For a player who has had very little competitive football this season I though the man with a square head did very well today against ( looking at the table) the best team we will play this season.

He was comfortable both on the ball and in moving the ball out of defence.

It wasn't a Tuesday so he wasn't expected to score.

Well done Big Man !

I think a lot of the stick he got last year was unfair. Playing on the left side of central defence with Danny Fox next to you is a tough ask. Even Lovren found it difficult this season and that was playing at home to a fairly average side (think it was Swansea).

Credit where credit's due today, he slotted into our toughest fixture so far and didn't do much wrong by the sounds of it.

Totally agree.

Did ok. Nothing brilliant.

Which is surely the point of having cover in the squad. We all know Jos has limitations but he can come in and do a capable job if required. As much as we'd all like to have 4 Lovrens on the books, that just isn't feasible.

When it comes to back-up players I'm more concerned about Kelvin and Fox.

Are we talking about someone who has any particular special needs/issues or is it just a tall, Dutch, healthy-appearing centre-back who has had a trouble-free game??

Disgusting, patronizing attitude going round this topic...but we all know that non-bulldozing, composed CBs fall foul of SWF love-ins, who prefer "do or die" spastics with bricks on their feet instead of boots. You just wait until Lovren stops having such a direct input in our games...

Are we going to open a topic every time a player doesn't do much wrong?

Double standards are really harming any discussion in this forum.

We seem to do one everytime a player plays turd, so definately double standards if we cant give credit where it's due.

I think we generally missed Lovren - he is much more commanding.

Thought Jof did alright - but the team lacked something all round. Lambo wasn't at the game but was that because he was up against a half decent German international? I think it was more to do with the passing and delivery to the front men generally.

Tough coming into the side with very little match practice, but Jos has done it well several times since losing the starting position. As I have always said, he'll do a job when called upon. No doubt some tit will try and blame him for the goals yesterday!

Jos (and Fonte) did their bit in our promotion season (to the Prem.)

They were a good combination, however, I am presently surprised that Fonte has played as well as he has - so far.

I don't discount Jos (as do some others apparantly), but neither he or Fonte are the real thing (in the longer term) without Lovren, who is outstanding IMHO.

I'd like to see another dependable " Lovren-type " so as to give us some choice in case of injury, or loss of form on anyone's part.

Of course we would look at the Academy first, but it's a BIG jump and not everyone might make it as well as Shaw and JWP have.

The point is that many people on here predicted disaster before Saturday's game because Lovren was not in the team. Part of their rationale was that Hooiveld was going to be the weak link in our defence. But it didn't turn out that way, did it? So in some way, this thread serves as a mea culpa for those pre-judging the man.
