Unless we gain points in the next 4 games and start scoring goals I can see us being 9th or 10th. We have to score more as our goal difference isn't at all competitive with the front runners.

Who are you comparing with exactly. Baring Arsenal and Man city, our goal difference is very competitive.

Looking forward to being around midtable again which is inevitably where we'll finish, then all the idiots can shut up about the top 4 b*llocks finally.

Strange logic to that. Would it not be better to remain at the top and all these "idiots" be shown to be right?

Obviously I'd rather we finished higher but the likelihood is that we will finish midtable.

That is different from saying you are "Looking forward to being around midtable again". Why would you look forward to that?

You then go on to say you are looking forward to it because it will "shut the idiots up that talk about 4th". Can you not see why that is a strange logical standpoint and extremely negative?

I'm sure you know what I mean. I'm bored of all the top 4 talk and us looking at Utd/Liverpool/Spurs etc and their results as if we're going to be challenging them for league positions at the end of the season.

Actually, no. I don't think most people will know what you mean. You are tired of optimism? Tired of speculation? Tired of life?

The whole point of the competition, surely, is the hope? Sure, we all know that we are still the underdogs in an almost impossible challenge, but what about the maybe!?

Honestly, I just don't understand where you are coming from when you say that you are looking forward to being mediocre because those that dare to dream are idiots.

I even fail to understand why, with that attitude, you would even follow footy!

I'll rephrase then. When we inevitably drop back down to mid table, I am looking forward to not hearing all the top 4 stuff and the big clubs being classed as our rivals.

Agreed mate. Some of the top 4 stuff has been embarrasing.

We were always going to have a good start, the fixtures dictated that.

I predicted 22 points for us after 11 games, however only 25 points at xmas / after 17 games

maybe 6th, but tight between several sides. Think will be are safely in top 9.

Had a very quick look through the fixtures - I tried to be pessimistic with others being consistent but still had us only 5 points off champions league spots. Was only quick run through and may have been too pessimistic and may have given two top teams the points when they play each other. Reckon something like this...

1 Arsenal 36

2 Chelsea 36

3 Man C 35

4 Liverpool 34

5 Man U 32

6 Saints 29

7 Everton 29

8 Newcastle 29

9 Spurs 28

10 Swansea 22

12 WBA 21

13 Villa 20

14 Hull 17

15 Stoke 17

16 Cardiff 17

Sure MP and NC are aiming higher...they are not embarrassed to aim for top four and wouldn't call anyone deluded for thinking its possible! ;)

Has anyone said 17th?

Some odd comments on this thread.

I am happy that a Cardiff point today kept us above Utd even if it is just for one more week (...maybe). Last season we would have been concerned about a relegation rival.

I'm enjoying the fact that Man City v Spurs has an influence on our league position rather than Stoke V Sunderland. The result today was good for us. City will finish above us, but if we are moving to the next level teams like Spurs are our rival. They play Man Utd next week, if (are my maths are correct?) we don't lose by 3 or more against Chelsea - a draw would keep both teams below us. Either way, I'll be more interested in this result than I would have been in the same fixture last season.

I'll rephrase then. When we inevitably drop back down to mid table, I am looking forward to not hearing all the top 4 stuff and the big clubs being classed as our rivals.

Why are spurs not a rival?

We were good enough for 6th before spent £35m on Lovern, Osvaldo and Wanyama weren't we? Why should it only be 'maybe 6th' now? Surely we should be aiming for 2nd but settling for 7th. or something.

Fwiw the bookmakers seem to see us as significantly worse than the top six, but significantly better that the bottom 12. Us and Everton are in a class of our own, with them marginally better than us. Seems quite a few of our fans are more negative than the bookies. Odd that.

Like who? Most of the predictions on this thread see us between 4th and 9th. So either better than the bookmakers or roughly the same give or take position or so. So who are these 'quite a few fans' who are more negative then the bookies?

I think the way club has been talking this season - talk of top 2, champions league etc suggests, to me, that NC would have been aiming for 6th without those signings.

There's no way the club will be aiming for 7th at Christmas, why would they? We will be aiming to improve.

The OP asked for position at Christmas, not end of season. Read my post - it starts saying quick look at fixtures trying to be pessimistic - that came up with 6th.

Before the season started, I guessed season finish of 8th / 9th. I wasn't expecting to be above Man U after ⅓ of the season and going into Arsenal game playing for top. I don't know where we will finish, anywhere from champion league spot to 10th has reasonable odds.

It will bore everyone if we go over old ground but briefly, so you understand my view;

End of last season we knew squad would change but couldn't judge unknown signings, therefore I was commenting, hypothetically, on this season using a baseline of existing squad.

There were two separate comments, 1) what NC would be aiming for (6th) 2) how I thought that squad would do (8th/9th).

Just a view, don't mind that yours was different, we will never know.

All we do know is club are being more open minded and don't think its deluded to think we can overtake Everton, or we are light years behind them.

Except that isn't anything like what you said is it.

With the current squad as at 31/3 you said 'I would target 6-9th' and asked for peoples personal views, no mention of what cortese would target, that is where you though we could realistically finish with the squad we had last season. Now with £35m spent and 3 quality players added you're targeting the same LMFAO

As long as we improve on last season, I will be happy. As someone has already stated Christmas last year we were sat in 17th so any thing is an improvement on that. With current form and position and the tough set of fixtures coming up I would be happy with anything above 10th (secretly wishing we stay in top 4 or 5)......just enjoying the season at the moment....

I think over the season we have the best chance we have had for years of finishing in the top 6.

I do not think we can break the top 5 (which I think will be Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man U, Liverpool)as yet, not with our fast tempo pressing game. It has to take a lot out of the players and I think we are 2/3 players short of challenging this.

I also think we will drop a little over the next few games, but then pick up again. I also do not see any reason why we cannot put in a challenge for the 6th spot with Spurs and Everton. It will be tough yes, but it is very possible and even more so with a couple more signings in January.

Agree, but actually think it will be out of us and Everton only in fight for 6th. Have seen nothing from Spurs/Newcastle which makes me think they'll last the distance and below that I see no side that we need to worry about.

9th. There's a gap between 9th (Spurs) and 10th (Swansea) of 5 points, which is some gap. IMO we have a tough run of fixtures and I can't see us picking up many points from them, maybe 5-7. 9th is where I predict we'll be by Christmas, but not cut adrift and ready for another push in the post-Christmas rush. (This prediction of course has the pessimistic Saints fan of old spilling out of me...)

Any better and it would be a cracking achievement.

  • 2 weeks later...
So tight and we could be top or as low as 9th within a week or so!

How good a season is it that we are saying " We could drop to as low as 9th....

Gees last time we were battling in the premiership there generally wasn't too many places to drop down too - bar a lower league.

If we can end up between 10th and 7th I think that's an exceptional season.

Granted people are a bit down on the last few results - but hey overall I've been incredibly impressed with the Saints.
