Anyone else think we're so slow?

Surely I'm not the only one slightly disappointed with the draw?

City were w@nk and there for the taking 2nd half especially, our inability to kill games off is beginning to make my blood boil. Always on top, always dominating, never seem to have that cutting edge. Miss the days we were put under the cosh for 90 minutes yet still came away with something.

Point of this thread: Why are our buildups so friggin slow???

We seem obsessed with keeping the ball! Sideways passes, back and forth in the middle of the pitch, not to mention those horrendous back passes to the keeper (Fonte especially) that are a) needless, b) wasting time, c) putting the keeper under unnecessary pressure.

Is this part of MoPo's tactics? The two players showing any sense of urgency (Ossie and Lallana) were taken off, while many of the slower culprits were kept on (Cork, JWP, Davis). I was amazed at both subs.

Is he giving the team instructions to hold on to the ball at all costs? The number of meaningless high percentage passes was getting ridiculous 2nd half, City were there for the taking imho. Notice our only goal came from a quick ball down the line and quick thinking on the goalscorer's part. Nice change, it worked!

Almost every attack after the goal came to nothing as City had plenty of time to organise defensively and get all their players behind the ball. This made for a quite boring 45 minutes I must say. We obviously struggled to break them down or create any clear cut chances because moving forward we were so. friggin. slow.

Thoughts?

Thought we were much better in final 3rd today. Davis and Cork were excellent and got the ball forward early. Plus Lallana had a great game. Likewise Shaw got forward more than recently.

How are these three words in the same sentence?

Also Lallana had one of his poorer performances this season (mainly because he's been absolutely superb in other games). Thought he made a few wrong decisions and looked a pedestrian for long spells second half.

It's a deliberate tactic to give us a breather from our high pressing game. Keep the ball and use less energy.

Defensive tactic too - we have the ball, they can't score.

Also allows us to try and control the tempo and direction of the match.

When we have the ball, we don't score. When we don't, the opposition score. Maybe the high pressing tactic is not so clever after all?

Definitely worst in the league (though I haven't checked tbh).

Comedy gold right there. I didn't realise possession to goals ratio was a key metric but an interesting concept. I am still keen to understand how we have managed to score goals despite you claiming we don't when we have the ball. Genuine question.

Nowhere near as much as we should be scoring mate. We're averaging less than 1.5 goals a game. Very, very poor.

Finding negatives in a performance like that, considering the opposition and our injuries, is a truly remarkable feat of the imagination. Great thread for that reason alone.

To be fair - Adkins used to look for 5 positives and 2 negatives - if you ignore the negatives in any positive performance or result ... you dont improve. I have no problem with folks analysing a performance and finding 'negatives' - or as most sensible folk would suggest 'areas in which we can improve'. And thats the point - improvement comes from working hard, gaining experience and develpoing both indicidually and as a unit. Under Pards, Adkins and now MP, we have improved year on year with both additions to the squad and development of our own talent.

So when some on here go ape when we lose, or criticise individuals such a Ramierez or Osvaldo.... on and on and on... you realise quite quickly that they are either completely ignorant of the game, or trolls. Osvaldo and Ramierez come under greater scrutiny because of their price tag, fair enough. Maybe they come good, maybe they dont.... but thats life, and thats football - all clubs have this problem, no one gets it 100% right, which is why bringing up our own is so much more risk free - some will make the grade, some wont, but it dont cost 15 mil Euros. But lets be honest, Osvaldo and Ramierez have struggled to date. But we have two choices as fans - we either support them and hope they settle down and gain confidence and show what their undoubted talent can do, or we just slag em off... which does... what exactly? Feck all?

Us 'clappies' can see the same 'negatives' as the miserable c**ts and WUMS - we just dont see any value in pointing it out every five minutes. It does feck all good. Instead we hope that the environment, team spirit, support and positive culture that seems to be the big Plus at the club, work to bring the best out of them.

As to the positivity about where we might finish? Well that aint naive either - its just that some like to look at life with the perspective of what is possible - not dwell on the probable - its a positive outlook sure, but make life much more entertaining.

Our Tiroler is just a reactionary. Over emotive, probably as he has limited oportunity to see full games and as such can not see or appreciate work off the ball etc or how well we may play, even if the result goes against us. Worth a pint or two to try and knock a little saints positivity into him ;-)

Great post Franks Cousin. The WUM's on here are bringing this place down. Was able to go to the game today(haven't been able to the last few games because of work), and the difference between real Saints fans and a few on here are poles apart.

In the stadium me get behind the players, encourage and applaud moves that don't work out but were obviously worth a go.

We were great today. Cork especially IMHO. We moved the ball around well and tried different approaches to breaking them down. We deserved the three points, bit the usual trolls and idiots on here still try and focus on any negatives they can for effect. Sad sad people.

I'm so happy to be a Saints fan and am loving our journey.

The WUMs on here clearly never go to games, or indeed have a life given they're in here moaning from 6am to 11pm every day #desperatelysad

Well reasoned post, I consider myself a supporter first and foremost...this doesn't mean that I'm blind to mistakes and deficiencies - just that they aren't the all-consuming reason for my attendance on a forum.

For what it's worth I do believe that Alpine is a Saints supporter, the others I wouldn't dignify with the second part of that description and at least one is a blatant skate. Due to work and distance I only get to see around 25 games a year and this forum is/was a good medium for staying in touch but it has been tainted by a few with strange agendas.

If I was looking for 2 negatives I would say;

1) Poor defensively for the goal we conceded. First off, Chambers, for as good as a game he had, got caught ball watching and allowed Kolarov to get a step ahead on the outside so he could deliver the cross. It wasn't a particularly good cross either but managed to beat 5 players on its way to Aguero. Only two realistically could have got a touch on it but facing their own goal decided not to. And then when the shot came in, it was pretty central and only a yard or so from Gazzaniga. It beat him pretty easily.

2) No I can't think of another negative. We were absolute class.
