Ok, let's have a crack at the match-day squad then...

Gazza

Clyne - Fonte - Lovren - Shaw

JWP - Wanyama

Lambert - Lallana - Jrod

Osvaldo

Subs: Cropper, Chambers, Yoshida, Cork, Davis, Reed, Gallagher

I'm thinking that it would perhaps be better to avoid as many changes to the starting 11 as possible, so I'd slip JWP back into a more defensive midfield role thus keeping Cork and Davis on the bench. This then opens the door for playing both Lambert and Osvaldo with Lambert slotting into JWP's attacking midfield role and Osvaldo up top.

I agree with this line up and formation in theory Lambert should provide plenty of through balls to Osvaldo and he needs to start burying his chances then again from what we've seen those two don't work well together

I'd swap Lambert and Lallana over in that lineup

Is Hooiveld injured? I'd rather have Cork or Davis in for Schneiderlin.

Pochettino has confirmed Boruc will be out for 'several weeks'. Gazzaniga will start v #avfc tomorrow with young Cropper on bench.

Morgan Schneiderlin has a 'muscular fatigue injury' according to Poch and will miss #avfc game but wont be out for a long period.

Poch said current crop of injuries wont force his hand in January as he expects squad to be 95 per cent fit within the fortnight.

Also get the impression Steven Davis and not Jack Cork will deputise for Schneiderlin tomorrow and that Lambert will come back in.

Shaw

Wanyama

Davis

Lallana

J Rod

Lambert

That'd probably be my pick as well. Will be very interesting to see what MP does re Osvaldo/Lambert.

We are definitely lacking creative options in the squad at the moment.

Mods: change the title please.

Either set it to "build up", which it should be, or "bulb up", which it currently is.

Everyone is injured. bloody hell.

Worried about tomorrow, need to get back on track, but not sure that's going to happen.

just to add that if Wanyama gets booked against Villa, he'll miss the City game - and that'll mean no Wanyama or Morgan.

If that's the case then I can see Cork leaving in January to get the first team football he should be playing, seeing as he isn't even first choice backup in his position.

I agree that Cork can't be happy, but I guess the argument is that now MS plays in a more advanced position, S. Davis is his direct replacement and Cork would be the direct replacement for Wanyama, the midfielder that sits in-front and shields the back 4.

He'll get at least one game before Christmas when VW gets his next booking.

Yep & that would be a real shame imo as i really rate Cork but he's not going to hang around if the manager doesn't rate him enough to play him when one of the 1st choice pair are absent.

People not picking Cork in these line-ups .... is that because you are second guessing Poch and trying to pick the line-up you think he will play, or is it because you are picking the team you would like to see playing tommo?

People seem to have v. short memories sometimes - one of our very best players over the previous two seasons, he always brought energy and tempo to our play, he covers a terrific amount of ground, he recycles and keeps possession very well. Would be absolutely ideal player to come in fresh tomorrow, point to prove and he would give a lift to everybody.

JWP (still a very young player) looked like he was running on empty on Sunday, I'd give him the night off and have him ready for Saturday.

Posted

Everyone has Lovren in the starting XI? I noticed on Sunday that he was struggling for a bit in the 2nd half after making a challenge.

I assume that it is nothing to be concerned about as he was able to finish the game?

Losing Boruc, Morgan & Lovren at the same time would be a big, big blow, even if the latter 2 are not selected tomorrow with a view to being available for other upcoming games in a very busy run of fixtures

MP's translator said something like Boruc and Schneiderlin aren't available and there are some others that will be unavailable due to injury too.

I would expect to see more changes besides Schneiderlin and Boruc being replaced.

Am training down from London tomorrow with two mates who are Villa fans (dont worry, they will be in the away end) and they are already feeling a lot more optimistic than they were on Sunday morning. I dont know how to call this one but have a feeling it will be close

The others being K Davis, Fox, Guly and Ramirez. So only two changes needed for the starting line up.

If KD is out how good is Cropper, could he do a job for us?

I really have little faith in Gazza, makes the odd good save but always looks like he's going to drop a clanger. Hopefully against Villa it won't be critical but he's not up to it.

Would be very interesting to see Ramirez and Osvaldo paired up, got a feeling those two could combine well.

Cropper is pretty bad to be honest.

I do agree with the Davis inclusion if I'm honest. I think he's been consistently one of the best players since MP has been here. Keeps the ball well, uses it well, gives us energy through the middle and offers a pretty decent goal threat.

Jack Cork uses the ball and passes it well, but doesn't offer the goal threat. That's what really lets him down to be honest.

And Davis will want to do well against his old club.

If Wanyama starts, MoPo will have confirmed what I've always quietly believed about him - that he is an absolute muppet.

We simply cannot afford to not have him against City (we'd get thrashed) and mark my words he WILL get booked if he plays against Villa.

Posted

Surely though we have a better chance of a win against Villa than Man City. I have confidence for Cork to step in if Wanyama picks up his yellow tomorrow.

Why not start Cork tomorrow? Who would boss the midfield in your opinion - Yaya Toure or Cork?

Depends which Yaya Toure turns up doesn't it. Wasn't great at St Mary's last season with Cork in midfield. Obviously I would prefer Wanyama to Cork against City but I would also like us to have the best possible chance of winning tomorrow.

It's hardly the end of the world if Cork has to step in against City, especially if Morgan is back.

What's more annoying is Gazzaniga playing.

Cropper seemed pretty good in the two USA U-21 games that I watched this past summer.

This is a big week for us, win tomorrow and be full of confidence going into Saturday. I'm confident we can score more goals than them, just need to keep Benteke quiet

Why do u spend so much time on other teams forums? Genuine question.....

Because it's more interesting than reading comments from you and BS from BS.

Why do you spend time on other peoples forums pretending to be someone else?!

You really no nothing about football do you... why would anyone hold a player back based on bookings.. we may as well not play him at all until the booking tally runs out of time..

Indeed. Wouldn't three points tomorrow be better than some possible points on Saturday?

I agree with you, that Villa thread is an interesting read with good discussion.

I'd like to say something more positive, but Cropper has been alternating in the U21's (with Gazzaniga) and has (unfortunately) been the keeper in some of the worst defeats they've had so far.

No direct criticism intended - just quoting the stats.

Posted

I've no idea about Cropper, as have never seen him play, or have barely heard anything about him. But he is our 4th choice keeper, he's not going to be a worldbeater! Especially when our 2nd and 3rd choice are pretty poor. I hope Gazza can show how much he's matured over the last 12 months but I'm not holding my breath!

Palace beat West Ham tonight. Mustn't laugh....

Chuffed for them. And drags WHU back into it after a good win vs Fulham at the weekend. Palace play Cardiff at home on Saturday - could draw level on points with them and West Ham on Sat.

Definitely going to be one of those nights where a decent, up-for-it atmosphere from the fans will make a difference, not groaning in the first 5 mins when something goes wrong or going silent after 20mins if we haven't scored yet.
