All the Saints Book

9-3

Recommended Posts

Agreed. It is a great book and I'd encourage every Saints fan to buy it.

I've got three boxed and ready to give out as Xmas presents, really looking fd to them being opened and having a little look myself. Thoroughly endorse the appeal to buy one, shocking that these guys who have produced some of the most acclaimed sports books around are sitting on a shed load of their own money and with no distribution deal. We are truly lucky to have the history of the club chronicled in such depth and with such loving detail, has any other club got anything half as good as In That Number?

Please buy one if you can!

I'll bump this again, and agree. Buy this book, Saints fans.

I want it.

I won't get it. I don't have any Saints fans in my family.

But I will get Christmas money, so I'll blow it on that instead. In fact, next Christmas I might buy everyone in my family a copy, to teach them all about the wonder that is SFC's history. (...and that includes my Norwich-supporting wife. :-) )

Saw it but £35 for info that is freely available on Google! What's the point?
:mcinnes:

Well you just go find it all Buster. All the photographs, anecdotes, design, layout, production, print and distribution. Go track down all the ex players still living and interview them.

Do you really think that these guys do it for a profit? I think that they'll be lucky to break even.

it would help if Duncan pasted a page or so on here to give a taste of what people are buying. £35 is quite a lot of money for a book

Tell you what, I'll scan all 536 pages (which includes front and back covers, index etc). Then I'll post them up here piecemeal. Then you copy them and take them away to get printed and bound. Probably only cost you....a tad more than £35.

I have ALL of the Hagiology output, including both hard and softback copies of Dell Diamond. Each a masterpiece in it's own right.

Rant over.

A BIG THANK YOU TO DUNCAN, GARY AND DAVID FOR ANOTHER MASSIVE LABOUR OF LOVE.

Nick you would be better browsing your local Waterstones. It is expensive but it is lavishly put together at a cost of £55000 and weights 2.3kgs. I am convinced it is good value. Cheers

Christmas will be going down hill very quickly if I am not un-wrapping a copy on Christmas Afternoon! I have dropped enough hints and "lead the horse to water".

Every book these boys have produced has been spot on, and to all Saints fans worth every single penny.

I have a Wimbledon (old money) supporting friend who everytime him and his wife have stayed for the weekend can at some point be found carrying on from where he last left off reading through In That Number. He is amazed that folks have gone to so much effort to produce such a "stunning history superbly presented".

Just to let you know I have had an order outstanding with Waterstones since the 3rd Dec i.e. 18 days and it still says "Order being processed" and "Waiting to be picked from out warehouse".

I would like to know

Have Hagiologist supplied Waterstones with any copies since the 3rd Dec ?

or whether Waterstones are only supplying full price orders ? (and they hope I will cancel).

.....

As I live in Bournemouth and the book appeared to be "handled by Waterstones" (i.e. shop signings in Southampton) I went to the 2 branches down here over the w/.e 30 Nov-1st Dec and was told they didn't have it in the shop and was directed to their web site.

I ordered from their online services on the 3rd Dec, (which just so happened when they were offering FREE DELIVERY and a 15% discount on books over £25). i.e. the Order price was £29.75.

On 8th Dec I received an email saying [TABLE]

At the same time they changed their web site from "Available" to " Available to order Usually despatched in 1-2 weeks".

^^ Well that's a bit rubbish from Waterstones.

As I understand it, the shops bought a batch of 1,000 on the back of SFC going back on their agreement to stock it in the club megastore. No idea what the situation is with online.

Also, as I understand it, the authors make more money from it if its bought direct. Probably worth noting that if you send a PM to Fitzhugh Fella he'll ping you details of how you can get the book straight from them.

Sorry John, I know that does you no favours! I hope the book comes through soon for you.

This was the last book similar to the new one and it was brilliant. I've read it cover to cover many times and even now will still flick through it when I hear of a deceased former player or something of that ilk. It's "the bible" for any Saints fan, as I suspect the new one will be.

I also want to get Suited and Booted, to learn more about the Saints pre-war. Some serious hinting required to get the wife to submit...

Saint John - yes we have kept Waterstones fully supplied, but the cluster that involves Southampton, Lymington, Fareham, Salisbury, Eastleigh, Andover and Winchester does not stretch to the Bournemouth branches. I have tonight e mailed your comments to the manager of the region who is called Ross (CL27@Waterstones.com). Waterstones have been excellent for us but it seems their communication system has let you and us down. The programme shop will be selling copies prior to tomorrow's game and the Guide Dog in Bevois Valley has got copies too (ask Margaret the land lady). Plus Kenny G has some around his flat near the Ave - all venues will charge £30. HTH.

Simples - the book has only been out three weeks, if you have paid for it and provided postage you should have it by now, if you did not include postage it has been available to be collected from either Eastleigh, Otterbourne, Salisbury, Bristol or Rownhams. E mail on Duncan@duncanholley.co.uk if you are having problems.

The Alphabet was good for its time but All the Saints is way deeper and of course in full colour all 520 pages. Thanks for the plug SNSUN

Hi Saint John - just had this reply in response to your post

Hi Duncan,

Our central team have had some problems configuring the website with regards to the book (its usually pretty automated from Neilson - hence the problems). First it was listed at intenet discount price, now back to full price. The biggest problem has been setting it up so that when you go to order, it should only route through to 'reserve and collect' - and explain you can reserve it in a store and collect it at your leisure - however this hasn't been happening and caused us numerous problems.

Please do respond to the unhappy customers and apologise on our behalf.

Thanks,

Ross Medley

Just emailed the FF chap and sent right to the Northern climes - and what a fantastic piece of work it is, up there with the legendary In That Number.

I have the complete set (apart from the yellow ribbon one....bah) and we should count ourselves lucky that the club has these dedicated few willing to spend huge amounts of time and money to bring our clubs history to life in such a detailed, and entertaining way.

Seriously, go out, buy it and enjoy it, top stuff and thanks to the hagioloioolioygyugyuig boys ;-)

Picked mine up from Duncan a couple of weeks ago and have since been engrossed.

What surprises me is the number of players that I'e watched over the years but had completely forgotten about.

Nice to see that an anecdote about Bill Stroud that I supplied being included.

You're welcome. :-D I looked for a picture of the Suited and Booted book but that pic came up instead so I went for that instead to illustrate my post! ;-) Is this the last Hagiologist book BTW?

got it for Xmas, who do I sue as it put my back out!!

I thought a player called Harry Lanham played for us, well that's what he used to say lol. Perhaps he only made the reserves. It would have been in the 40-50's

My father, 76 years old, was very happy with the copy I got him for Christmas. He knew lots of the players personally from years ago and has enjoyed reading about his old mates.

Strangely, the fact that I managed to get his copy signed by MLT didn't impress him as much as I hoped, and not nearly as much as the book itself.

Cheers FF. Finding a decent present for him is always a hard task but you helped me do it this year!

I knew Harry Lanham when he was an old man - he was very proud of having played for Saints. You will find him mentioned in the wartime section of the book - he missed out on a football career because of the war.

I believe the Lanham family had some kind of furniture business in Southampton. My barber once showed me their advert in a theatre (?Gaumont) program from the 1930s.

A little heads up for the Authors (I think a few of them are on here?). A relative ordered this book for me from Waterstones (in Ipswich) at the start of December and by Christmas it hadn't arrived - Waterstones were messing my relative about and claimed issues with suppliers etc. which I know is ******** and a crap excuse from them given we know it is in stores in and around Southampton. In the end we ordered it from Amazon I think.

Nick check out page 224 - you will find Harry Lanham there.

Interestingly I had a phone call yesterday from a great nephew of an ex-Saints player from 1896 whose fate after leaving Southampton we were unsure of. It appears he murdered his wife in 1906.

This is a fantastic book, if you haven't decided to go for it yet then I would highly recommend you go for it.

It's clearly not a book to read cover to cover in one go, but I find that I dip into it often, then every time spend longer than expected skipping from player to player.

For me the best thing about the book (apart from the great photos & illustrations) is that although it's brimming with facts, it's written in a warm and entertaining style, sometimes amusing, sometimes opinionated but always respectful of each player's achievements; this is clearly a labour of love by fans for fans.

A massive achievement!

Harry and his sister Rose had an antiques shop in Northam Road, they also had a removal business before that. He was well known on the umpiring circuit and. Ithink umpired in first class cricket. His favourite story was that he was umpiring one of his first matches and got so into the game he turned around to appeal for a decision! whether that was true or not it was an amusing tale.
