John Boy Saint Posted 20 December, 2013 Share Posted 20 December, 2013 With the festive season nearly upon us here's a thought. In 1958 on the 25th December, if I have read it right, Saints played their last ever game on Christmas Day away to Newport County losing 4-2 the return game with County was on the 27th (3-3) In these days of managers complaining about the number of games at Christmas, back then the return match was played most years on Boxing Day. In 1957 25th December we played Aldershot away on the 26th December we played Aldershot at home. With TV money dominating Football if Sky announced that from next season there would be a live game at 11.30 on Christmas morning, what would your immediate thought be? And by some quirk of fate that live game was going to be Saints v Chelsea, novelty value aside, would you go?

On December 25, along the western front, the guns fell silent and men emerged, cautiously at first, from their trenches to meet in no-man’s-land. Some sang Christmas carols, others played football. “It was absolutely astounding,” wrote a British captain, “and if I had seen it on a cinematograph film I should have sworn that it was faked!”
