colman1860 Posted 9 December, 2013 Posted 9 December, 2013 Anyone know how soon the FA usually waits before they release the exact date/time these are scheduled for?
colman1860 Posted 9 December, 2013 Posted 9 December, 2013 *how long they wait...going to be brilliant when I get to edit my posts!
Chez Posted 9 December, 2013 Posted 9 December, 2013 Hope we really try to win this trophy. Other than the finance officer, who in a year or so's time will really care if we finished 7th or 15th? I know we all would like to think that this side will stick together for the next 10 years, but it might just be that it doesn't and this turns out to be the best team we will see for a while, so lets bloody go all out and win it.

dubai_phil Posted 9 December, 2013 Posted 9 December, 2013 I would be surprised if Burnley put out a full strength team for this, promotion is worth so much more to them than a small cup run (realistically, they aren't going to win it). I would also put out a reserve team as the fixtures always pile up around this time of year. Maybe give Banega his debut too. Kelvin Chambers - Yoshi - Tuesday night Jos - Fox Cork - Reed Davis - Gaston - Isgrove Lambert That would pretty much have been our first 11 at the start of last season and it should have enough quality to do the business against Burnley reserves. Meh Cork & Gaston will be first choice 1st teamers by then as might Harry Reed.

If they were the only options I'd agree with you but I'm inclined to believe this team is capable of more than 7th. 4th maybe be ambitious but with Man Utd so badly out of sorts this season it could well be our best ever chance. Thinking of the future, players don't join a team because they've won the cup. They join teams who look likely to be nearer the top of the league in the future. If we do pull off an unlikely cup win and finish 15th, we aren't going to be attracting the same names as we would if we were 6th and 5 points off a Champions League spot. We are also more likely to hold on to the likes of Lallana, Shaw and JWP if they see genuine progress up the league. Winning a cup takes more than a small slice of luck. I don't understand people saying we should 'aim for' a cup final or 'at least the QF' when progress depends so largely on the draw. In 2010 we got knocked out by Man Utd in the 3rd round, in 2008 we got knocked out in the 5th by Bristol Rovers. Would you judge the latter as the greater success? If we played our first team against Burnley, won, then got a trip to the Etihad in the 4th round it would seem a pretty pointless exercise. Especially if say, Lovren got crocked for 6 weeks.
dubai_phil Posted 9 December, 2013 Posted 9 December, 2013 The Cups must now be regarded as the vehicle in which our Youngsters are blooded. The further we go (with a smattering of experienced pros around them) the more of them should get a start. The Conveyor belt must keep running and give the kids that first step. We saw glimpses on Saturday from Harry Reed when he came on as sub, the game time in the Carling Cup meant that we actually had a kid on the bench who was ready to come and do a job for the team. Equally, the cup gave Cork & Hooiveld at least SOME football and apart from the one mistake, neither looked out of place at the Emirates or against Citeh. Gallagher should certainly start against Burnley as should Reed & Chambers, along with any of the first team who are short of game time. IF we create the squad by adding quality youth and a few players better than we have, within a year or so our "Cup Squad" will be better than a number of promoted clubs' first teams. It's what happens when you plan and keep hold of talent, but they WILL need games, and the first team WILL need more rotation.

How about we just put out our strongest side each round and see where that takes us? Throwing the towel in because we might get Man City away in the next round seems crazy to me. No reason why we can't get to the cup final AND continue to do well in the league. How much of a negative effect did the 05 cup run have on our league position? Best Prem finish as I recall.

I'm not saying we should be launching any bathroom furnishings, there is a difference between that and playing a rotated side. I'm not saying we should do a Redknapp and stick the youth team out so he can complain about being 'down to the bare bones'. The team I mentioned above however, with players like Cork, Lambert, Yoshida, Kelvin and Hooiveld should have enough to beat a team like Burnley.
Saint_Tony Posted 9 December, 2013 Posted 9 December, 2013 We should try and win the competition. I think we've proved that with our squad we are capable of finishing in the top 10. A few extra games in a cup run shouldn't prevent us from finishing in the top half

I don't think MP ever throws the towel in... as per Saturday with 4 'squad' players we could easily have beaten Man City. What you are basically saying is that everyone will go mental if we get knocked out and blame it on team selection.. and I think MP puts out every team thinking its going to win.. you have little faith in the squad apparently.
LGTL Posted 9 December, 2013 Posted 9 December, 2013 FA Cup isn't midweek, all games are on a weekend and take priority over the league. Absolutely no reason why we shouldn't be playing a full strength team for each game.

Four forced changes is one thing, but we made 11 changes for the league cup games. Against league 2 teams that might be ok, but championship sides, especially one playing very well deserve more respect. It's not necessarily that squad players are not good enough, but teams play well because players play together, gelling, forming partnerships, patterns of play, understanding etc. 11 slightly worse players playing as a unit for the first time in weeks leads to difficulty. I see no reason why our first team should not start against burnley. Saying you have put out a team to win is very different from putting out your best team. I prefer the latter. The sooner we match the skates 4 trophies the better.

JRM Posted 12 December, 2013 Posted 12 December, 2013 Interesting that they are opening the whole ground for this, not sure if many will go with it being a few days after chelsea and just a week before WBA. Prices not bad, but not cheap enough to tempt people just after xmas.
JRM Posted 12 December, 2013 Posted 12 December, 2013 20 loyalty points for this one lads. get in quick before they are gone! what i really don't understand about the "loyalty" points, is every single home game has just gone straight on general sale, why not have some kind of priority period for those who have attended multiple home games already this season.
Lets B Avenue Posted 12 December, 2013 Posted 12 December, 2013 20 loyalty points for this one lads. I must be up to about 1000 now. I'm running out of space in my flat to keep them all.
bpsaint Posted 12 December, 2013 Posted 12 December, 2013 Pretty uninspiring choice of TV games apart from the North London derby. Genuinely thought we might get a look in considering how ours and Burnley's league seasons are going.

The9 Posted 12 December, 2013 Posted 12 December, 2013 Pretty sad that the cup is now seen like this. It wasn't that long ago that we got a crowd of 26k against Bury at similar prices to this one. 2007/8 to be exact - but that was in the 4th Round and given that we only got about 18,000 in the two league games either side I'd be inclined to think the prices were a LOT lower than £20. We also didn't win in the next 10 matches, including losing to Bristol Rovers in the 5th Round.
The9 Posted 12 December, 2013 Posted 12 December, 2013 As have Burnley (albeit on 21st rather than 22nd), so I doubt they'll put a full first team out for this. Ah, but they're in the Championship so they have loads more midweek matches and are more used to the rapid recovery process needed. I'm only half joking.

The9 Posted 12 December, 2013 Posted 12 December, 2013 Threadjack, just been rummaging to see if I can find the cost of the Bury tickets, and found the "Class of 2005" article from October 2007. Contains pen pictures of Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott. http://web.archive.org/web/20071027100816/http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/news/?page_id=5248 Oh, and remember that Dundee United player who got sent off for grabbing the linesman by the throat? Skate who scored in their Youth team's 2008 3-1 win against our U18s... how times change: http://web.archive.org/web/20081212001256/http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/news/?page_id=11050

100% Saint Posted 12 December, 2013 Posted 12 December, 2013 This would be my possible team as we are playing alot of games around then: ---------Gazzaniga--------- Chambers-Jos-Maya-Targett -----Reed--------Cork------ Isgrove----Ramirez*---Rowe ---------Gallagher---------- *If he's still here

Centre backs - Christ, I had thought of coming down for this match but suggestion of Jos & Yoshida makes a rethink necessary. Be surprised if Fox does not play. Can't see all those experiments being made to be honest, and maybe one or two coming back from injury might feature.

There are people on this forum who think it is "naive" to think we can progress to the later stages of a cup and finish top ten/eight but I'm not one of them. Funny how Gordon Strachan managed it with far fewer resources than MP has got now but the way some of you lot talk you'd think we've got some threadbare patched up mini-squad.
