dubai_phil Posted 20 November, 2013 Share Posted 20 November, 2013 Played in Gibraltar's first ever proper International last night and held Slovakia to a 0-0 draw http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2510502/Danny-Higginbotham-hails-Gibraltar-draw-great-result.html [h=1]Higginbotham: I've turned out for underdogs before but that's nothing compared to playing for Gibraltar... this draw is one of the best results in my career[/h] Gave 110% for us and doing it again now. Saint_clark Posted 20 November, 2013 Share Posted 20 November, 2013 Would the Channel Islands be allowed to have their own team if Gibraltar are?
kwsaint Posted 20 November, 2013 Share Posted 20 November, 2013 Would the Channel Islands be allowed to have their own team if Gibraltar are? Gibraltar is an over-sea territory whereas the channel islands are crown dependencies. Basically, I believe the channel islands are more controlled by the UK than Gibraltar (which has its own parliament) that it probably wouldn't be allowed. Tony F Posted 20 November, 2013 Share Posted 20 November, 2013 (edited) Of course Guernsey, Jersey and Alderney already have the own teams - they play a three-way cup competition annually. I think the question you are asking is whether they will be allowed to have UEFA status? I am sure the answer is NO because the Bailiwick of Jersey (which has it's own government with some absolute powers but other powers within UK law) is separate from the Bailwick of Guernsey - which includes Alderney and the other islands and also has it's own governor and government). So the phrase "Channel Islands" is a geographic entity not a geo-political one. Edited 20 November, 2013 by Tony F

spain saint Posted 21 November, 2013 Share Posted 21 November, 2013 Guernsey already have their own team that at the moment is playing in about the ninth tier of English football. Matt le tiss is the chairman or something! His brother is very involved also. They have had two promotions in a row as far as i know and were allowed into the league as long as they paid for the away teams cost when going over to the island. They are sponsored by flybe which helps with the travel costs. I am a bit sketchy on the details as i only know because my mate is from Guernsey but they have a website that you can check out!
