off the rust. Way more effective than Lambo today and that breaks my heart as I fear Rickie may have peaked in 2012.

Well given this interview here it might not be long. 'I don't want to lose 5 games in a row before I sack the manager I do it before it happens'

We've lost 4 in 6.
