norwaysaint Posted 27 November, 2013 Share Posted 27 November, 2013 Taking our current first eleven as Boruc Clyne Fonte Lovren Shaw Wanyama Schneiderlin JRod Lallana JWP Lambert which three past players, in their saints prime (especially relevant for the likes of Bale or Shearer, who hit their prime at other clubs), would you swap into that team to improve us most? It doesn't really work to just name your three favourite players, would MLT really manage our high pressing game? Would Killer complement Lovren best, or be too similar? You may love big Ivan, but is Clyne the best player to replace? Jimmy Case was great, but was he really so much better than Schneiderlin or Wanyama? Keegan would be a good bet, with good fitness, control and team play, we could also get either a clinical finisher like Davies or a fast, skillful player like Pahars. So what's your eleven with your choice of any three saints greats added to our current team?
Tokyo-Saint Posted 27 November, 2013 Share Posted 27 November, 2013 Hi Norway old buddy old pal. I'll have Ronnie Eklund for Jrod and Dean Richards for Fonte please. Nicky Banger for super sub plse.

norwaysaint Posted 27 November, 2013 Author Share Posted 27 November, 2013 Are you both just trying to make me angry! Three first team players, in their SAINTS prime, like I've bloody well underlined and put in bold in the ****ing OP, to avoid exactly that kind of idiocy. Pack it in! First two idiots only put in two players and one picks players I especially mentioned as not being at their post-saints prime! ****S!
Tokyo-Saint Posted 27 November, 2013 Share Posted 27 November, 2013 Are you both just trying to make me angry! I can only speak for myself but most of the time yes. Also, I put Banger, this is 3. This is partly cause he was such a good sub when I was a kid and partly cause he had such a bad Porsche, it reminds me of pre sky footballers. So just to clarify, we are not talking about future Shaw in his 'saints prime' versus 'Bale' here are we?

Turkish Posted 27 November, 2013 Share Posted 27 November, 2013 I think people are missing the point as Norway says, Bale wouldn't get into the current team on his Saints prime FFS I'd go for Mark Wright at the back alongside Lovern, the perfect pairing for centre halves Jimmy Case in the midfield instead of Wanyama You'd have to include Le Tissier. This is obviously only players from my lifetime that i've seen, im sure some of our older fans would include Channon, Paine etc but i never saw them play. I only put 2 players because I'd only take 2 of our ex's to play in today's side. Only 2 with the technical ability and fitness levels to be able to play today's game. Window Cleaner Posted 27 November, 2013 Share Posted 27 November, 2013 Yes he did. He was a great passer and also scored some cracking goals. In a game that time has left behind, look at the old YouTube videos, they're all porky, there's no closing down and players wouldn't get the time and space now that they did then. Football has changed, the old "heroes" would be nothing in today's game.

Football has changed, the old "heroes" would be nothing in today's game. Yes it has, but you could also argue that the soft, pampered players with their fancy boots and bowling green pitches of today wouldn't survive in the 60s, 70's and 80's. This is why it's virtually impossible to compare era with era so you have to take each player on their own merits and what they did at the time, rather than trying to be clever and say they wouldn't cut it today. VectisSaint Posted 27 November, 2013 Share Posted 27 November, 2013 I would swap Boruc for Shilts or Niemi, but apart from that its difficult. Not because the players we have today are the best but they are suited to the system. Trying to put Le Tiss in this system would be a total nightmare, can you imagine him being asked to run around a lot and close down the opponents? Completely laughable. Channon would probably be a shout if he had been trained with the fitness regime we have today, but not sure. Steve Williams would probably suit instead of Wanyama or Morgan, but then I always thought Williams was not so good if he didn't have Bally alongside, and even though I think they are the best MF pairing ever for Saints I'm not sure they could be as effective as the current pair. Marian might be OK in the Johnny Depp role, but it would only last a few games before he got injured. Big Ron instead of Rickie is decent shout, Big Ron was super fit in his day. So I think my conclusion might be Shilts/Niemi and Williams and Pahars or Keegan. But really I think current style of play maybe no-one would actually make it better. UpweySaint Posted 27 November, 2013 Share Posted 27 November, 2013 Niemi for Boruc Anders for JWP Past that i'm not sure. Would love MLT but it'd require a change of formation to accommodate for him, Theo showed flashes of his talent before he left us so not sure he's a fair pick, Shearer again the same as Theo. sandwichsaint Posted 27 November, 2013 Share Posted 27 November, 2013 Frank Worthington in his Saints prime? Didn't he only score two goals and spend most of his time in the boozer? Yes, but what a warm-up! A different trick every week and one of the two most 'natural' footballers I've ever seen, every touch was timed to perfection, pure balance and every touch a caress; the other was Hoddle (booo!) who was the purest ball striker I've ever seen. Bergkamp and Zola both come close, but the cigars go to Frank and Glenn. Think how good Frank might have been .... Good OP, Shilton is a shoo in for me. After that it gets harder, we must have had a good few CH's better than Fonte, Richards and Wright are the stand-out choices for me, Mark Wright goes in alongside Lovren. Where else could we strengthen? I'd be looking for a footballing goalscorer who puts in a shift every game, I don't think you can look any further than KK for that one ............... Shilts ..................... Clyne..... Lovren .... Wright ...... Shaw ..........MS ........ VW ............ JWP ........... Lallana ................ JRod ..................... KK ...................... Boruc Fonte Cork Davis Osvaldo Ramirez SRL Champions League here we come!
Cabrone Posted 27 November, 2013 Share Posted 27 November, 2013 Niemi for Boruc. Killer for Fonte. Rod Wallace for JRod. And Neal Heaney for JWP. That's my 4. Same for me except I'd have MLT for JWP. Couldn't leave Mattie out, just wouldn't be right, besides he'd have a ball supported by big Vic and Morgan + still score a load from pens, free kicks and spectacular shots.
