View From The Top Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 Stokies today seemed to think we'd made an approach for him in Jan'. Can't see it myself but it would be a fantastic signing.
shurlock Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 Would be a cracking signing - seems like an all round decent character.

Batman Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 that would be something. Would be a long term keeper quite like fraser forster also
View From The Top Posted 16 December, 2013 Author Posted 16 December, 2013 Do you have a source/link for this? I work in Stoke, for my sins.
View From The Top Posted 16 December, 2013 Author Posted 16 December, 2013 What does your lad think? "Better than what we've got".
Saint Without a Halo Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 Are we short of strikers then?
DuncanRG Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 He's top quality. Thing is, half of what's made Boruc such a success is the confidence and unity he brings to the back line, and it's hard to tell who could replicate that before they arrive. Begovic is better than Boruc technically but might not have that character about him. Perhaps the Stoke fans can give us their two cents?

I expect the most we could expect from Stoke fans would be two fingers. Kinda the same we are giving everyone who wants to buy Luke Shaw/SRL/MP etc etc
BlakeySFC Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 Would be an awesome signing, can't see it happening though unfortunately.
DuncanRG Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 I expect the most we could expect from Stoke fans would be two fingers. Kinda the same we are giving everyone who wants to buy Luke Shaw/SRL/MP etc etc Sounds about right actually
Huffton Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 that would be something. Would be a long term keeper quite like fraser forster also when was the last time a 1st choice, top flight keeper in england moved in january?
Whitey Grandad Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 At least it would stop him scoring against us.
Hockey_saint Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 To be fair, he wouldn't be the first goalkeeper to score against us before we signed him....and we know how good the other one was.
benjii Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 Do you have a source/link for this? His oppo.
View From The Top Posted 16 December, 2013 Author Posted 16 December, 2013 His oppo. Very good. I actually wish it was from someone I knew instead of Stokie tittletattle.
The Kraken Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 In the summer there were figures of £15M+ being bandied around for him. Would we shell that out? He's "only" 26 which isn't much in keeper's terms. Very good keeper; not sure I see it though.

Corky knows some Stoke coaching staff so he's sniffing about.
SaintSteve Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 Why on earth would we want to sign Begovic.. Boruc is a world class keeper so what we need is a young keeper who can learn from him..
syd_barrett_saint Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 Why on earth would we want to sign Begovic.. Boruc is a world class keeper so what we need is a young keeper who can learn from him.. Because Begovic is arguably as good and is a much longer-term option.
Lighthouse Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 Why on earth would we want to sign Begovic.. Boruc is a world class keeper so what we need is a young keeper who can learn from him.. We have, Gazzaniga. However he isn't ready for Premier League football yet so we need someone else.
SaintSteve Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 We have, Gazzaniga. However he isn't ready for Premier League football yet so we need someone else. Begovic will not go to any club to sit on the bench; probably cost about 15Million..
hypochondriac Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 when was the last time a 1st choice, top flight keeper in england moved in january? This bloke speaks sense.
CanadaSaint Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 Why on earth would we want to sign Begovic.. Boruc is a world class keeper so what we need is a young keeper who can learn from him.. Possibly because Pochettino is a lot more p*ssed-off about the Stoke and Arsenal goals than he let on at the time.
Badger Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 I thought £8m - £10m was the figure bandied about in the summer. £15m seems too much to me , but if we are prepared to spend £12m on Wanyama , and similar on Osvaldo, we probably would also be willing to shell it out on a GK who could be with us for years to come.

S-Clarke Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 Blimey, didn't realise he was only 26. Thought he was much older. Wouldn't say no, would futureproof that position for a good few years. Good keeper.
benjii Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 Baruc has been good but it's not great that he has no serious competition and he's no spring chicken. Goalie, centre back and attacking mid/ wing are the three areas I would like us to strengthen (less so the latter if we have any faith in Gaston).
Huffton Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 This bloke speaks sense. Actually I was asking batman the same question he asked me in the other thread where I suggested we should try ro get Begovic
Badger Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 Although we may be interested this is unlikely to happen, as even if we make a bid, the player may hold out for a stronger prospect of Champions League football. Still a little more realistic than the Casillas rumour last week though.
ThreeSixty Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 World class. Would be 15-20m and worth every penny.
Badger Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 Interestingly though, one of their forums have a discussion about Stoke signing Forster from Celtic as a replacement for Begovic based on a wild rumour type article.
Lighthouse Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 Begovic will not go to any club to sit on the bench; probably cost about 15Million.. I don't see any reason he would go back to the bench when Boruc is fit. Let them fight it out for the #1 spot. Davis can retire, Gazza can go on loan to some Championship club.
Trader Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 Begovic will not go to any club to sit on the bench; probably cost about 15Million.. If we sign Begovic, Boruc will be the one sitting on the bench. And rightly so.
Saint Jude Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 surely it'll only be players warming benches that will want to move in January to try and get into National sides for the WC... maybe we could tempt Joe Hart?

pap Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 Why would he retire when he has 2 years of a professional contract at a Premier League club left? Horse head under duvet.
stevegrant Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 Whichever keeper we sign to eventually succeed Boruc will be comfortable with the ball at his feet and being able to distribute the ball accurately over 40-50 yards. For me, his distribution is Boruc's main weakness - as far as goalkeepers go, it's not the worst attribute to have as your weakest suit, but it becomes more important when you play in a team that plays the way we do. I've no idea whether Begovic's distribution is any good, largely the only evidence of him passing is of the 80-yard variety in that Stoke team. Worth noting that Pompey don't have a sell-on clause on any future sale...
Lighthouse Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 Why would he retire when he has 2 years of a professional contract at a Premier League club left? To become a coach.
Matthew Le God Posted 16 December, 2013 Posted 16 December, 2013 (edited) To become a coach. And lose a huge amount of money for himself and his family. There is a good chance his current wage will be higher now than it will ever be for the rest of his life. Might as well wait until his playing contract ends in 2016 and then move into coaching if he wants. Plus Saints already have a goalkeeper coach that Pochettino likes working with. bpsaint Posted 17 December, 2013 Posted 17 December, 2013 Begovic would be a cracking signing, don't know why he'd want to leave Stoke for us though, it's not a big as step as it would be if one of the usual top 6 were after him.

Uncle Nic will sell him the glorious golden vision and fantastic future of this wonderful football club as it competes with the cream of Europe. Also we'll pay him a sh !tload of money.
whelk Posted 17 December, 2013 Posted 17 December, 2013 We are discussing this why? Man City linked and rumoured to let hart go the other way. Doesn't seem short of suitors so why does anyone think he is coming our way. Don't such threads normally start with a link?
max_saints Posted 17 December, 2013 Posted 17 December, 2013 if he really is available, man city would swoop in for him. then we could swoop in for one of hart or pantilimon
Sour Mash Posted 17 December, 2013 Posted 17 December, 2013 Can't see it happening at all.Plus he always seems keen enough to give a bit back to the 'You Skate *******' shouts he always gets.
John Boy Saint Posted 17 December, 2013 Posted 17 December, 2013 Begovic would be a cracking signing, don't know why he'd want to leave Stoke for us though, it's not a big as step as it would be if one of the usual top 6 were after him. He might want to live besides the sea again, just maybe the quality of fish to fiddle with in the glistening canals of Stoke aren't a patch on those found in the Solent!!
