Saint-Armstrong Posted 12 December, 2013 Share Posted 12 December, 2013 Has retired from international football aged 37. Would've liked to see him at a World Cup again, but wasn't to be. That pesky Ronaldo. He holds the record for most appearances for Sweden, with 148 - beating Ravelli's 143. He played at 2 World Cups and 2 European Championships. Best Anders memories? KelvinsRightGlove Posted 12 December, 2013 Share Posted 12 December, 2013 That goal against spurs in the 4-0 cup win. Spurs made him look like a world beater, not a single player came close to challenging him!

Colinjb Posted 12 December, 2013 Share Posted 12 December, 2013 Not a Saints memory but that free kick v the Argies in 2002. Magic. If only he had stayed to help us get back up in 2005. He would have torn up the Championship.

The9 Posted 12 December, 2013 Share Posted 12 December, 2013 This. What a fantastic game that was. Wasn't that live on TV? Yup, I watched it in a pub in South Wales with a Spurs fan. The BBC even ran an article on how Strachan was pleased the country could see how good Saints were... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/fa_cup/2628293.stm
Badger Posted 12 December, 2013 Share Posted 12 December, 2013 Best recollection - the spurs game immediately springs to mind. Always liked Anders but just felt he could not up meet the demands of the premiership week in week out to reach his full potential with us. This was about when I started going regularly, and really caught the Saints bug. I'll never forget Lineker on MOTD saying how saints got through with the help of a couple of "Sven's sons". bpsaint Posted 13 December, 2013 Share Posted 13 December, 2013 I liked Anders, thought he was a very decent player, but was perhaps a bit too technical for the way we played football back then. He'd have been a hell of a player in the Adkins team I reckon. As mentioned above that spurs game in the cup is probably my favourite memory of him, or his MOTM performance away at Leicester which was also a 4-0 win. left under a bit of a cloud if I remember rightly, was quoted in the Swedish press about how he was in danger of getting a bad neck from watching all the long balls go over his head, and claiming he'd reveal all about the shambles behind the scenes when he writes an autobiography one day. Mr X Posted 13 December, 2013 Share Posted 13 December, 2013 Had the odd moment of glory for saints and was a decent enough player but overall you'd have to say he underachieved

rooney Posted 13 December, 2013 Share Posted 13 December, 2013 Anders never fulfilled the goal scoring potential he had before he came to us. I remember he was having one of his best games V Fulham away when Wiggles pulled him off to a chorus of "you don't know what your doing" from Saints fans. Saint Charlie Posted 13 December, 2013 Share Posted 13 December, 2013 Always thought he was incredibly overrated by Saints fans and never did anything of note in England.
beancounter saint Posted 13 December, 2013 Share Posted 13 December, 2013 Has anyone else noticed the striking resemblance between Anders Svensson and sometime lead singer of Survivor Dave Bickler? Whenever I see the video for Eye of the Tiger I start thinking it actually is Anders Svensson (even though he would have been about 6 at the time!) I would post a picture but that's a bit beyond me. melmacian_saint Posted 13 December, 2013 Share Posted 13 December, 2013 The Gaston Ramirez of his day. Pretty much, with a higher work rate and less fancy touches because of his Scandinavian nature. Which really is the reason why he stayed for 4 years while Gaston is unlikely to make it past half.
Bad Wolf Posted 13 December, 2013 Share Posted 13 December, 2013 His strike against Blackburn. Made it 2-2 I think and then Beattie scored in the last minute with a penalty.
lifeintheslowlane Posted 13 December, 2013 Share Posted 13 December, 2013 Pre-season 2004 in Sweden where he was mobbed everywhere. After the first game in the back of beyond there we a couple of young girls with white T shirts with "I Love Anders" on them. They were too bashful to go up to him and the team were about to leave on the team bus. I said, "go on he won't bite" but they were still too shy so I called Anders over and they finally got their pictures. He was great, signed their progammes and gave them each a little peck on the cheek. Needless to say, it made their day...probably their year. david in sweden Posted 13 December, 2013 Share Posted 13 December, 2013 interestingly though, he's just REFUSED " a gift " of a new car. The Swedish FA organised a special surprise (a brand new Volvo) - as a present for Anders to commemorate his 148 caps, but then he discovered that he would have to pay the Swedish Gift tax on it, and with his salary....he'd have to pay for almost the entire value of the car.....over £20K.... so he politely refused and they offered him a deal for a 3 year contract on a leasing car instead. A bit embarrassing all round really.....but such is life for the rich in Sweden.
