Southampton will stay out of January transfer market, says Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino has said Southampton will not need to spend in January in order to maintain their push for European football next season because of the number of young players striving to break into his first team.

Saints, whose flourishing youth system has been praised extensively, could go top of the Premier League if they win at Arsenal and Liverpool do not pick up the points at Everton, yet there is a danger that the relative lack of squad depth could see them fall away as the season progresses.

Although Southampton are above Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham, they do not appear to have the resources to maintain that and injuries to key players may expose the thinness of their squad. Pochettino, however, shrugged of those concerns, saying that he will simply promote youngsters into the first team.

"We don't see that as a problem," the Argentinian said. "We have a lot of young players coming from the academy that are pushing really hard. They are making a case for being in the senior team. Players like Sam Gallagher and Harry Reid – very exciting players. We have a lot of young players that guarantee us a very good future in the immediate future. We are covered."

What's been the case here in Southampton is that two good things have come together – the fact that there's been a very good project in place for a long time, in the sense that we always push players through the academy, and a manager that fully believes in young players.

"In that sense Nicola found what he was looking for when he appointed me as manager because of the work I was doing at Espanyol. I had a similar kind of philosophy at Espanyol, where I was fully focused on young players, and that has been transferred to Southampton. People here didn't know me but Nicola did, he was aware of my work for five years at Espanyol."

Edit: apologies, just seen this already posted in the 'January 2014 Transfer' thread. Mods - delete if you don't feel this warrants highlighting in a new thread - cheers :)

I think it's worthy of a separate thread... I tend to assume the Transfer thread is more about potential targets and HCDAJFU's... this is more about the team/squad as a whole, and our club policy.

Agree with Minty and even if he says so I believe that the club would be open to make a deal if it´s a good deal.

As soon as you say that you are looking for players in the market the prize raises so it´s common sense to say that.

Good call IMO, players like Reed, Rowe & Gallagher look promising (Reed in particular) but we won't know if they are really up to it unless they get time in the league.

I like it...I like it a lot. It not only sends a very loud message to the top academicians aiming for the first team but to top talent everywhere. It's a way we can better the top teams in this country and perhaps in Europe too. The clear path from Academy to Premiership Football isn't just a "mission statement"...it's already being implimented.

If nothing else it is a good negotiating tool. If our starting position trying to make a deal if "we have mega bucks and need x player" his price automatically rockets. If we go into talks with a we can take it or leave it position hopefully we will be in a strong position to make a good deal should the opportunity arise.

We can have no plans to move into the market but I am sure there are players whose availability would bring us, and most top clubs, in.

is he actually quoted in saying we wont spend. or does he say we dont have to if we dont want to?

Yeah, dunno he was talking specifically bout the January window, just that he's not too worried bout squad depth.

Journalist - what's happens if you get an injury to a key player? You'd be ****ed. You must want to sign someone? Give us a story!

Potch - estute de mundo accadany eat stongio pornoto del kidz.

Translator - nah, we'd just promote a kid from the academy.

Headline - saints head honcho poncho SHUNS the January transfer window.

He said nothing of the sort. I'm sure they are not going to buy for the sake if it and it's club policy to promote from within, but if there is a good player available that will strengthen the 11 then I'm sure we will be there. I can see anything from 0-2 in and a few out.

With Gaston and Osvaldo off to Italy / Spain wherever and Fonte to Turkey, Lallana to Liverpool, Spiderman to Arsenal, and Shaw having his choice of Man U, Chelsea or Arsenal we may have to splash the cash. ;-)

I am dreading this coming Transfer Window, not so much as to who might leave, but the possible destabalising effect on the team with virtually half the squad being linked elsewhere in the press.

Luckily the shrewd contract extensions this summer when we were relegation candidates means we are in the driving seat should push come to shove and any rumours turn out to be true.

Good luck (not) to any agents / directors etc dealing with Cortez The Killer in January.

I have assumed all our players are on massive Champions League qualification bonuses and none of them will want to leave / Cortese will just break out new deals if there's any interest. If we're in the top 6 there would be no reason to leave anyway. Tomorrow could be a big indicator towards that.

Swap deal for Fox

One can wish!!!

Maybe a swap deal for Ramirez. Can't see him playing for us again as Davis is ahead of him, as is Cork (obv not tomorrow as he is injured).

Surprised not to see Isgrove in the squad this year, or has he?

I'd expect us to be looking to sign players to replace the ones who can only make our bench - but then we did sod all last January transfer window, with the exception of signing Forren and that Pochettino bloke.

Isgrove featured at the start of the season but i'm surprised we haven't seen more of him

Hoping the injury to Lovren will help mopo/NC wake up and smell the coffee. both admitted to naivety during the summer, in my mind they are showing more again here.

My fear is that mopo and NC are beleiving the media hype and are convincing themselves that the youth is all we need. Its not

Worst case Lovren is out for a few months..... Add one or two more to the injury list and we look very very average.

Link on the highlighted?

Lovren is ill, not injured btw.

This. Whats wrong with Lovren ? Could it really be months ?

For all the youth names being bandied about, I dont recognise any as a CB, and besides the best CBs seem to be mature players with no fitness problems (e.g. Wright and Walker in their heyday).

Hooivelt and Yoshida arent up to it, and f**k knows what will happen to Fonte during an extended period of either of them along side him.

Bad timing again again from mopo on the "announcement"

Lovren is Ill and not injured...... Exhausted more like

Good interview. Id rather we bring through our own young players and not sign more imports, even if it costs us a few places in the league for the next few seasons. It will pay dividends in the long run.

Exhausted from what, sitting on the bench in one game and playing 5 minutes in the other one during international break??

For all those backing mopos transfer policy..... Have a look at the Arsenal build up thread

Positive > positive > positive > ahhh lovrens injured > **** > doomed

For all idiots not backing the transfer policy, look at the standings.

Two of our best players this season have been signed.... Not from youth squad

And how many of our starters from the youth squad have been SIGNED?

Posted

I'd expect him to be rethinking that now. We looked very weak in defence without Lovren and with Shaw being injured. Can't see Yoshida wanting to stay in the background for ever so we might need a CB.

Posted

I've heard he got tackled but then carried on to play after receiving treatment, but then went off. God help us if we have to endure the Fox/Hooiveld combo next Sunday :-( we really need some better back up

Posted

Shaw ok by the sounds of it. I think Saints will spend again in Jan. If Gaston is off that money will be spent on a quality central defender to put pressure on the current pair. All in my opinion of course....

Posted

I'm all for giving the youngsters a go, but today showed that our squad is weak. You only have to look at our bench to see that. I do think that our first 11 can and will compete with the best in this league but we need a large investment again to get us into the European places.

We do need better back up. Our first 11 are brilliant. I think Europe is achievable- but not for another one or two years

Yeah great transfer policy to spunk £15m on a second choice keeper, which he would be...

Probably less than £15m, and I doubt he would be second choice if we signed him.
