david in sweden Posted 15 December, 2013 Share Posted 15 December, 2013 ....this is not a " who is the best " thread, but am I alone in being impressed by Calum Chambers' performances so far? I still rate Clyne as the best starter, but do not sense that inner " groan " when I see that the first-choice player isn't available....he seems more than capable. He was thrown in at the deep end at the start of the season, and for someone who didn't have Clyne's 100+ apps. behind him does well IMHO. Back in again after two month's absence, he looks as though he's never been away. Not afraid to tackle.... and thank goodness for that goal-line clearance yesterday. He looks very good going forward, and I'm just waiting for his first successful attempt at a " Ivan Golac-style " goal. He could be another good prospect for England honours .....in two or three years time. Older fans will know the one I mean (and it's still on You Tube somewhere). Pugwash Posted 15 December, 2013 Share Posted 15 December, 2013 You're certainly not alone. The lad has the full repertoire and is mature beyond his years. Real competition for Clyne. Not had a U-21 call up yet I don't think, but it's got to be soon.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 15 December, 2013 Share Posted 15 December, 2013 Agreed...we are very lucky to have two of the best English right backs in the country playing for us. It will be harsh on Calum if he loses his place to a returning Clyne IMO.

sammysaint Posted 15 December, 2013 Share Posted 15 December, 2013 This is what we need at LB as well good squad depth RB CM and CF are the strongest positions we have with quality and depth, we need to add a LB and LW or RW to help us finish top 8 this season. Clyne and Chambers are both going to be premier league stars, lets hope we can keep them for a long time.
Saint Charlie Posted 15 December, 2013 Share Posted 15 December, 2013 Excellent player who deserves to be a first choice. Then again, so does Clyne. Actually think eventually CC will be better than Clyne.
WealdSaint Posted 15 December, 2013 Share Posted 15 December, 2013 As several people have said our squad lacks a pacey winger............it would not be impossible to play them both as I think Clyne would be great being allowed to go forward with no defensive duties

Red Alert Posted 15 December, 2013 Share Posted 15 December, 2013 Not that this is something we do too often but I think he could do with a spell out on loan in the Championship getting that experience up. He is undoubtedly already a capable back up to Clyne.

Badger Posted 15 December, 2013 Share Posted 15 December, 2013 Why would a loan to the Championship help him? He's already shown that he is prem class. Regular first team matches. Agree with David in Sweden et al, about CC. The other option he helps give us is Clyne switching to lb as cover for Shaw if needed, without weakening our right hand side (as it would if relying on a Butterfield or Richardson at this level). So we loan him out for him to get matches and then he isn't here and available when we need him, making our sauad weaker in the process? Doesn't make sense to me. He's only 18, playing prem matches and training with a prem squad every day. Not sure what use a loan would be, he's got ready for our first team without the need for a loan already. VectisSaint Posted 15 December, 2013 Share Posted 15 December, 2013 As several people have said our squad lacks a pacey winger............it would not be impossible to play them both as I think Clyne would be great being allowed to go forward with no defensive duties Chambers was originally a midfielder (winger), and maybe he will eventually return to that sort of position. He is getting to be as good as Clyne. At the start of the season he lacked confidence going forward, was very good defensively. The difference now is that since he has come back in he has looked confident going forward as well, and so his game has become more complete. I am perfectly happy with Chambers standing in for Clyne, one of the positions where we do really have good competition now. If only we could say the same with LB, although I would be happy to see Clyne at LB and Chambers at RB should the need arise.
Roger Posted 15 December, 2013 Share Posted 15 December, 2013 I'm thrilled with chambers but saying he's as good as Clyne is silly I think. Clyne is a fab player and offers such a pacy threat down the wing.

Wiggles31 Posted 15 December, 2013 Share Posted 15 December, 2013 Like how he bombs forward. Real prospect but Clyne is our first choice. Definitely looks like he will be as good as Shaw as a young full back.
Monk Posted 15 December, 2013 Share Posted 15 December, 2013 He's getting better. Still a bit naive when reacting from a defensive position, especially an over load. Just needs to 'recover' before he challenges for the ball. Really pleased for him. Very humble too.
angelman Posted 15 December, 2013 Share Posted 15 December, 2013 This is what we need at LB as well good squad depth To a certain extent we do. Clyne can be LB cover, with Chambers slotting into RB. That is if none of those two are injured as well as Shaw. I can't see Fox playing again in the league.
max_saints Posted 15 December, 2013 Share Posted 15 December, 2013 like shaw was thrown in at the deep end last season when fox was injured, same has happened with chambers and I can only see him getting better next season just like shaw. this is truly a dream scenario isn't it, having at least one young player promoted to the first team every season and proving to be more than capable to hold down a starting spot. who's next! Sam Gallagher? Harrison reed?
krissyboy31 Posted 15 December, 2013 Share Posted 15 December, 2013 Really like Chambers but has a bit to go to be the equal of Clyne but then he is four years younger. If they both reach their potential and we can keep them, then we'll have a hell of an option at right back and may see Clyne play ahead of him at RMF. Avenue Saint Posted 16 December, 2013 Share Posted 16 December, 2013 Now that he gets forward, really is potentially a diamond of a fullback to have. Strong, pacey, good positioning... Right back is ticked off with Clyne and Chambers now!
Giordano Posted 16 December, 2013 Share Posted 16 December, 2013 Chambers is the new Luke Shaw but bigger. He has got attacking DNA just like Clyne but both can defend and know how to do it properly rather than needing to be taught - which is often the problem when you ask an attacking player to have a defensive responsibility. It would not be a surprise for me to see CC playing at same time as Clyne on same flank. He's a very fit lad - i expect him to improve over the course of this season as knocks and suspensions ensure he gets his chances....like a poster above i await his Ivan golac moment - but i reckon he has got more than a little of the Gareth Bale about him. One " super- goal" could be the trigger for him to start rampaging down the right a bit more....terrorising the other EPL left backs who are mostly indifferent against his kind of pace and power imo... Tony F Posted 16 December, 2013 Share Posted 16 December, 2013 Who cleared off our goal line at Newcastle when Gazza was caught in no mans land? Yup - Calum Chambers - great instinct. Had we gone two down.........curtains I reckon.
Charlie Wayman Posted 16 December, 2013 Share Posted 16 December, 2013 What we don't want to do now is lose one of these two kids because they can't get a start when fit. Chambers is a big lad so why not convert him to a right side mid fielded to take over from the old warhorses Jos and Jose? Then we can play both and no problem even more academy boys ion the perm. jasonb Posted 16 December, 2013 Share Posted 16 December, 2013 I just posted in the JRod thread that I hope he (JRod) is bending Rickie's ear constantly re how to improve his own game. Same goes for Chambers - I hope he is taking as much as he can from Clyne who is at least 2 years more advanced especially going forward. On the opposite flank I was surprised to hear Shaw saying how much Fox has helped him and how he rates him as one of his closest and trusted advisers at the club!! Can't remember where I heard that but Shaw defo said it. For all Foxy's deficiencies I guess if Shaw is making comments like that then Fox must be a good lad and an important squad member so fair play to the lad.
