TopGun Posted 11 December, 2008 Share Posted 11 December, 2008 Got down to £1:€1.12 earlier today and not much better with the dollar at $1.49. Got to wonder whether the £ can stand alone in a long deep recession or whether it's time to jack it in and release some pressure by joining the Eurozone... Got to wonder whether the £ can stand alone in a long deep recession or whether it's time to jack it in and release some pressure by joining the Eurozone... The devaluation of the Pound is a great thing for the UK economy and will certainly help us get out of recession quicker. 1) We export our goods and services more cheaply. 2) Importing goods becomes more expensive so we buy UK stuff. 3)Tourists flock to the UK and shop/spend here as it is so cheap. Worst thing I can think of is the expense of my French ski holiday next year.

Baj Posted 11 December, 2008 Share Posted 11 December, 2008 all of our life savings are in Euros, we've made about £8k in the last year on the exchange rate alone (the money is for down payment on a house in the UK when we eventually buy)

anothersaintinsouthsea Posted 11 December, 2008 Share Posted 11 December, 2008 Only if his pension is £8k a month!!! Poor chap! Seriously, the pound has been overvalued against the Euro and Dollar for best part of five years, it's gone a bit too far the other way but these things are cyclical. They provide exposure and take bookings for for UK independent sector hotels and guest houses. Guess what my press release was about on Monday? It is good for the things Draino mentions but we can't operate in isolation in a global economy forever.

bridge too far Posted 11 December, 2008 Share Posted 11 December, 2008 Not on a public sector pension by any chance? Good lord no  We public sector employees can't afford to buy mansions in Spain. He is a very successful businessman who has taken very early retirement and, in all honesty, probably won't miss the £2K a month. But I'm sure there are lots of people who have retired to Spain on modest pensions who are really suffering. My friend was also telling me that the cost of living has rocketed in Spain - although I think that's Europe-wide however. There are far more people out of work there (proportionately) and the Spanish construction industry has absolutely ground to a halt.

Mole Posted 11 December, 2008 Share Posted 11 December, 2008 I´ve been trawling the exhanges in Tenerife today. The best rate i could find was 1.115 to the pound. Banks were offering between 1.06 and 1.09. In the UK the high street rate is worse, but you can get better online. Check out MONEYSAVINGEXPERT for rates if you´re travelling. Mole Posted 13 December, 2008 Share Posted 13 December, 2008 I seriously think there´s a conspiracy going on. All the negative vibes from Germany etc against the UK economy are intended to weaken the pound and thus make us joining the Euro (ruled by the French and the Germans) harder to prevent. If it was down to me i´d leave the EU and focus more on a commonwealth/North American trading pact.
