robdevil7 Posted 17 December, 2013 Posted 17 December, 2013 So, I've been thinking about it for a bit, and I have come to the conclusion that he simply doesn't have great technique. Of course he's terrific at set pieces and passing, but his actual ability with the ball isn't exceptional, or even what we may make it out to be. This is why I think he struggles often in matches. It's often hard for him to dominate matches because of this. Am I the only one who thinks this?

You, sir need to stop thinking about anything if this depressingly pathetic tripe is all that your brain can come up with.

It's often hard for him to dominate matches because of this. Am I the only one who thinks this? I think he's fantastic. The team feels much calmer/in control when he's playing (although he's had a quiet recent couple of games), and I think that's down to his composure, technique and vision. Given how young he is, they are pretty amazing qualities to be showing already. With success rate of recent youth players coming into the squad, compared to the purchased players with time needed to adjust, this youth first policy is going to be mighty successful for the Saints. Compare to AVB at Spurs. We'll unlikely be in a position where we need to embed a whole new team of expensive stars from scratch.
Dig Dig Posted 17 December, 2013 Posted 17 December, 2013 His technical ability isn't a problem at all but as with most 18 year olds, he is struggling at times with the physical aspect of the game. Been a little unlucky in that he is the one hauled off when we've had to change our attacking set up. Quality player IMO but needs to identify his position and role over the next couple of seasons.

I'm not sure I'd call it thinking - it's a very weird statement about one of the better all round players in the side regarding technique! Sure he'll get better with games and experience which is why he's so highly rated - I'm not sure who you have been watching? I've rarely seen him look out of place let alone 'struggle' since he became part of the regular squad! Curious 'first' post!
Window Cleaner Posted 17 December, 2013 Posted 17 December, 2013 JWP is at his best on the right of the attacking 3 midfielders, of late he's been drafted in to replace Morgan and he isn't anywhere near as comfortable in that role as we saw last Saturday, in fact it needed Steve Davis to be constantly dropping back to help him out. Once we get back to our usual formation he'll no doubt look better although I can't see him deplacing SD for the starters place at ARM in the near future.
shurlock Posted 17 December, 2013 Posted 17 December, 2013 (edited) Fantastic delivery and very intelligent in terms of being able to pick up and execute MP's vision, though the fact that he doesn't have the defensive qualities of a Morgan or Wanayama or the creativity or attacking instinct of a Lallana or even a Davis means that he is expendable when we have to change tack. In a similar vein, it is slightly frustrating that he outsources attacking responsibilities to the fullback which is far less feasible away from home. Like Dig Dig says, he needs to define his position and role -at the very least, would like him to attempt more crosses from open play which isnt a huge ask. Edited 17 December, 2013 by shurlock

More meaningless stats from the FM generation His cross or deep delivery at Stoke stood out because of how rare he threatens from open play.
Saint Charlie Posted 17 December, 2013 Posted 17 December, 2013 More meaningless stats from the FM generation His cross or deep delivery at Stoke stood out because of how rare he threatens from open play. He isn't a huge threat from open play, but his crossing is very good. The "outsourcing" of attacking responsibilities is something that is obviously worked on and requested by the coaching staff. Our full backs on both sides play very, very high - and I think Clyne and JWP together have worked really well when both starting.

Solid Saint Posted 17 December, 2013 Posted 17 December, 2013 More meaningless stats from the FM generation His cross or deep delivery at Stoke stood out because of how rare he threatens from open play. Yup, meaningless....... "Over the course of the 2013/14 Premier League season so far, Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse (12.08), Christian Eriksen (10.72) of Tottenham, Manchester City’s Jesús Navas (10.70) and Morgan Amalfitano (10.19) of West Bromwich Albion currently lead the league in terms of crosses attempted per 90 minutes among players that have attempted 35 crosses or more"

Away from home, less so as our fullbacks can't afford to play as high.

For all the open play crosses he's deemed to have had, am somewhat surprised he hasn't got more assists...
KelvinsRightGlove Posted 17 December, 2013 Posted 17 December, 2013 More meaningless stats from the FM generation His cross or deep delivery at Stoke stood out because of how rare he threatens from open play. Lol, people that deny stats are hilarious. Yes, they don't tell the whole story. But, you can still glean a lot from them. And, managers, coaches and chairman do indeed put a lot of stock in them when analysing their own players and potential transfer targets. It's not an "FM Generation" (LMAO) thing, it's simply improved coverage and technology being able to track these things better.

It's not an "FM Generation" (LMAO) thing, it's simply improved coverage and technology being able to track these things better. I dont deny them -and indeed have to use them in my day job. Though that's also made me aware that there is a lot of spurious precision in the world. Garbage in, garbage out and all that. Often, there's no better sense check than watching games and eyeballing things for yourself - looking at each and every cross and disentangling those that lead to assists or genuine chances from a whole load of things that might count as crosses. Happy for you to point to examples of JWP's delivery (Stoke apart) where he has come even close to replicating his deadball delivery.
eharty9 Posted 17 December, 2013 Posted 17 December, 2013 Oh my god seriously mate do us a favour!!! It's like some people on this forum get bored by Tuesday and feel they have to pick at somebody!!! JWP is top class and has a superb technique, probably one of the better in our side
mitch01 Posted 17 December, 2013 Posted 17 December, 2013 He has absolutely fantastic technique. His delivery from free-kicks and corners are going to earn us a lot of goals in the coming years.
Solid Saint Posted 17 December, 2013 Posted 17 December, 2013 Is this the existential mongboard debate about shots leading to goals and wins but with an even more slippery metric? Nope, its the proof that people are talking out of their arse post. Enjoy.

robdevil7 Posted 17 December, 2013 Author Posted 17 December, 2013 I'm glad to see my thread has been met with such fervour and kindness. I'm honestly not attempting to be contentious; it's just an opinion I think has some validity. I'm not saying he's a bad player - because he's not - but his ability with the ball at his feet is a little questionable of quality. But if it's any consolation I do think he's going to become a great player - I never doubted that.

His game is all about having the ball at his feet. For him to be good at what he does, he needs to be good with the ball at his feet.
richardc Posted 17 December, 2013 Posted 17 December, 2013 Out of interest does anyone know his preferred position because for England he plays as a holding midfield player but for saints he plays out wide in the diamond. Dont think he quite has the strength at the moment for the holding midfield role It would be good to chip in with a few goals in his wide role
