....in the world of European football. Wonder if it would be a good or bad thing for Saints? (assuming it happens of course)

World players' union Fifpro claims the existing transfer system contravenes law and infringes footballers' rights and it is preparing to challenge the system in the European courts.

Football faces a legal challenge that could result in the end of transfer fees and have as big an impact on the game as the landmark Bosman ruling.

In theory, that would mean a player would be able to tell his club he wanted to leave and hand in his notice. Another club could then pay up the remainder of the player's contract and he would be able to join them without a transfer fee being paid.

I don't understand his reasoning that the current system favours the big clubs. Surely this alternative would still favour the big clubs. I haven't the time or inclination to work out whether one is worse than the other in this respect.

In general though i've got no love for the transfer fee system.

Would place a huge burden of risk on a club operating a top Academy like Saints. Just imagine...Saints invest big bucks in the development of a youngster, but his head could be turned by big wages and off he goes. Having said that, I suspect contract conditions would be tightened...something like "we develop you until you're 18, then you commit to us until you're at least 23"...I think something like that would be OK.

I think the public would vote in favour of anything that restricts top level footballers wages, we're in a democracy so f#ck whitewashing everything with free trade rules.

You've been seeing this week how the movements of the UK government might betray the European Union's core principle of free trade and movement. And not necessarily with positive consequences!

EDIT: And if we did manage to bring in a national wage cap you'd be waving goodbye to half the country's top players.

Not saying I agree as I think the current system 'works' just needs tweaking, the footballing governing body should impose wage caps etc if possible

Im just saying I can see how a lawyer would get hold of it

I'm seeing nothing, I don't pay attention to the news. We've not got the top players anyway and League 1 was just as enjoyable so meh. They can go and swan about in broke ass Spain if they're that bothered
