Julio Cesar: I want Money, Cortese: Up your Kazoo.

Quick tid bit from my friend.......um, lets call him Noel, (yes that will do).......who knows some stuff.

Julio Cesar'sagent has asked for astronomical wages for him to come here, in excess of most of the first team.

We submitted a counter offer.

His agent said that as we are desperate for a goalie, so we should foot the bill. Needs must etc.

We said we would much rather lose the next 5 games. Over to you Júlio César Soares Espíndola.

So it seems that we are at a stalemate. It's not like the deal has to include any..........ahem........add ons for anyone........just the three parties like......uhumm.

I like it that our Chairman takes a hard line in negotiations. Any update i'll let you know.

Do we really need another current South American international with the amount of games and travelling involved amounting to extra unavailability with late returns?

Good point. We need an English goalkeeper. What is Scott Carson up to these days? He was always highly rated. Paul Robinson could do a job for us too.

Not surprising really.

Not that fussed about him if I am honest. Too expensive, and not convinced he actually offers an upgrade on Boruc.

Clearly a money grabber in going to QPR, then prioritising wages over getting off a Championship bench in the run up to a home World Cup.

No thanks, don't want him near the club.

By the time he signs Boruc would only be out a few more games, what's the point?

If we'd have signed Jack Butland in the summer he'd be worth in excess of thirty million now.

Richard Wright? It has taken me a while Turkish but I think I finally understand you. Now I find the things you write funny rather than utterly frustrating.

Any goalkeeper who doesn't offer up 2-3 chances on average to the opposition would be great.

Because he is on the decline and so they loaned him out to a bottom half Championship team.

but as he has a 5 year contract with Villa which goes on for another 2 season he probably doesn't give a toss about that anyway.

Contract probably prices him out of the market as a reserve keeper for any respectable club.

As is true for most international keepers.

This is a point that seems to be lost on certain posters that have suddenly started frothing at the mouth with incredulity that we do not have 2 international class goalkeepers.

I'm a goalkeeper! Not as young or as glam as Hope, I'm afraid...

Back to César; if he has been injured according to stevegrant we're obviously not going for him just to cover for those next 5 games, surely? I'm sure we'll pay decently (although maybe not QPR/'arry levels) but it seems the current team ethos relies on motivated players, and he certainly doesn't seem that.

If we were looking to bring him in as an emergency loan due to the injuries I'd have been happy to see him come here but no real point in signing him permanently considering his wages and being of a similar age to Boruc. He also wasn't all that great last season and Green was preferred to him at times towards the end of the season.

As far as I'm concerned Boruc is good for another year or two as first choice but appreciate we need better back-up. Despite our apparent need for a world class second choice keeper, realistically the sort of player we could get would be more in the Boaz Myhill or Mark Bunn mould. I.e. someone with lower league experience but respectable stand-ins for the odd game. The sort of player you'd be looking at would probably be in the 24-30 age bracket and regularly playing in the Championship/League 1. Someone like Wayne Hennessey might not be too disastrous. Still fairly young for a keeper but has had injury problems in the last couple of years and was reasonably highly rated at one stage.

You play? I had no idea, you should tell us about it sometime.

If the choice is Cesar or no keeper then I'd obviously take him, but I don't think he's the right man for us. Wages aside, he's not better than Boruc and he wouldn't sit quietly on the bench during a World Cup year. Could be disruptive - but I suppose we wouldn't sign him if we didn't trust he'd fit in.

I don't think we'd sign him to just be a benchwarmer. I don't see how he would agree to that or how we could even justify it from a wages perspective (unless we're paying such a small percentage of what he earns at QPR). I'm not overly enthusiastic about genuine competition at the goalkeeper spot - I can't think of a situation in football where it works out. The uncertainty from goalkeepers doesn't really promote better form - it brings on nervousness and apprehension which can be seen in how they play. I prefer having a clear number 1 and a competent (if not as good) backup. I think we should go for an older experienced keeper who doesn't mind being a backup due to age but is a safe pair of hands in the Premier League - but they are pretty rare I know.

Exactly, you're right. And he's not gonna be one of those types!

What makes it harder is that those ideal, reliable backups often slide down the ranks at their current club - and either way these changes happen over summer. I think Jääskeläinen will be the Schwarzer/Friedel-esque figure in a couple of years - doesn't solve our problem now but I'd love to have him if West Ham get relegated.

Not for me. Just don't see the point being bent over a barrel for a player we'd only need for a couple of games. I'm with Adrians - give Gazza a try til Jan and find out if he's up to it. If he's not we can make a well-reasoned purchase in our own time before the start of next season. As has been pointed out not many top goalies transfer mid-way through a season. We're not really in that desperate a position - we are not fighting for our lives and Boruc will be back soon.

The thing is we need at least a decent reserve keeper so we might as well get one now when we need him most. Most top end Championship keepers would do well enough so we just have to stick a pin in the table and bingo go and buy their keeper. Whatever we get from that approach can't be worse than Gazza and probably a damn sight cheaper, nigh on 3 million for him was just a criminal waste.
