JN9 Posted 19 November, 2013 Share Posted 19 November, 2013 anyone else travelling up? Looks like a really good undercard, hoping to make a really decent weekend of it. Hopefully Manchester doesn't dissapoint.
Baldbarbarian Posted 19 November, 2013 Share Posted 19 November, 2013 I missed out on tickets for this one so will be doing a lads boxing night with a few beers & PPV cost split. It should be a good night mate, the venue is decent and some very good bars surround it too. Groves to take the first few rounds, but I expect Froch to walk him down & take him out around 7-9. JN9 Posted 19 November, 2013 Author Share Posted 19 November, 2013 I went up for the Hatton "comeback" fight but were very unorganised. We had to stay in Bolton (couldn't get a hotel in Manchester) and had a mate on crutches which made finding a decent boozer a bit of a nightmare. This time we're staying in Manchester centre and I believe I'll be heading to the Northern Quarter... I hear thats the best place for beers and good times... Turkish Posted 21 November, 2013 Share Posted 21 November, 2013 I do like Carl Froch, good boxer and a decent bloke, unlucky the jokers and frauds in the heavy weight division. He'll win it around the 8th

To be fair, Steve Bunce backed Groves on 5live earlier. The only pundit to do so.

He'll win it around the 8th Well Turkish was only one round out and called it right as usual. Ridiculous stoppage. Listening to Froch I think he knows he got a bit lucky. Groves seems like a decent lad too to be fair. Edited 23 November, 2013 by Turkish

Sky get another £15 a head as well To be fair tokes, he don't do himself any favours in te interviews. Won't hold that against him as I've followed his career and he's a top man and a true fighter, yes he got a bit lucky tonight but over he's career he's been a legend. Groves was superb and Deserved better though, even if Froch would have knocked him out in the end. Edited 24 November, 2013 by Turkish

JN9 Posted 25 November, 2013 Author Share Posted 25 November, 2013 Was a great fight and unbelievable atmosphere, I'm really hoping to get to the rematch (assuming there is one)... Groves fought a hell of a lot better than I thought he could and Froch showed why he is world champion, although he was clearly losing, he foudn a way. The stoppage may have helped Groves get a rematch, but it was a massive shame that he didn't get a chance to either ride out the storm or lose properly. I've heard a few people say that Froch was a bit of a nob in his post fight interview, but it must be hard to be on your PR A game when you've taken as many shots as he had. There were a few boos for Froch after the fight but I think that was because Groves was shown on the big screen going over to shake Froch's hand and seemed to get nothing in response except a "**** off" But still, Groves got his Rocky moment, Froch still has his titles, the fans may well get to see it again. I hope that Groves win the rematch as a nice passing of the torch moment... I wouldn't blame Froch for retiring or taking a different fight. He has nothing to prove to anyone. Baldbarbarian Posted 25 November, 2013 Share Posted 25 November, 2013 It was a massive passing of the torch. I dont believe Froch will take the rematch as he got schooled for 7 rounds prior to the stoppage (which was an awful decision) The hype of the fight perceived Groves to be chinny and I think Foster panicked & jumped in at the first sign of trouble. Froch's comments since the fight have done him no favours, "The referee saved Groves' career". Froch is a good fighter in the ring but a massive tit outside of it. Groves has come out of it all very well, he boxed well behind the jab & his movement was superb. I wouldnt be surprised if Froch retires & Groves goes after Bika or Stieglitz. Wade Garrett Posted 25 November, 2013 Share Posted 25 November, 2013 Sorry, the referees hasty decision to stop the fight, and the ridiculous scores on 2 of the judges cards, tells me that Groves wouldn't have won the fight even if he knocked Froch out. Rotten to the core.

Rotten to the core. I have some sympathy with this position. I watched the fight with a mate and we were both rooting for Froch, but when the referee jumped in my first thought was corruption. Having sobered a little and slept on it, I thought that it surely couldn't have been corrupt. But now, having seen that two of the judges had Froch only behind by 1 going into the 9th, I'm not so sure. What fight are they watching? Excellent fight by Groves, and Froch's lack of any meaningful defence meant he was open to getting tagged at will. If he didn't have the chin he has it'd be all over. Froch should have been handled better by his management in the after fight interview. The only position for him to take was to credit Groves and distance himself from the ref's decision. Instead he talked himself from hero to villain.

bpsaint Posted 25 November, 2013 Share Posted 25 November, 2013 Its all very Lewis vs Klitschko isn't it? If Froch decides to retire he will always be derided for avoiding a deserved rematch to a fight in which he struggled, yet found a way to win. That being said Groves clearly surprised everyone with his quick and sustained offence, not sure that element of surprise would work a second time. Exactly so Turkish. So can that be explained by an inept performance by the judges? Or is there a more sinister explanation?
Turkish Posted 25 November, 2013 Share Posted 25 November, 2013 Exactly so Turkish. So can that be explained by an inept performance by the judges? Or is there a more sinister explanation? Makes you wonder doesn't it. One judge you could say was just them being inept, but two? Everyone could see Froch as best only drew a couple of rounds, I'm a big Froch fan and I'm no expert but even being slightly biased had him at 5 points behind and needing a stoppage going into the 8th which was my prediction for when he'd win it. Yep, I scored it much the same as you. Interesting article here http://m.boxingnewsonline.net/latest/blog/the-scorecards-were-kind-to-carl-froch-before-he-stopped-george-groves It shows that an average of 46 journalists' score cards had Groves ahead by 5 at 78-73. And no journalist had Froch ahead. By the end of the fight I felt pretty short changed. The only winners were the Hearns and Sky. Not inclined to pay for the rematch.
