Lallana - fantastic! Cork had a very good game and a classic from Dave Merrington on Radio Solent. On 80 minutes he said "What Saints don't want to do now is lose the game". Thanks for that Dave! I thought it would be OK if we conceded a couple.

Great effort, spectacular result but not buying all the Chambers love. Granted a great prospect and lots of effort going forwards but City looked most effective attacking down their left and Chambers' pace, or lack of, was exposed for the goal. Great to see him coming through but lots of improvement still required before he challenges Clyne.

Really? Considering it was only his 5th game I thought he did very well and got forward more than he has done in his other performances. No his not as good as Clyne, who is one if the best right backs in the division. Very good back up for now.

From the city thread:

"How the **** do Southampton seem to have more players attacking than we do defending and they have more players defending than we have attackers when going forward.

The mind boggles.."

And why do I always feel happy when I see a loose ball? Because I know that a player in red will be picking it up? This is NOT the old Saints I used to know! :D

Cork must stay in after this performance alongside his old buddy Schneiderlin and Clyne will have to bust a gut to displace Chambers again and how good is it to have a battler like Steve Davis to fall back on. Despite their stars and a mild afternoon which should have suited them, City were second best all match. There's no harmony there and clearly none of them give a toss about Man City as a club, they do enough for your dosh and wait for the next lucrative transfer.

Since we are about to supply half the England team why not sign Joe Hart in January, he's just the right age for our team and ha stye type of attitude that would fit in well here.

Keep it up Saint's. Corky MotM by a mile!

showed great character to not let our heads down after going behind so early in the game and we definitely deserved our point if not more. Very good result considering the injuries, might have gotten more if our injured players were available?

motm for me chambers, looked like he had been playing in the top flight for years. so proud of our academy grads

Chambers was good but not the best of the full backs today in my opinion, Shaw offered a lot more going forward and put in some great crosses (one of which Chambers should have buried), and also Chambers I think was partly at fault for the goal, he was slow to react to the ball down the side. Considering he hasn't played for a while and the opposition, still did very well, but with Clyne in the team I think we might have won today.

I had Shaw, Cork, Lallana and Davis all close for MOM. Great performance overall, amazing goal from Dani... but he was wasteful with the easier chances. Deserves to stay in the side though.

Great performance, great point and hopefully a quick bounce back to form from here.

Really great to see Cork back on the pitch, shows how important strength in depth is. It was a tough break for him being dropped as he was but I always knew he'd play an important part at some stage.

Watch out premier league, Ossie's getting to grips with the play and there's going to be more where that one came from over the following months.

By the end of the season I predict he'll do to his doubters what Boruc did to his, i.e.make them eat their words.

Said the same about Boruc 12 months ago and I see Ossie following the same path - just give him regular games.

I was so proud! This team if allowed to grow together and keep their manager will be great

What I find so encouraging is that we can chop and change the team (mainly through injuries in this case) and still give a great team performance with the emphasis on the team aspect. Players come in who have been out of the first 11, indeed the squad, and give great performances. We have great depth, even if, on paper, some of these might be considered 'lesser' players than those getting regular games. MP has clearly got the whole squad motivated, fit and focused.

And another one:

Some proper negativity on this thread.

Extremely valuable point against IMO the best team we've played all season bar Bayern.

Thought we were extremely resilient and solid as ****. Their goal was a worldy finish and I have to hold my hands up and say fair ****s to osvaldo. Other than that they didn't get a guilt edged chance to score despite a lot of possession. They threw a variety of situations at us and we handled them well.

Annoyingly we had 3 chances at 0-1 to finish the game but were wasteful. This has cost us the 3 pts.

In the grand scheme of the season a point at st Mary's is and will prove to be a very respectable and significant point. They will finish top 5 and are a very very good side.

I fancy Everton tomorrow. Chelsea dropped points. Utd are hilariously ****.

A decent weekend in my book.

because not all Man City fans are as blinkered as those belonging to other clubs.

Well Done Saints !!!!!

Coming off the back of three successive defeats Arsenal 0-2, Chelsea 1-3, and Villa 2-3, Saints more than held their own againsst what was THE in form team (Man City)

The so called "Reseves" drafted in by MP did us proud, and with the crowd behind them, gained a valuable point.

Must have put a few noses out of joint, but in the case of Lawrenson, that would have been an improvement

I had a feeling we'd do something today, I just don't rate Man City away from home and defensively they are pretty atrocious, so I knew if we pressed them high from the off we'd cause them all sorts of problems. We did start a little slow, but after 15 mins we got to grips with it and absolutely dominated City.

We pressed, harried and panicked them which never, ever let them settle. It would have been easy for our heads to drop after going 1-0 down and allow City to really crank it up, but credit to the lads, they stuck at it and kept going, and going, and going.....

In terms of quality, I thought it was a great match to watch. Some fantastic football on show with some really quick and incisive attacking moves.

You have to applaud Jack Cork, so long on the side lines and he comes back in to produce a game like that. He was terrific. His passing was brilliant, his breaking up of play was brilliant and his general reading and ability to be in the right positions was excellent. He was my MOTM. But defensively. apart from an odd 1st goal, we were back to our best. We didn't really let them dominate the midfield, so we limited the chances that way, however when they did get an opportunity we were very strong and resolute at the back - especially Fonte, who has had a great year.

But take a bow Osvaldo, that was a goal of the highest, highest quality, and that's what he's capable of. I thought he had a good game on Wednesday, but he was as good today. He made some really good moves in behind their back 4, but we were sometimes a little slow in picking him out - but the goal he scored was just out of nothing, we don't have anyone else who could have done that.

Overall, with the injures we have and the players we had out, it was an exceptional effort from the lads. As they say, good teams don't often lose more than 3 on the bounce...

Good performance, we created the better chances and on another day could have won.

Gazzaniga - 6 - Was OK, one weird decision second half but wqas generally ok

Chambers - 8 - Excellent. Man City got very little down his side and had a good chance to score in the first half that he was unlucky with, best he's played in an attacking sense, seemed more confident in his ability to attack.

Lovren - 8 - Very good game, helped keep City at arms length for most of the match. The cheer when he came back on to the pitch after that knock he took shows how important he is to the team.

Fonte - 8.5 - Was as good as Lovren, and his tackle and pass started off the play for our goal.

Shaw - 7 - Excellent going forwards, caught a few times at the back in the first half though

Cork - 8 - Bounced back after a poor Villa performance and showed that he will be an important player for us in the coming weeks

JWP - 8.5 - Looked much better in his preferred position, not afraid to get stuck in and showed signs that he could be that player with the killer pass that we sometimes lack. Set pieces were good as usual.

Davis - 9 - Was my MotM, classic box to box midfield performance, absolutely everywhere.

Lallana - 7 - Some good runs and created a few dangerous situations, but I felt he was one player who perhaps did tire second half.

Rodriguez - 7 - Numerous dangerous runs and had a couple of chances he may be disappointed he did not do better with.

Osvaldo - 8 - World class goal aside, looks to be coming to terms with the PL. Led from the front and his constant attempts to run behind encouraged the midfield to play it forward quicker.

Subs: Lambert - 7 - Held the ball up, played a part in creating a chance for J-Rod.

Ramirez - 6 - some decent touches, but not really on long enough to effect the game

Reed - Not enough time to judge either way.

How you say that jwp was better than cork god knows. Cork ran the game and prowse lost the ball 4 times second half

Davis was absolutely superb today, his energy is immense. Were a better side with him in it and actually he and Cork did as good a role as VW/MS have been

I'd like to see Osvaldo start now with SRL off the bench, the more he is playing the better and sharper he looks and the goals will come. He also needs to get on the same wavelength as Lallana which again will come

The Oswaldo ******** has shown up the ones who know fork all about the game yet again

Great attitude from the whole team - the players coming in are a credit . Mark difference listening to Big Fat Sam on Sky, bemoaning about injuries , problems getting 11 ready plus 7 subs for next week - Our academy is producing quality LS, AL, CC, JWP & HR - keep looking up Sam love it ..................

So many players deserve honourable mentions after this game,

Cork motm for me. His passing was on point the whole game.

Adam Lallana was class as per.

Calum Chambers looked very confident at right back, definitely pushing Clyne for a starting spot after tonight, showed some excellent touches.

Dani Osvaldo was lively, worked hard to press the city defence, deserved his goal which showed the class he has.

Lovren was solid as usual, another quality performance from a great signing pretty sure everyone was shitting it when he went off injured, thank god he was Ok.

A solid all round performance which deserved all 3 points

Great performance. I predicted a defeat with the injuries in key positions. City weren't right on it, and had good chances to go 2-0 up which they'd normally take, but we played well.

Gazza - 4 - Thank **** we defended well and city's shooting was mainly off target, or non existent. He is a liability and doesn't even try to command his area. We were panicky at the back in the first 20 mins with the defence having no confidence in him.

Chambers - 8 - Really solid game. Went forward well, good on the ball, and dealt with Aguero and Nasri really well when they came wide.

Fonte - 7 - Solid

Lovren - 8 - Brilliant as always. Commanding and so good with the ball at his feet.

Shaw - 8 - was allowed to get forward lots, brilliant crossing. Defended well as usual.

Cork - 7 - Caught in possession a few times, but got about and nicked possession back countless times. Managed Toure well.

Davis - 7 - Solid. Worked tirelessly, tidy in possession as always.

JWP - 7 - Another solid game. Set pieces good.

Lallana - 8 - MOTM. Gave city all sorts of problems. Ran at players, tricks & turns, good crosses, tracked back. Can we clone him? What a season he's having.

Rodriguez - 6 - Couple of decent chances. Needs a trick or 2. So many times he runs at pace at panicking defenders, but doesn't know how to beat them and runs into them. Common theme this season. Gives teams something to think about though.

Osvaldo - 8 - Best game yet. Dangerous, and what a goal! Long may it continue.

Lambert - 6 - Not involved too heavily. Some good touches but no chances.

Ramirez - 5 - Came on, wasted an attacking free kick, failed to play the ball early enough on a promising counter attack, full time.

Reed - N/A

Disappointing, only a slight improvement from Wednesday imho.

City, call them one of the "big boys", "title challengers", etc., were absolute w@nk and why we were unable to put the game to bed second half is anyone's guess.

Cork was solid defensively, Davis looked energetic, JWP okay, Lallana and Ossie threatened sporadically, Jayrod anonymous as always.

+1 for atmosphere today though!

An utterly shocking result, really don't know how we managed that with the team we put out.

Very pleased with the point, but can't help but think 3 would've been much much more useful in the long term.

No sh*t sherlock.

Games like today are why we will never get into champions league or even top 6 with this muppet of a manager. Dominating, on top, looking for a winner, and what does he do? Take off our two biggest goal threats all afternoon.
