QPR plan new 40,000 seater stadium

Similar things would have been said with us moving from the Dell to St Mary's yet we did that on the back of several years of full houses. They are obviously doing this looking to the future in the hope they can grow their fan-base but the quote that came out of Fernandes mouth along the lines of 'We are building homes as part of the complex and hope that some of those will become hoops' shows a little naivety, those who are inclined to buy season tickets and attend are usually hard-wired to the teams they follow.

It will take a long, long time for them to grow to a 40,000 every week fan-base unless the ticket prices are extremely low.... especially when you consider that they struggled to break 14,000 at each home game until they mounted a promotion push.

I think for QPR a 28,000 to 30,000 seater stadium that allows for future expansion if needed would be more realistic. Jumping straight from 18k to 40k is a huge leap.

Cardiff City are also expanding, phase 1 is already under way which will make their stadium bigger than St Mary's...

Phases 2 and 3 will take it to this and 39,000...

So when people were saying all these people from Dartford to Truro were going to come to the newly expanded 45,000 St Marys with the promise of premier league football and even people in Portsmouth not attached to a club will become Saints fans. When thousands upon thousands of new fans would flood though the gates of St Marys because they could guarenteed to get a ticket at the new flexible pricing/german model/easy jet model this was definitely going to happen. Yet QPR want to build a bigger stadium and tap into their local support and it's naive and deluded. Gottcha.

why? when were in the champinship you were claiming we'd go from 25,000 to 45,000. Not that different is it.

Having been someone who never went along with that concept... sure, why not. Personally I've always felt that St Mary's is just right for us, it can be made more attractive/appealling without the need for expansion.

Lol I didnt see the edit, its scary that he is essentially in control of my club in one of my favourite games, thankfully there is an edit option.

I personally dont see why QPR shouldnt be prospecting for the future, its cheaper to make the changes now rather than later. TF is an idiot with his cash aswell and wont stop IMO until he is bankrupt or QPR are firmly in Europe.

Their are only a finite number of spaces that clubs are aiming for, we can't all make it.

Lots of clubs are now moving along with ambitious infrastructure plans. West Ham new stadium, QPR new stadium, Cardiff stadium expansion, Swansea stadium expansion, Chelsea/Spurs/Liverpool/Everton all looking to improve or relocate etc etc.

Lets hope these plans see the light of day to allow Saints to increase revenue streams and compete. Its not just about extra seats, it is everything else in the development as well...

The council is currently seriously looking at regeneration around the area and I believe that a joint venture around St Marys is potentially part of those plans.

Sssshhh, don't let Turkish hear you say that! But then he still hasn't realised I have had him on ignore and haven't responded to him in over 6 months.

I listened to this article on the radio and wondered whether the Club would get involved..... essentially the land won't cost anything, it will be down to how much investment will be thrown at the development and the cost of reclaiming some land will be high.

Thinking back to Cortese interview in the summer, where he wants to grow revenues by 80% (which simply couldn't be done by football revenues alone) I was wondering if the Club could be involved in this?

I am afraid I don't believe that we are stilling being funded by the family, but if we were.....................

Just love how they ignored the bizarre posts and just discussed the bare point. The disciples of the Jonas brothers could teach a few on here a thing or two. :adore:

I'm surprised there was no one calling "Dell Size Mentality" a troll, that he was ruining the forum and claiming he was the reason the good posters dont bother any more and you can see why.

Not sure how spending millions and millions on expanding a stadium we currently cannot sell out for all but the obvious games (despite having the best season we've had for thirty odd years) is going to "increase revenue streams" or help us "compete", especially as we will go from an apparent debt free club to one with significant non-team related debts commitments.

And, as far as I can see, we are "competing".

Have you not noticed those pictures show alot more than merely adding seats to St Mary's?

Silly me I know but this thread was meant to be about the wisdow, or not, of QPR planning a move to a new 40k stadium. Not a re-hash of the done to death St Marys capacity etc. sigh

Then it shouldn't be on the main forum if the thread isn't related to Saints. Potential rivals improving infrastructure and then comparing it with what Saints may or may not do is what this thread should be about if it stays on the main forum rather than being moved.

Yes. None of those things will better enable us to compete at any higher level than now.

Kinda like Reading and Bolton having hotels has not catapulted them into the Champions League, and Chelsea are in the Champions League because of a billionaire owner, not because they have a hotel.

That stuff is neither here nor there if the objective is competing at the highest level possible.

Cardiff and QPR are potential rivals? I thought you said we were bigger than Villa and Everton?

They are both looking to expand their stadium capacities to circa 40k and Cardiff for example were competing with us for transfer targets (Wanyama) in the summer. QPR may be competing with us for transfer targets next summer if they get promoted again.

You do enjoy making things up don't you, I said no such thing.

**** me. CB Fry and Turkish arrive on a thread, and off they'll go laughing at their own straw man arguments. MLG may be like having the most boring teacher at school, but those two are like two little boys causing trouble from the back and thinking themselves so grown up.

I'm not particularly interested in QPR, so their plans evoke only mild interest, but the reactions/arguments/wording from the two are far more boring and tiresome than MLG's factual stuff.

Why post on a thread about QPR then?

.

That sounds like you are talking about "merely adding extra seats" there, MLG. Is it about that after all then?

And at last we agree. Villa and Everton are bigger clubs than us. And our expectations are not to be competing regularly for CL spots with Chelsea and Man U but with QPR and Cardiff in the clogged up middle of the Premier League.

I reckon our stadium is big enough for that to be honest.

I didn't say that either. Reading comprehension is tough stuff for some.

Yes it is. But weren't you claiming that Saints 32K stadium wasn't big enough based upon our previous years in the PL? 4 years of gates seemed enough in your eyes to justify expansion up to 40K. Bearing in mind that chucking on additional seats typically costs a lot more than building the seats in the first place (rumoured to be at least 3x times the original cost in our case) the only logic for that can be checking if 28K - 30K is big enough in the first place. And being as Saints went from 15K to 32K then very quickly were told by some fans that the capacity wasn't big enough, I'm not sure I see why QPR shouldn't use that as a benchmark of sorts as to why they might be able to go from an 18K start point to 40K but without the need for the 28K middle ground stadium in between in between. brighton are another example of how a fanbase can be grown from very humble starts to very sizeable crowds in very short times (8K - 32K for Brighton). Plus, for QPR, the difference in cost to them between building 28K and 40K probably isn't a huge proportion in the general scheme of things.

I think the most interesting part about this planned development - is the location. It is located near to the HS2 "hub" that will be finished by our charming government. This area will then (theoretically) become busier and attract businesses. The idea that they are moving it there in hope of new fan-base is a ridiculous one, but if you think about the facitlities a stadium has - conference rooms, suites etc it is a perfect place to rent out for business meetings with people from the north. As well as this the regeneration of the area, with hotels etc will again help to increase the wealth of the region. Chances are the club will have to subsidise and pay for a large amount of the regeneration work itself (Sainsburys do this frequently). And with the increase in jobs this may not be a bad thing, the council are likely to approve this IMO.
