Dig Dig Posted 28 November, 2013 Share Posted 28 November, 2013 We should stick to players that perform in the English league, whether they're English or not is irrelevant. Had Harry Redknapp signed Gaston for QPR and he played for them like he played for us, would you be sticking up for him quite as much? I suggest that the majority opinion would be that old Arry had been mugged off, or had some sort of deal with his agent. I bet you cant find many neutrals who share the over inflated opinion of Gaston that some on here have. Puncheon isn't good enough either, so I don't know what he's got to do with anything. I doubt anyone outside of Southampton will have much of an opinion at all and I'm not sure what Redkapp has to do with anything, like everyone else you win some and lose some. Whilst it's clear he's not in Pochettino's immediate plans, he had a very good start to life at Saints but then got that nasty injury and then had a family bereavement to deal with back home. Soon afterm, Adkins was gone and he's had to try and adapt to a new manager and a new system which includes players who have played well and got good results and deserve to be in the team instead of him. No need for over reactions like yours, he is just mid price Premier League player who will no doubt go on to have a very successful career. I bet you cant find many neutrals who share the over inflated opinion of Gaston that some on here have. Puncheon isn't good enough either, so I don't know what he's got to do with anything. What is over-inflated about what I have said? He is a talented player - any neutral would say that. You were the one that took issue with that. There must also have been some scouts and people involved at the club that probably know a bit more about football than both of us combined that saw enough talent in him to be willing to part with c.£12m for him. I also said, isn't doesn't look like it's working out for him here and he hasn't delivered to his ability - which when you consider even off form he is still matching the contribution of other players suggests he has some talent. He was doing alright under Adkins, where the majority of his playing time/goals/assists came. The 'excuses' you don't give a flying f about are valid, he is a young man, and he came to a league faster and more physical than Italy. Even a much more experienced international player in Osvaldo has said it is hard to adapt straight away. He's also never really had a settled run in the team since he came here, which clearly doesn't help anyone. All I'm doing is balancing out the arguments, he gets some unfair stick. He isn't lazy, and he clearly isn't crap. He doesn't look suited to the PL, and it doesn't look like we will see the best of him. It's a shame, but we move on. There's no transfer that doesn't contain an element of risk and they don't always work out. This isn't exactly unique to us. Lol @ what has Puncheon got to do with anything - and yet bringing in Harry Hypotheticals. Edited 28 November, 2013 by KelvinsRightGlove

DuncanRG Posted 28 November, 2013 Share Posted 28 November, 2013 We should stick to players that perform in the English league, whether they're English or not is irrelevant. Almost all of the best players in the Premier League come from abroad or youth setups. PL clubs don't sell top players to their rivals, and even when they do it's rarely a success. Van Persie is the only example I can think of.

That's a very good point indeed, and reminds me of the recent debate on here about loan players. If Gaston does end up getting moved on, loan or sale, it'll be interesting to see whether it's to a PL rival or back to foreign pastures. fwiw, I hope he gets a bit longer to make his mark here as I still think he could be massive for us. As others have pointed out above, the clubs he has been linked with are all top european sides, and those mugs Uruguay keep picking him for their national side. Nobody has seriously suggested that he lacks talent, and I think it was Phil Neville who singled him out as the best player he'd faced in last year's prem season? pimpin4rizeal Posted 29 November, 2013 Share Posted 29 November, 2013 What annoys me with this situation is the way fans are getting more and more on his back this season when he has had zero starts in the league, this doesnt mean hes crap at all this is down to pochetino, maybe they had a fall out,or maybe hes just not mps type of player but for christ sake he has done nothing this season to warrant all the abbuse. Personaly i see a great player in gaston but he needs a run in the side I would be really confident of him turning this situation around with a run of games but it may never happen under mp. KelvinsRightGlove Posted 29 November, 2013 Share Posted 29 November, 2013 (edited) adebayor, £25m for 30/40 odd appearances? How many threads would you have started if Saints had done that mate? Also, Carroll? Hardly set the world on fire since leaving Newcastle has he? 60 odd appearances, 13 goals costing £50m - far from a 'success'. Christ the more I look at this post the more I laugh - imagine the uproar on here if we spent £30m on Berbatov for how much he played/contributed. Yes he was topscorer one season - but 8 of his 19(ish) goals came in two games! Edited 29 November, 2013 by KelvinsRightGlove

This to an extent. He has made two starts and scored twice, albeit against poor opponent, but what more can he do without playing? Similar situation to Mata at Chelsea, obviously one of their best players, but doesn't fit their system and the Manager doesn't rate him. You can criticise the situation of course, but not the ability of the player. Its not that we have bought a player who clearly isn't up to the level needed, more that the Manager doesn't see him as a natural fit for the team. JonnyLove Posted 29 November, 2013 Share Posted 29 November, 2013 Didn't MP at pre-season say that gaston will take a long time to get to the level of fitness due to playing in the cup during the summer and missing pre-season (Same was said about yoshi). Gaston has been in and out of the country so much the past 6 months I'm not suprised he's not been picked. Over the Christmas period I expect we will start seeing him a little more.
