Saints 2 V 3 Spurs Reaction thread

Yes we defended terribly, and too many players had bad games, Jay-rod and Davis in particular, but if Jay-Rod buried that chance to make it 2 0 it might all have been different.

Their 2nd and 3rd goals came from ricochets, though to be fair, they tore us apart after the 3rd. Also, why did Lovren not close Soldado down quicker for their first ?

The squad looks paper thin at the moment. We really do need a back-up centre half, and left back and GK.

Didn't think we played too well as a team - as a unit - but unfortunately it was also punctuated with some poor individual performances. I would have hoped that Pochettino and his staff were aware by now that Hooiveld and Fox in the same team on the same side of defence is an utter disaster. I have no idea what they were expecting. They just aren't up to scratch as a pair. Nice guys but if the club are going to continue to talk about Europe then they need to get real with some of the players in the squad.

We're still having a good season, but some of the issues with the depth and the balance of the squad are clearly evident right now. I just hope it is as clear to the club as it is to the fans.

No real danger so far out wide and no one closing the back four down in numbers. Still think Gazza should have claimed the cross. #bottled.

There were 3 players playing today who are quite clearly nowhere near good enough for this league. Everyone knows who they are. If we have any aspirations of being a top 8 side we need to bring in a left back, centre half and a goalkeeper in January pretty urgently. In reality we have a squad of 15 players good enough and we need 20 minimum. Really is that simple

Rather post something about the game fella. The WUMs will look after themselves as required.

As opposed to the forum rules...?

Lambert was awful as well, either hes not fit or have his legs have gone because he's not been the same player since his England call up. Their movement from their strikers was night and day. Feel sorry for Lallana and Chambers as they were superb

I'll agree with everyone else on defence/goalkeeping, but there were at least positives to take from the game:

- Lallana was clearly excellent, he was all over the pitch, a proper captain's performance.

- Gallagher looked good when he came on, great run too late on.

- Gaston showed flashes of class, although still failed to do some of the simple things.

- Lovren we excellent as always, and more importantly was getting visibly frustrated at Hooiveld and Gazzanigga; if MoPo really was planning on signing nobody in January, I think Lovren may have a few words to say to him about that.

- Fox wasn't actually too bad, I guess?

- No horrendous refereeing decisions, which is a nice rarity.

Had more chances and possession than Spurs but undone by defensive frailties. We're a different proposition with Boruc, Shaw, Clyne and Fonte in the back 5 and Wanyama sitting in front of them.

Onwards and upwards...

I agree but why are the club going to keep talking about Europe if the depth in the squad can't cope with a 38 game season to the level required? I would much rather the club state their ambition but not put timelines on it. There is no way anyone at the club can think our squad is good enough over a 10 month season but they kept running their mouth so now they have to face the criticism that results like this brings. They can't have it both ways.

Lallana was offside for our second goal !! But that's not the ref's decision.

I don't recall the club explicitly putting a timeframe on "european qualification".... yes, the players or manager will always answer "Why not?" when a journo asks them if we can qualify for Europe this year but that's just a neutral / non-committal answer and simply shows how positive the mindset of the players and manager is.

Only people on this forum ever thought that surely?

What a difference 3 weeks make, ever since Chelseas first goal and Boruc was injured things just haven't gone our way. Huge injury list, defensive mistakes that we managed to avoid for the first 10 matches. I don't think that we have played too badly for most of the last 6 matches but this run of results can erode the confidence of the most spirited squads.

Now Cardiff and Everton away followed by Chelsea at home !! Things could get worse before hopefully getting better.

Recent run has parallels with the first MOPO matches followed by the limp end to the season.

Disappointing stuff. Anyone know why Dani wasn't playing? Assuming Shaw had a knock and Clyne wasn't quite ready? Some positives -Lallana, Chambers and a goal from open play for Rickie. Too many negatives, though - Fox, Gazza and Jos the main ones. Surely Jos is going to be investigated soon by the match fixing investigation team with the rate of own goals he's getting? 4 in a season and a half and he's not even been a regular!

Also, "how does the Fox play? Sh*t, Sh*t, sh*t, sh*t, sh*t, sh*t, sh*t..."

Merry Xmas all!

Oh dear! Fox, Hooiveld and Gazza were very poor. Lovren started to lose the plot towards the end. Maybe a couple of half decent loans to replace those 3 and be back up is no bad thing. Lallana superb though. Rickie looked fed up, even after his goal. Anyone know if anything is going on with him in the background?

We were poor, I expected nothing less. Am I worried? Not on the slightest. We know we have no good defensive back up, it highlights how far we are off 'the next level'. Boruc, Shaw and Clyne can't come back soon enough. Also, note to Roy Hodgson, book a plane ticket for Lallana to Brazil, you'd be stupid not to

Can only assume that Poch is making a point (despite what he says) to NC that squad must be improved in January. Would be an insult to the Championship to say our defence today should play there. Okay, it was basically a reserve defence but lose starters to injury and that is all we are left with. This league has long since left Jos, Fox and Gazza behind and for that matter possibly Rickie too. The quality of opponent is simply beyond them and it would be pointless to wait until after the WC before strengthening. If we never had an injury we could win this league (maybe), but that doesn't happen and most of our second tier players don't belong in the PL. The top teams (who we are trying to emulate) certainly do have quality in reserve and can ride out periods such as we are having, whereas we cannot. On the bright side, I assume Poch is no longer being considered for the Spurs job ....

A couple more defeats and he won't even be considered for the Saints job, NC will axe him if we don't win any of our next 3.
