stevegrant Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 Sounds like they've been teeing off for most of the morning, 83 runs in 65 minutes. Should get a few overs at their openers before lunch at this rate.
Minty Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 443 the lead. Plenty of time to now skittle them out. Famous last words... (Essex should wrap up their win just after lunch so a little bit of pressure... how many points will they get?)
Bucks Saint Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 And declared 9 down! 443 lead then. Allenby took 6 wickets, over to you Hants!
Minty Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 Answer my own question... maximum of 24. Just need to get on and win, don't we?
Lets B Avenue Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 443 the lead. Plenty of time to now skittle them out. Famous last words... (Essex should wrap up their win just after lunch so a little bit of pressure... how many points will they get?) If they win, so must we. Win and we also win the Division.
stevegrant Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 (Essex should wrap up their win just after lunch so a little bit of pressure... how many points will they get?) Essex will get 22 points in total for their win (16 for the win, 3 bowling points, 3 batting points - they'd only got past the 300-run mark after 110 overs), which puts them on 229. We'll also be on 229 if we somehow don't manage to bowl Glamorgan out in 5 and a bit sessions, but Essex would finish above us with more wins. Assuming we DO bowl Glamorgan out, we will move onto 240, ahead of Worcestershire who will end on 237.

Minty Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 There was me saying to put them in before lunch... at this rate they might be OUT before lunch!
Weston Saint Posted 25 September, 2014 Author Posted 25 September, 2014 Another for Tommo straight after lunch
Viking Warrior Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 Be grat if we cna become Champions, Come on Hants , victory is in sight
Minty Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 5 for Tommo now! He's gonna win promotion all on his own. Off to a meeting until 1530 now... fully expect us to be promoted by the time I come out!
Weston Saint Posted 25 September, 2014 Author Posted 25 September, 2014 I felt Tommo had lost his form after Abbott left and put the pressure back on him. 6 wickets in the second innings so far has blown that out of the waters
stevegrant Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 Essex have beaten Worcestershire by an innings and 91 runs. 4 wickets from the title
Weston Saint Posted 25 September, 2014 Author Posted 25 September, 2014 Back to where we belong. Well done Jimmy Adams and the team. This was always our main goal from the start of the season. Always in our hands and we played it out to perfection in the last few games.
Leicestersaint Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 Well done Hampshire - a great team effort. Looking forward to next season already!!

rallyboy Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 Funny how one can switch from supporting Worcester to Essex mid-innings! It worked for us. Aaaaaampshire!
Dark Munster Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 Dear Worcestershire, Thank you for your heroic efforts against Essex, and commiserations for not quite succeeding. We look forward to meeting you in the first division next year. Love, Hampshire xxxx P.S.
badgerx16 Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 I'm hoping for a Lancy miracle against Middx now.
Minty Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 Commiserations to @EssexCricket Their tally of 229 points is the most ever gained by a side who have not been promoted Interesting stat.
stevegrant Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 Interesting stat. Losing out to a team who only finished where they did because of a bowler using an illegal action for 11 games.
St Lej Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 Interesting stat. Essex deserved to go up instead of Worcs in my opinion. With worcs you had a guy single handed my winning them games on his own time and again, then his action was proven to be illegal. Then you had the subsequent slump in their form the minute he left, getting beaten easily on a number of occasions. Add to that the fact it was an open secret that a lot of their fans wanted them to roll over and allow Essex to win and go up with them , resulting in a mass promotion love in and back-slapping party afterwards. Well luckily hants hadn't read the script, so thanks for the title Worcs ;-)
Halo Stickman Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 Brilliant performance by Hampshire! Absolutely delighted. Great time to be a Saints and Hampshire fan! Fantastic to see Tommo getting six wickets to finish as our leading wicket-taker yet again. Excellent captaincy by Adams - I never doubted that decision not to enforce the follow-on for a single moment Some fine team performances and consistently solid individual performances this year, especially amongst the batsmen. Hampshire 2014 Div 2 Batting averages: Vince 61 Smith 52 Ervine 45 Adams 43 Carberry 42 Hampshire 2014 Div 2 Bowling Averages: Wood 15 wkts at 17 Abbot 36 wkts at 20 Tomlinson 47 wkts at 26 Briggs 27 wkts at 26 Coles 41 wkts at 28 Dawson 17 wkts at 31 Ervine 19 wkts at 36
Viking Warrior Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 well done ammpshire, just back in the office to see how we got on. I will have few beers tonight
Berkshire Saint Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 Brilliant result and a well deserved promotion. I think the batting is more than capable for Division One but the bowling needs to be strengthened a bit. Would be useful to have Abbott back again next season if he's available.
Window Cleaner Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 Good job done and the Div 2 title to boot.....
Leicestersaint Posted 25 September, 2014 Posted 25 September, 2014 Amidst all the euphoria I just wonder what will happen to Danny Briggs.
John B Posted 26 September, 2014 Posted 26 September, 2014 Excellent season apart from the Royal London Cup difficult for me to come up with a player of the season with so many to chose from but I think I am going for Sean Ervine for his two recent centuries and his general all round ability but equally I could have gone for Jimmy Adams Will Smith James Vince Kyle Abbott or James Tomlinson. Really glad to have overtaken Worcestershire who we beat comprehensively at Portsmouth in 1974 only for them to beat us to the Championship as I think we were unable to play our last five days of cricket due to bad weather and did not gain any bonus points. For the future I think we need a really good number three batsmen another seamer possibly Kyle Abbott not sure what has happened to Danny Briggs and who to have as wicket keeper

I left school that year and was waiting to start my apprenticeship so had plenty of time of my hands. My mate and I travelled over to the United Services ground from the Island every day for ‘Portsmouth Week’ – IIRC Hants played Warwickshire in the other fixture. Gordon Greenidge and Barry Richards opening the batting and Andy Roberts bowling – happy days! As for player of the season, like you say, there are quite a few candidates, but I think I’d be tempted to it to Smith for his all-round performance in all competitions.
Benali Saint Posted 26 September, 2014 Posted 26 September, 2014 Really happy that Hampshire got promoted, the fact they did it as champions is a bonus
Minty Posted 29 September, 2014 Posted 29 September, 2014 Bates, Braithwaite and Balcombe all left Hampshire today... http://www.ageasbowl.com/news/Balcombe-Joins-Surrey-Bates-Brathwaite-Leave-Hampshire
stevegrant Posted 29 September, 2014 Posted 29 September, 2014 No great surprise with any of those departures, I assume Alsop will be the backup keeper next year. Very surprised that Surrey have given Balcombe a deal, though, they're not exactly short of bowlers already.
Bucks Saint Posted 29 September, 2014 Posted 29 September, 2014 Very surprised that Surrey have given Balcombe a deal, though, they're not exactly short of bowlers already. Surrey have been getting itchy feet TBF, as it has been too long for their liking since they signed someone from Hants who hardly played
Halo Stickman Posted 29 September, 2014 Posted 29 September, 2014 Inevitable but still sad to see Balcs and Bates go – the latter played a big part in providing one of my most exciting ever cricket moments: the last ball victory over Warwickshire at Lord’s in 2012. Brilliant keeper.
