THERESE'S BOY

Recommended Posts

Happy Birthday! Was there at the Dell on Easter Monday 1966 when he made his debut. One on one he had no equal. A truly remarkable player and personality. So hard to convey how good these older players were. Given modern training, diet and tactical differences, he would have probably been a world beater. That said it wasn't all about success. He was seen as the natural successor to Martin Chivers when he went to Spuds, but still took a fair while to break into the first team. Was in the Combination Cup team (Reserves) in 1969 but was a first team fixture from the following season onwards. Legend is an overused term these days. Mick Channon was a true legend,

Windmill.

Great memories of great goals.

Does he still breed and train race horses - he had a first rate second career in that arena?

I must confess to not knowing these footnotes to his football career:

After Southampton[edit]

He lasted barely a month at Newcastle before joining Bristol Rovers. His impressive career seemingly on the decline, he failed to score in nine games for Bristol Rovers before a sudden departure again, this time to Norwich City where, at the age of 34, he found some of his old touch. He played 88 games over three seasons, scoring 16 goals, and suffered a mixed end to his Norwich career in 1985 when the club won the League Cup — Channon's second and final domestic honour — with a 1–0 win over Sunderland at Wembley, but were then relegated (with Sunderland) at the end of the same season. Channon joined Portsmouth and Finn Harps (where he played in 1 League of Ireland Cup game) thereafter,[1] before retiring from the game in 1986.

Funny I had just looked up his old team mate (and my hero as a nipper) Phil Boyer who is 64 and 2 months younger!

like someone else said makes you feel a tad old.

Even older when you remember watching Derek Reeves play v Cherries at Dean Court in the Third Division South

I was there too. My first ever game at The Dell as a 9 year old nipper with my old man, (a Pompey fan), watching from the 'boys box". So that's where it all began for me.

I can remember MC getting a lot of stick for falling over a lot and getting called Diane for tripping over her handbag. He proved them wrong eh.

Although I've never met him he's always seemed such a down to earth bloke and I'll always remember in a TV interview prior to the Cup Final in '76 when the interviewer was bigging us up for getting to the final MC retorted 'it's no good getting to the final we want to win the bloody thing'!

I think that showed me that he was a winner and that's followed in his racing career too.

True legend.

For me MC is the greatest post war product of SFC. I know it was a different era and he did briefly do the big club bit but at heart there has only ever been one club in his heart and 600 appearances bears testament to it. He had supreme skill and I have no doubt with modern training and fitness methods he would be a top international. Many happy returns from one moonraker to another.

Me, too!

In his own way Mick was a little bit special and is still the club's leading all-time goal scorer. 600+ apps. and 228 goals. Not forgetting those 45 England caps and 21 goals to boot.

I always wonder if his famous " windmill-arm " action after scoring a goal would get him booked nowadays for "over-enthusiastic celebrations."

Congratulations Mick.....Welcome to " the Club ".

And twas on this day, a child was born...

From Orcheston to Southampton...and now Lord of West Ilsley.

May I be the first to congratulate Michael Roger Channon, who becomes a pensioner tomorrow.

The knowledge of which I'm sure will make many of us feel very very old...

Yep! But we're all in this together. Nobody is being left behind I promise. As for Mick, Good on ya, sport!

Disappointing lack of old Anglo Saxon on that cake.

Slightly before my time but I remember supporting Naarwich for that League Cup final, and I remember spending the next few months (along with every other lad in Southampton) trying to score one touch goals complete with windmill celebration. In fact, the only celebration any 70s kid did was a windmill, loved it when Bridgey did it against Bolton(?)

I have lost an inordinate amount of money on his nags though :(

I lived virtually opposite side of the road to Tommy Traynor where Mick Channon lodged as a teenager. Remember one day helping to push his old Ford Anglia down the road to get it started. Not sure todays young players would have that type of problem. Later, remember going to Wembley with my mates to see Mick play for England - if I remember rightly he scored! Great player and top race horse trainer too - not many people have been so successful in two totally different sports
