Saint-Armstrong Posted 23 November, 2013 Share Posted 23 November, 2013 My MOTM... Victor Wanyama A double from Olivier Giroud, courtesy of a Boruc howler and a penalty kick, which was a soft one. Saints stay third, but Chelsea, City, Spurs and United could all rise above us before the end of the weekend. First time this season that Saints have conceded two goals in the same game. Overall, I thought the display was tidy, but lacked cutting edge. Lambert was poor, the defence was make-shift. Pochettino perhaps got it wrong by not taking Lambert off when he wanted to introduce Osvaldo. Lallana looked like he may create something. Ah well, onto Stamford Bridge! Let the dissection begin... redkeith Posted 23 November, 2013 Share Posted 23 November, 2013 I think Ads must have the bug that downed Lovren or something, as he didn't look injured. No way was that a tactical decision. Squad looks a bit thin now, but could be a last chance for Gaston. Bigger chance for the bed wetters though.
CanadaSaint Posted 23 November, 2013 Share Posted 23 November, 2013 Once Adam went off we had nothing going really. Osvaldo just seems to be on a different wavelength to everyone else. For me it wasn't just the Lallana substitution, when Rickie had been totally anonymous, but moving JWP into the back row, which destroyed our midfield balance and effectiveness. In the end I think MP overreacted and surrendered midfield in favour of a front three that was A) off its game, and B) starved of decent service. Not one of MP's best games. Ohio Saint Posted 23 November, 2013 Share Posted 23 November, 2013 A fair result, even if the goals were a bit bizzaro. Shirt pulling seems to be at the discretion of the ref. Get that one fixed FA!! We didn't pick up the loose balls today like we usually do, and that cost us. No shame in this defeat at all. I'm still happy, just not as happy as I could have been! Injuries are now a serious worry though.

Simples Posted 23 November, 2013 Share Posted 23 November, 2013 Just back from an international break so our build up and prep wasn't as good as it could've been. We were a key player down to begin with and two by half time. A freak goal and a soft, but legal penalty, is the difference. Thought we did well all things considered. Hopefully, a fully fit back four, proper build up and training, and we can give Chelsea something to think about next. Still an amazing season so far. Saint Fan CaM Posted 23 November, 2013 Share Posted 23 November, 2013 Just got to look at the quality in the Arse team and the makeshift defence we had to endure. Having said that, we were beaten by a stupid training ground level error by Boruc and a idiotic shirt pull from a Championship level central defender who needs someone of Lovren class to make him look good. Lambert had a terrible game and J-Rod was not much better. Once Lallana came off we lost any imputus in attack - Osvaldo really does not have a clue. It really goes to show how thin on the ground certain areas of the squad are to maintain a position near the top of the table. Not investing in those areas in January will cost Cortese his dream this season IMO.
iansums Posted 23 November, 2013 Share Posted 23 November, 2013 Disappointed but not disheartened. Losing 2-0 away to the league leaders is no disgrace and we matched them for much of the game. They had that extra bit of quality up front in Giroud whereas SRL had a poor game for us. Lost a lot of threat when Lallana went off, let's hope that him, Shaw and Lovren are back next week. Stepgar Posted 23 November, 2013 Share Posted 23 November, 2013 If we are honest we have been beaten by a far better side today. A goal keeper howler just in time for the Christmas DVD and a penalty that should be given in nearly EVERY game of football but i felt that they could have scored at will. Arsenal were by far the better team when they had the ball, moving it around with purpose and looked like they could score at any moment. We played neatly at times but were second best to the ball all day long. With many stray passes and a very off form RL. AL looked lively but I am guessing that Poch is protecting him for next week as the game was already lost. My MOM went to Jrod because he really drove the ball forward when ever he had the chance, looked like our best chance to score thats for sure. Move on get everyone back to training and for me it does show that we are nowhere near where we THINK we are. Subs made very little impact today and shows that we still lack quality in depth. Boruc does not deserve to hung drawn and quartered he has won us enough points in the past (JUST DONT DO IT AGAIN).

lickierambert Posted 23 November, 2013 Share Posted 23 November, 2013 It happens. Given that I think Arsenal will win the league this is the toughest game of the season. We've got a good group of about 15 but after that the quality is frighteningly scarce. Anyway, on to Chelsea
S-Clarke Posted 23 November, 2013 Share Posted 23 November, 2013 Pretty rubbish 2nd half to be honest. Decent enough in the first half, apart from that practical joke or whatever it was. But we never got going in the 2nd half, pretty boring to be honest. No threat, Lambert had a nightmare. Awful. Jay got quieter as the game went on, and we missed the runs of Shaw and Clyne down the flanks, so we had no width for that 2nd half. Davis didn't have the impact that they wanted him to have, was anonymous. Didn't effect the game at all. Osvaldo struggled to get into it, but he got no service and was playing in front of a very narrow side. Overall, we'll have much better days. It was always going to be a hard match, but it's a shame we didn't make more of a match of it. Looks like we have a few casualties on the back of this too, so could well become a Saturday to forget. Sheaf Saint Posted 23 November, 2013 Share Posted 23 November, 2013 People will moan about strange substitutions, schoolboy errors and questionable refereeing, but the long and short of it is that we went away to a team that are top of the table for a very good reason, and despite the personnel changes we were forced to make we gave a very good account of ourselves, and I take heart from that. Yes it's obvious we lost our attacking momentum when Lallana went of, but there must have been a very good reason why he was substituted which only MP knows at the moment. Lambert was utter crap today. Not involved at all, offside far too often and made no contribution of any note. Of course we forgive him because he's Rickie Lambert, but if that was anybody else putting in such an ineffective display he would be getting ripped to shreds on here. J-Rod had a really good game I thought. Made some great runs when he was able to but just didn't get to see much of the ball in the 2nd half because of the switch in formation following Lallana's withdrawal. Wanyama had a great game and showed why we paid the fee we did for him. Put in some excellent tackles to break up the play and his passing was much improved on his performances earlier in the season. Boruc - oh dear. That will haunt him for the rest of his career, but aside from that and a couple of wayward clearances he did OK.
Minty Posted 23 November, 2013 Share Posted 23 November, 2013 Nothing to get too despondent about today... although the goals were really disappointing, the fact that Arsenal couldn't score against us without us providing the assist is something. We weren't at our best, the injuries clearly didn't help, although credit due to Hooiveld who played well, when many would've expected that change to be something Arsenal might exploit. We want to be near the top of the table though, and so preventable goals can make all the difference. We could've come away with a point had our players not been so silly, and we should use that frustration to motivate us to be better next week. As Adkins would say, don't get too high when we win, don't get low when we lose. Recognise how well we've done overall so far this season, and keep building on it. Bewildered Posted 23 November, 2013 Share Posted 23 November, 2013 Disappointing really, lost to two easily avoidable goals. apart from an early 5 minute spell Arsenal struggled to open us up from open play. Positives: Wanyama was outstanding, JWP adapted well at RB second half, Hooiveld did a decent job. Negatives: Lambert wasn't really in it, Osvaldo did little. Our attacking was pretty poor as soon as Lallana went off, bizarre sub unless he had a knock. Struggled to create after that. Can't say I'm looking forward to Danny Fox's probable reappearance against Chelsea next Sunday.

max_saints Posted 23 November, 2013 Share Posted 23 November, 2013 boruc has been top class all season but not even the happy clappers can excuse him for that. very selfish of him when everyone's working so hard and he just gifts arsenal the goal because of his arrogance/madness/??? Other than that, we were right in it but just did not managed to convert our possession into chances. I think our chances of nicking a point went down drastically after lallana went off (anyone knows what happened here? injury?) wanyama made up for his error in the last game with a beast of a performance in the middle, thought jrod was very good as well with his direct running. big improvement from 6-1? move on and focus on chelsea hopefully with shaw and lovren back. this period is going to be a test of our top 6 credentials. btw wheres gaston?? stknowle Posted 23 November, 2013 Share Posted 23 November, 2013 Deserved to lose on the balance of play but only lost because of one ridiculous feck up (very annoying that, totally unnecessary and inexcusable) and one harshly punished but technically punishable (goes on all the time, every game, yet hardly ever gets punished) bit of defending. That said, didn't create anywhere near enough of a threat up front. OH WELL.

RobM Posted 23 November, 2013 Share Posted 23 November, 2013 Losing to Arsenal isn't great, but I can accept that, they're clearly the level above us. My problem with today is both their goals were gifted to them by stupid individual decisions. We have a lot to be positive about, in this game and the season overall and we certainly weren't terrible today, in fact we held our own well. But to gift the only two goals of the game is not acceptable at any level, against any opposition.
