SO16_Saint Posted 18 November, 2013 Share Posted 18 November, 2013 I've just turned on our central hearing his weekend for the first time this winter. I'd forgotten how annoying it was when, for the first 5-10 minutes, there is a knocking/tapping sound that wakes me up every time. Anyone know what this is, and how I can stop it? Noodles34 Posted 18 November, 2013 Share Posted 18 November, 2013 Pump probably. Give it a whack.
Halo Stickman Posted 18 November, 2013 Share Posted 18 November, 2013 You may have air in the system; have you tried bleeding the radiators?
Doctoroncall Posted 18 November, 2013 Share Posted 18 November, 2013 Air or expansion with system heating up usually. I had a magnatec fitted (cost £120) a few years ago and that solved the problem for me as it wasn't the above.
Saint Mikey Posted 18 November, 2013 Share Posted 18 November, 2013 I have the same problem. Have blead all the radiators. How difficult is it to bleed the tank?
SO16_Saint Posted 18 November, 2013 Author Share Posted 18 November, 2013 Bled the radiators and entire system down recently but still no good. Think it may need pipes sorting but too much effort to pull up carpets. Annoying being woken up at 6.30 every day though! ringwood Posted 18 November, 2013 Share Posted 18 November, 2013 Iits not AIR its GAS, formed by corrosion in the system the same corrosion and deposits that block the pump as sludge, best be looking at the corrosion inhibitor in the system before it causes more expensive problems than just a noise. Sent from my GT-N5110 using Tapatalk If for some reason the noise is being caused by vibrating pipes knocking against something, there’s a chance that sooner or later one of the pipe joints will crack and you’re end up – as I did a few months ago – with water pouring through your ceiling. Tractor_Saint Posted 18 November, 2013 Share Posted 18 November, 2013 Annoying being woken up at 6.30 every day though! I've got the fix, I changed the timer so it came on at 7:30 - result Seriously, there must be an airblock somewhere for it to make that noise. Get your friendly plumber in for £60 call out to fix it for you. You've done all I would have, complete drain of the system and then bleed the rads should have fixed it. If not, air is getting into the system somehow causing the knocking sound. Alternative, you need a priest as you've got spiritual beings causing it. hutch Posted 19 November, 2013 Share Posted 19 November, 2013 If it only happens for a few minutes when the system first comes on, then stops, then it's probably not trapped air, but thermal expansion. Put a few more brackets on the pipes, particularly each side of bends.
Grim Reaper Posted 19 November, 2013 Share Posted 19 November, 2013 I'm a heating engineer and Hutch is quite right, unfortunately it is caused by a bad installation from when the heating was fitted. An installer should fit something called hair felt or something similar under the pipes where they pass over or through a wooden joist or where they come into contact with wood, because pipework expands and contracts as it heats and cools you get a ticking noise if this hasn't been done properly. Unfortunately the only cure is to left the offending piece of flooring and insulate as a above or learn to live with it.
