Just shows, football is an emotional game for the fans. Emotional decisions however rarely deliver.... hindsight is a blessing though.

Obviously having had a preseason to stamp his mark on the team and bringing in three big money signings in key positions you can see he is a very good manager and also building a good squad. Obviously having had a preseason to stamp his mark on the team and bringing in three big money signings in key positions you can see he is a very good manager and also building a good squad. People were saying it at the end of the season too, pointing out how we stumbled over the finishing line etc. Point is that many of things that have come to fruition this season were pretty evident back then if people had looked close enough. We were already showing clear signs of being organised and difficult to beat, things we've subsequently built on with a full preseason and new signings. Either way, the difference is not night and day as implied by that thread and others.

We has a relatively straightforward run in and didn't win any of our last 6 and were not safe until the penultimate game. Let's not forget the brash claims of top half finishes from Many on here after out little purple patch in March. Anyone that said we still weren't safe and not to get carried away was called a troll and wanting saints to fail. Its easy to look back now sneering and say it was all part of a bigger plan that has come to fruition now but at the back end if last season when we were losing at home to QPR, being spanked by WBA, not winning or scoring and nervously looking over our shoulders it wasn't so obvious. Never bought into the top 10 *******. But we looked a better side -apart from West Brom game, we were compact, defensively sound and difficult to beat. Many of our performances were very encouraging, even if we weren't picking up the points and were the blueprint for how we've played this season. Glasgow_Saint Posted 1 December, 2013 Share Posted 1 December, 2013 Back to the OP don't think anyone had any malice towards mopo, just think some questioned the sense in changing when we already had a top manager. But we looked a better side -apart from West Brom game, we were compact, defensively sound and difficult to beat. Many of our performances were very encouraging, even if we weren't picking up the points and were the blueprint for how we've played this season. That was already happening under Adkins, after our horror start, before he was fired we'd only lost 2 in 12 so you can't claim MP dramatically changed that and made us so much tougher to beat, we already were. You can argue all you want about how MP improved us so much last season but the proof is in the pudding and that is that results weren't any better at the back end of last season and now he's had a preseason and 3 new signings in key positions you can see how he has made us a better team. At the time the thread you are knocking was posted the comments were fair enough.
Turkish Posted 1 December, 2013 Share Posted 1 December, 2013 He was..... He still is Not now he's left. He went from being the new Alex Ferguson to a competent championship manager who was tactically naive in about February this year.
Batman Posted 1 December, 2013 Share Posted 1 December, 2013 I was angry when he came in. Thought adkins was going but never heard of MP and thought he would be a huge flop. how wrong. People from spain ALL pretty much said he was an exciting manager yet, we just looked at him getting the boot from espanyol one thing though. NC has an eye for a decent manager. Not bad for any old CEO/employee in a position where any company exec could do an equal (if not better) job
Legod Third Coming Posted 1 December, 2013 Share Posted 1 December, 2013 Never bought into the top 10 *******. But we looked a better side -apart from West Brom game, we were compact, defensively sound and difficult to beat. Many of our performances were very encouraging, even if we weren't picking up the points and were the blueprint for how we've played this season. I did buy into the top ten and found the season ultimately a bit disappointing. For too long this club has worked within a glass ceiling of expectations - the plucky little south coast club who punched above their weight for 27 years... It's a myth. Sure, we're not a United or Arsenal - it would take decades and more to inherit a fraction of their history. But it's not impossible. And we shouldn't EVER feel it is. Yes football has changed since the 80s when we threatened to be a bigger club for 5/6 years. But football hasn't changed so much that a good team cannot beat good individuals. And we shouldn't lose sight of that. We can compete on the pitch even if we cannot compete financially off it. And a couple of good seasons will bring more cash, better players and so the growth can go on. I doubt we'll achieve a CL place this season, but in 3 seasons from now? Why not. Not bad for any old CEO/employee in a position where any company exec could do an equal (if not better) job NC has an eye for the right manager at the right time. And is ruthless in that regard. And all the better for it. People said Adkins was treated badly. But was he? He was fired - true. But is there a good or bad way to be fired? The football community thought it unfair because he'd managed to get us promoted twice. He did so with unbelievable resources compared to the competition and I will be forever indebted to him for his attitude and approach. But there is no doubt in mind MP is a better manager - tactically and strategically.

What's encouraging is that in all those games against the top 6 we could (and maybe even should) have got something. Especially that game at WHL. This season I don't think Shaw would allow Bale to cut in on his left foot - and thank God we don't need to find out!!

We also outplayed United for most of the game at OT. We just didn't have Lovren and lacked a bit of luck up front...
