Good question Bewildered, but in honesty, if he got £7m that would have been a good price. But.....who was the replacement and how far would £7m go?

Personally, I am happy (especially as it isn't my money) to not cash in on those who have given excellent service to the club. I think it important that clubs recognise those that have given a lot and try and use them as much as possible, rather than farm them out when they get towards the end of their career.

"Cortese was negotiating a £7m move for Rickie Lambert to West Ham days before his exit but that looks to have stalled.

England striker Lambert wants to stay at Saints and has two-and-a-half years left on his contract."

Lamberts body language in a few games before this seem to indictate he knew about the transfer and I suspect he wasn't over the moon with it.

So we have Cortese orchestrating transfer moves and therefore influencing team selection and K Liebherr saying nobody is going in January. I'm trusting that she has her Dad's genes.

Think he'll score tomorrow.

Something was definitely up with Lambert the last few weeks. Maybe it was him not wanting to leave and Cortese forcing it through that was the cause (if reports that he wants to stay and the deal is now stalling are true).

But nonetheless useful for penalties.

He might have overtaken MLT's record by then.

Or he'll do a Ted Bates, and be a player, manager, director and president. Then we can commission someone to do a truly awful statue of him.

Return to Hounslow West please.

No I haven't got change of a £50.

Hmmm, what was that about Katrina appointing a top PR firm....

I want the ones who hammered the people saying this is a distinct possibility less than two weeks ago commenting on this, as it was in the gutter press they said it was rubbish (a negative thread or percieved one is always dismissed as lazy journalism or absolute lies yet ones seen as postive are superb pices of work and outstanding insight) but now its in the broadsheets its seen as authentic.

£7 mil is a hell of a lot of money to turn down for him, so I can see why NC may have been pushing him out the door.

Indeed but depends what happens to the £7m

This. Also good thing to point to when trying to convince players to join the club in the first place

Why was Cortese trying to sell a popular player like Rickie days before he walked out on the club? Wonder who would have been taking the flak for that if it had gone through in time.

Possibly, from a BUSINESS point of view, a £7M offer NOW, for a 31 year old, would have been too good an opportunity to pass up.

(Not tha I would have wanted RL to leave.

As in The Godfather .... " tell Michael it was just business "

Spoke to someome yesterday who knows him, so this is from the horses mouth pretty much.

Rickie doesn't want to leave as he and his family are settled and he has a good deal at Saints, however the clubs had pretty much agreed a fee. WHU have offered him a 3 year deal on double the money he's on now. He's leaving it as late as possible to before deciding to see what happens here.

so in fact we do have plans to sell a player then....surely that can't be right.

I'm assuming when Huffton said "had agreed a fee" that this was prior to the departure of Cortese and KL's statement.

these rumours wont go away. In that Lambert wants to go and for £70k+ a week

would you blame him, going for the money?

No. He's a legend already, and owes us nothing. For whatever reason, by his own high standards. things haven't been going as well for him in the last couple of months. However, it looks increasingly likely that West Ham will be going down to the Championship and I think he will stay. Many on here think he's finished all of a sudden but I disagree. On soccer sarturday, Merson claimed he would love to go there. MLT asked why, but got cut off, although he kept quite quiet throughout whilst the others were discussing us

You'd have to assume that wouldn't you and that any deal is now off, ie having no plans so Rickie has nothing to decide on at all for the immediate future. Otherwise it would be in total contradiction of the statement from the owner on Friday.

Not really.

The statement reads:

“My belief has not changed from a week ago. No player that I don’t want to leave will leave this club.”

Perhaps she -or at least Les- wants RL to leave.

If he goes to West Ham then he won't be going to Brazil. Carroll is always going to be ahead of him.

I don't think he's going to Brazil at this moment anyway, far too many strikers are way in front of him just now.

I'd say that Lallana is the only Saints player in contention for England at this time and he neeeds not to have too many more games like yesterday either.

No that's Mauricio's statement, the owner's statement says we have no plans to sell any players in the transfer window.

The owners statement is incorrectly worded at best because it just doesn't reflect what Mauricio's say at all.

True -though her statement is ultimately read to mean that she wont do anything MP doesn't want. Indeed, she says that explicitly elsewhere in the statement. To that extent, I see her statement being superseded by MP's more conditional one.

maybe it is lambert who really wants out

but Hufton says he doesn't, in fact the whole thing is contradictory. From what Hufton says we had plans to sell him and that it's he who doesn't want to go but that he might consider it if we insist because it's good money anyway. Looking at the various statements you'd have to assume that Mauricio doesn't want him here (if he's eventually sold that is) Then again perhaps Mauricio wants signings and there's no money to do that unless we sell RL.

Perhaps we have another Dejan quality player lined up. 7milfor Rickie IF we had to sell before we could buy would be the easiest deal for the club to take.

Where that then puts our striking options - means Osvaldo & JRod sharing them with Gallagher getting more game time - not ideal but makes some sense.

Anyway perhaps WBA may come to the party - sold Long and being told their sponsor will pull out IF they play Anelka against Everton Monday...

Bidding War time get the price up to 10 and say thanks SRL.

(I want him to stay btw)

As you say certain scenarios are possible but at the end of the day (if any of this is vaguely correct) you have to admit one of two things. Either we did have plans to sell a player or if you consider Mauricio's statement to be the most binding then he doesn't want to retain Lambert.

The other consideration would be does the WHU offer contain a relegation clause? I fail to see how they could pay him 80k a week in the championship.

Same as they did last time by bouncing straight back up I'd suppose. When do they get the Olympic Stadium ?

Lambert to WHU and Demba Ba in on loan with Chelsea subsidising his wages.

Wow we must really have sinned against the Footballing Gods................ Relatives are Chelsea ST holders and despite their sometimes arrogant Special One'esk attitude not even they would wish that on us!!

Doubt it, Sure WHU would prefer to just sign Demba Ba on loan....he won't leave though IMO unless Chelsea buy a top striker.
