eurosaint Posted 23 November, 2013 Share Posted 23 November, 2013 Very disappointed that they did not discuss the penalty decision, surely Hansen as a former defender should have commented that shirt pulling ( whilst wrong) should be consistently judged ! Ie. all or nothing ! It happens a dozen times each match but is seldom penalised ! Personally I would outlaw it completely and in this case feel that the BBC should at least have highlighted it ! Hansen: "I'd just like to point out that a penalty was given in this match, and rightly so. But sometimes, in other games, they don't get given. And that's a shame". That would do it. Matthew Le God Posted 23 November, 2013 Share Posted 23 November, 2013 It was a penalty. At the same time Fonte was tugging an Arsenal player, Giroud was tugging Hooiveld's shirt only yards away. Both Saints and Arsenal players were fouling each other near the ball at the same time yet the ref gives it to Arsenal and MOTD completely ignores the penalty. Odd that... Did they make any reference to Hooiveld being fouled at the same time? How can the ref come down on one side when both sides were fouling each other at the same time? I meant in the analysis after the game. They completely ignored it. It was the 2nd game of the show (which gives them more time) and they ignore the 2nd of the two goals in the analysis. badgerx16 Posted 23 November, 2013 Share Posted 23 November, 2013 How can the ref come down on one side when both sides were fouling each other at the same time? Some might claim that favouritism by the ref for a 'big team' at home would explain it.

sandwichsaint Posted 24 November, 2013 Share Posted 24 November, 2013 In hockey this is called a 'simultaneous breach of the rules' and play is restarted with a bully off. In 40 years of playing/coaching/umpiring I've never seen this rule given. In that case football can probably manage without it too and the referee should therefore compute: the relative histories of the two sides, who's at home, the media profile and potential grief he is going to get from the two managers, ditto the meejah, he should also consult the league tables and the relative position of the two sides, and consider the TV companies advertising interests. After he's done all this he should give the decision to the top-4 club, that's how it works. cf Chelsea v West Brom in the last round of games. Agree A got hold of B, fractionally before D got hold of C; B was never in any position to play the ball though A didn't help by looking guilty as feck! Wade Garrett Posted 24 November, 2013 Share Posted 24 November, 2013 I would be happy if more penalties were given for this offence so it disappears. It's crept into the game and should be stamped out. Let's see if Clottenburg gives it against a big side next time he has a chance too...
Hockey_saint Posted 24 November, 2013 Share Posted 24 November, 2013 Did someone say Hockey?... rallyboy Posted 24 November, 2013 Share Posted 24 November, 2013 I would want a foul for all shirtpulling but referees have relaxed their view on it - that looked like a one man crusade to reintroduce it, and normally I would be all for that - if consistent. But I suspect that his decision will stand alone, because I give it three minutes in the next match before we see a similar offence unpunished. If one shirtpull is a penalty then Lambert should have about eight in the next home game. In most games we've had defenders not even looking at the ball from a corner and with both arms wrestling Rickie, Lovren, Fonte - but nothing given. Inconsistency.
