77% Possession

"One-sided game"

"Freakish result"

"Lost to a worldy"

"Unlucky tonight"

I'm sorry folks, but to have 77% possession and end up losing means we are absolutely gash. What that possession means is we had 90*0.77 = 69 minutes of the ball at our players' feet to do more or less whatever we wanted with it.

There are plenty of choices a football team in possession could make. We could choose to peg the opposition back and penetrate their backline with incisive passing, choose to bombard their defence and keeper with crosses and shots, or even choose to wear them out with quick one touch passing and lots of intelligent off the ball running. Instead, for 69 minutes, here's what we chose to do:

Run around aimlessly, with or without the ball, being as ineffective as possible (Rodriguez:facepalm:)

Lounge about in and around the 18 yard box doing nothing in particular (Lambert:facepalm:)

Try fancy little tricks and end up losing the ball (Osvaldo:facepalm:)

Play the ball sideways, then sideways again, and sideways again (Cork:facepalm:)

Make surging runs with the ball, go nowhere, end up cutting back, play ball sideways (Shaw:facepalm:)

If all else fails, HOOF! (Fonte, Yoshida)

(Thought Davis, Lallana, Clyne, and the ever dependable Lovren had solid, if unspectacular nights.)

In the end, football is all about the choices that you make, and making sure you make the right choices. Credit to Villa, they didn't have that many choices to make with only 23% possession - yet made the right one everytime!

If we have 77% of the ball against a (let's be honest) quite mediocre side with an especially weak defence, and we only create as many clear cut chances and score as few goals as we did, we only have ourselves to blame.

Kiss the Champions League, top 6, top 8, and perhaps even a top 10 finish goodbye.

Awful, awful night.

You do realise the ball is not in play for 90 minutes don't you?

100% agree with you on this one Persaint. Needs highlighting that we have had so much possession yet get such a crap result !!! Something is obviously very wrong with the confidence and mindset of the squad at the moment. Time to sort it out and quickly. Personally think that it's the lack of a decent capable keeper. How the hell do you go from the 2nd best defence in Europe to this complete sham in just weeks ???

Mate, it's just a game. It's not worth getting worked up about.

Good post and can we stick to the thread without insults please, its one way traffic here, the point well made is if we have the ball the majority of the time we can not cling on to that as a comfort blanket, its actually a reason or one of them why we lost, we had a lot of the ball but we did not penetrate enough. If we had 30% and still lost but 2-3 then you could look at it differently.

This isn't meant as an insult, but I think it would help people to understand your posts better...

Who's deflecting what? If we have more possession we should be winning I agree?

I'm just trying to help you come across as someone with a modicum of intelligence, not the person we see (read) before us. You should appreciate that people want to help you.

There should be a comma in there Jeff.

Fonte was our best crosser of the ball tonight, Cork played some good forward balls and had two shots, Lambert was once again out wide more than in the middle and JRod worked his socks off running the channels, closing players down and scored an important goal.

I'll give you Shaw though, didn't have the beating of his man all night.

Happy to help correct you.

Say what you like but those of us that have a few brain cells could clearly see that we had the easiest start out of most of the league. Now we're starting to lose a few everyone's wetting themselves. It was always going to happen. We will finish between 10th-14th and it will be a decent season. Thank f*ck we can all shut up about Champions League at top 4 now.

We did have an easy start, I pointed this out whilst we were collecting the points andvwas told not to be so negative, youmake hay whilst the sun shines, you will also find the real bed wetters are the happier ones as their dreams and far fetched aspirations whither and die they become far more vitriolic to the people who predicted this and thought it unsustainable due to a weak squad and harder games in the calender.

Good thread, pity the points cant be dealt with properly by the squealers.

But the squealers are the ones who go into meltdown when we lose a game. Sorry but it happens. I saw some stat somewhere about Villa only losing four away games in a long, long time but only to the top teams, they have an excellent away record. Last night you could see why. Yes of course we should be winning games with 77% possession but its been like this all season, the difference in the last few games is that we have begun leaking goals.

The problem mate is not what you say but the way you say it.
