Gazza might as well be 2nd choice, no real difference between him and Davis.

Fact is we have no backup to Boruc that is anywhere near PL standard.

Possibly only Palace have a weaker no2 keeper in the whole league.

talk about an ungrateful set of supporters. Davis was superb and loyal to the club. He has been given a handful of PL games, playing behind a disorganised defence who were finding their way. When he came on as a sub against Chelsea (?) last season he made a match winning contribution. Yes he is getting on a bit and lost confidence behind a shaky defence, but he deserves better than being compared to a 3rd choice rookie. Shameful

Neither are up to PL level.

You will find the majority will agree with me.

Yep we had the Smith was better than Niemi, Blayney was better than. Niemi, etc etc ,we then had the series of keepers who were the next best thing instead of Kelvin, funny that they all have faded into the distant past. Thankfully the managers were bright enough to realise the error of those thoughts. Hand on heart do you think we would be where we are now with out Kelvin and Rickie. One saved us points at one end the other scored the goals to get us where we are . There were loads getting excited and wanting us to pay 6m for Butland, this is the lad who is shipping in goals for Barnsley. I have watched Gazza yesterday on the tv and accept that the bad error was just one of those things, he was sent a pass that was pretty paced and bounced on him, he mis kicked and was something a keeper may do at times. Show me a keeper that never makes a mistake, you will look forever as there has never been such a keeper.

OldNick you are missing the point.

I know full well what KD has done for us and not disrespecting that.

But he isnt good enough for us now. Neither is Gazza.

Gazza made an error leading to Chambers clearance off the line and another with a backpass that wasn't as horrendous as everyone is making out.

He fumbled a routine ball out for a corner and has an absolutely awful saves to shots ratio.

Yes he is what we have, but its not being over the top or disrespectful to repeat what I initially said:

Gazzaniga nor Davis are good enough Premier League goalkeepers (now, at this point in both their careers).

We should have a second keeper better than both of these, as 90%of PL teams do and every team that wants to finish in the top half.

Confusing post.

Saying that Davis and Gazza aren't good enough -fair enough- doesn't rule out the fact Davis might be better than Gazza and be the lesser of two evils.

Its not confusing. Neither is good enough. Davis might be better than Gazza but over his career he hasn't done well at this level.

So right here, right now, you'd prefer Davis over Gazza in goal?

Think that's what most people are saying while acknowledging Davis isn't prem level quality.

Indeed he was but that doesn't make him a PL goalkeeper.

He has been given a handful of PL games, playing behind a disorganised defence who were finding their way.

33 games in the 2005/06 season with Sunderland in the PL and 8 games for us in the PL is more than a "handful of games"

When he came on as a sub against Chelsea (?) last season he made a match winning contribution.

Fair play to him for that

Yes he is getting on a bit and lost confidence behind a shaky defence,

He's 37 years old and was widely considered to not be good enough for the PL by Sunderland fans when he was in his twenties

but he deserves better than being compared to a 3rd choice rookie. Shameful

He's had 2 spells in the PL as first choice goalkeeper. The first time he got dropped for an 18 year old rookie and the 2nd time he got dropped for a 20 year old rookie, and you don't like him being compared to rookies?

KD has been a fantastic servant for us in the lower leagues and I still think he could do a solid job in League 1 or possibly Championship level, but his key weaknesses mean he can't cut it in the PL and at 37 he never will. It's time to face that fact. The reason he's being compared to a "3rd choice rookie" is because he can't offer anymore than Gazzaniga as a back-up keeper in the PL, and due to their respective ages only one of them has any chance of improving and it isn't KD.

We need to sign a solid jobber as number 2 to Boruc in January, and I'd be all for KD getting a coaching role here and going out on loan to the lower leagues while he can still play. I fear KD's status will only get further tarnished if we let sentimentality allow him to play in the PL again.

Only saw it once on MoTD but the tackle for which MS got booked looked like a good hard challenge, the kind that used to be applauded. Was it a foul? Was it a yellow?

Looked a perfectly good challenge - the OS gallery (image 74) is inconclusive but suggests he got to the ball well before taking the man.

This pretty much sums it up. One injured goalkeeper that is class most of the time. One injured goalkeeper who isn't good enough. Leaves us with a fit 21 year old that in other circumstances wouldn't even be in the match day squad.

I will say that at the time he played last season Davis was left out, Boruc wasn't fit and the two games he did play before being dropped were poor. Gazzaniga, thrown in at the deep end played in some decent results which at the time was an improvement and in the end gave us the points to stay in the league. When Boruc came back it took him a few games to lose his nervousness and show what good keeper he is.

As far as I am concerned Gazzaniga needs to play games, just training and watching games from the stand isn't helping him especially now unexpectedly being thrown in. He needs to get out on loan to a decent team below the Premier.

We need another top class keeper to compete with Boruc and Davis as back up. Until then Gazzaniga needs all the help he can get.

A good point, but really need to turn all this possession into wins.

Suggests we are lacking in the last third of the field.

Osvaldo plays when he feels like it, Rickie is finding consistency difficult, we seem totally dependent on J-Rod.

This is your worst post ever!!!

It makes sense.

Haway then, for those who travelled up here, did you enjoy it ?

Excellent as always. Did our usual Friday and Saturday night stay, which we have also done for Sunderland/Boro games as well for the past 20 years.

Town Wall for pre and post match supping. Too many other places visited to recall.

Back in January, when I hope I wont be stood next to people wearing "bad-taste" xmas sweaters.

Interesting chat with some Toon supporters in pub after game. They thought Lambert was tremendous. Holds ball up brilliantly, almost impossible to dispossess and able to move behind front runners or take on the striker's role. But what do Toon fans know about football compared with Saints' cognoscenti?
