Scoring goals

Another difference to the top teams is that we really haven´t made that push for a goal in the last 10-15 minutes when you commit a lot of players forward and into the box. We made it against Sunderland but more due to some set pieces rather than from open play. Against West Ham, Norwich, Stoke you would like to see that real push for a winner/equaliser but we still dont have that in our team imo.

The big teams have that push to win games in the last 10 minutes.

Isn't that exactly what we did against Man U, West Brom and Liverpool to gain 5 additional points? Interesting that the goals scored by Hull and Chelsea are the only ones to be scored against us this season after we have scored ourselves. Once we have scored we seem to restrict our opponents chances successfully.

Against Liverpool we scored in the "65th-ish" minute, quite early in the second half at least so dont think that one comes in play.

The other two yes. Against West Brom Shaw had a forward run so that one is a good example. I dont remember how we won the corner against Man U put could also be a case.

But I still miss that push in most games....

Our stats dont tell the full story. Despite some people insisting that we were having loads of shots at goal, in truth a lot of them dont really trouble the keeper. According to the stats on sunday we had 9 shots at goal yet we didnt create a single chance or trouble their keeper. Same goes for Man United, people pointed to us having more shots at goal as them as evidence of a fantastic performance, the truth be told De Geye had little to do, all his saves expect one from Clyne were routines ones with shots from distance and we scored from one of our few real chances, Whereas Man United had less shots at goal but hit the woodwork twice and forced Boruc into two or three class saves, it was a great performance at Man United but not for the reasons some claim of because we created loads more than them.

So those that laud our performances based on shots on goal and stats need to have a rethink, if we are having so many attempts at target and scoring so few times it tells us one of two things. Either our strikers are missing a hatful of chances every game and arent up to it or teams are happy to sit back and let us pass it around them and then shoot from distance restricting the threat to the oppositions goal.

Spurs have also had loads of shots at goal this season.

Joint 3rd, our highest League scorer are Rodriguez and Lambert on 4 each, Rodriguez gets it though from open play. We simply dont score or create enough chances, that is the proce to pay for playing a high line though, you stop others and also yourself.

I'd be interested to know how you think playing a high defensive line reduces our chances of scoring goals?

Absolutely right in my opinion - especially away from home. Gaston has the ability to do the job why he cant do this consistently is surely in some ways down to MP's system. I watched 15 minutes of Banega running the show for Valencia on Sunday and that performance was exactly what was missing at Chelsea - great vision, defence splitting passes, vision, and a confident, quick thinking approach to the game.

Who was he playing against?

Congestion, its harder to play the ball on the deck all the time. We are chasing all the time which is fine so when we get the ball often alot of players are out of position and it takes a few passes before we get back to a natural attacking position.

In short breaking down play to attacking takes time, unless you have a Messi or Iniesta of course.

We are the 9th highest scorers in the league this season. Not the end of the world. Especially considering we have the joint best defence so far.

So the toothless formation/lineup that played yesterday would do a better job you think?

Let's face it, like I said in my OP with AL not playing well, we are absolutely clueless:

WBA: penalty

Sunderland: set piece

Norwich: no goals

West Ham: no goals

Liverpool: set piece (by AL)

Palace: AL assist, set piece

Swansea: AL, Jayrod fluke

United: set piece

Fulham: set piece, AL cross

Stoke: Jayrod fluke

Hull: Morgan, AL, penalty(won by AL), Davis

Arsenal: no goals

Chelsea: Jayrod fluke

There you go: take out AL, and take out set pieces, penalties and Jayrod flukes, and we've scored TWICE that's right a paltry TWO LEAGUE GOALS ALL SEASON!

Really need that spark and a breath of fresh air in the team - Ramirez is just the ticket imho.

PS nothing against Jayrod, just for some reason 3 of his 4 league goals this season have been flukes lol

I reckon you should take it bit further, if you exclude all the goals we've scored this season, then we have scored exactly NONE, that's right NO LEAGUE GOALS ALL SEASON!

We need to take it further. Go back to all the time MP has been here and remove all goals we scored and you will have the fact that Gareth Barry is our top scorer!!

2 goals tonight, but with the amount of possesion the creativity and options in the final 3rd were again severly lacking

Agreed. We should have made more of the possession we had, the amount of time we spent in and around their penalty area and the amount of attempts we had.

And again we frequently had the chance to break forward quickly but stopped and waited. We're a slow team - not in terms of pace and running, but tactically.

Last night was frustrating, but the theme has been there since mopo arrived. We play far to central and sideways and try to walk the ball in.

Mopo doesn’t play with "wingers" but most of our goals come from crosses from the wings (both last night for example) its almost like he is too stubborn or is simply missing what we are good and effective at.

Its simple………..get the balls out wide, deliver a decent cross to back post - Lambert gets the nod back = someone taps it in. Its worked for 3 years so why is he so determined to change an effective/working formula???

Lambert has to drop so deep to get the ball now its ridiculous – last night he didn’t manage a single shot on target and touched the ball in the box only twice!! One setup a goal for Osvaldo and the other created a great chance for Lallana in the 1st half. He is effective in the 18 yard box – not so much around the half way line. Mopo doesn’t seem to have recognised this

Under MP: 47 goals in 30 games.

Under NA: 30 goals in 22 games.

You do the math.

I´m great, thanks for asking. Just thought someone on here need to take the job as lie detector so therefor my posts have changed a bit.

Strangely I need to post a lot after your posts in that job....
