England vs Chile Match Thread

Lallana looked OK, worth another go at least, J-Rod not so much, but he's normally playing in a side that allows the attacking players freedom of position when in possession.

Let's be honest though, not one England player has played well at all tonight and certain players should be pleased that they have already guaranteed places in the squad.

To get his confidence and belief he belongs there, the Rodriguez we saw in March was a totally different player to the one that played against Man City on the opening day.

Wouldn't argue with that; he was pretty much unplayable for about a month. He's clearly got talent; no doubt about that. Just nowhere near consistent enough IMO. **** it; 2-0.

Well it's a steep learning curve for England. Sadly though with lazy journalism rife it may be the debutants that get the blame, the two Saints lads and Forster. I hope not, Lallana looked OK from what I saw of him.

Germany will be a much harder test. I would LOVE to see England's first XI but with the Saints lads playing, but of course that won't happen. I don't rate Milner, especially not in that midfield role he was playing tonight. He "does a job" but that's about it.

Thought Lallana did OK, showed good touches, and may get another go. Jay R didn't really get into the game.

Defence was shocking. Clyne and Shaw are better than both the full backs on show tonight. Joe Hart may be having a wobble but Forster's distribution is terrible.

Am I alone in thinking Lallana was really good?

Lallana, Milner, Cahill and Rooney. I'd start those 4 against Germany.

It's weird, this was a match where it was obvious to see how good Rooney is and how he's in a class of his own in the England team, bar perhaps Gerarrd. Add Gerrard to the 4 above and that'd be quite nice.

Erm two and numerous dickheads on Twitter.
Erm one. You stated :"****ing pathetic anyone writing the lad's international career off at the age of 24"

and found one quote on here to back thatt up. More fool you for falling back on the idiocy/lunacy of twitter to try to populate the Straw XI team on here.

Bright first half - thought he was better on the right than the left in part coz Johnson provided more support than Baines. The lack of support on the left didn't help Jrod either -quite apart from his own performance.

Simon Peach, Journo said after 45mins his Intl career would be over if he didnt do more second half...

My two non-saints supporting mates both thought Lallana was our best player. Unfortunately, I think that's the last we'll see of Rodriguez for a while. I expect Adam and Rickie (if fit) to come off the bench on Tuesday.

Non-Saints stuff: There's a reason Hart is number 1, there's a reason Cole has more caps than Baines, and there's a reason Jones doesn't play centre back much.

England two steps behind in the football evolutionary scale: 4-4-2

Lallana didn't do his squad chances any harm at all, one of the better players tonight. JRod couldn't really get in the game but didn't do anything bad. Lampard, Milner and Wilshire were dreadful in the first half. Once the second half subs came on England lost all shape and never looked like getting back in it.

Most worrying thing for me was that England didn't know whether to press or drop off and sometimes did both at the same time with predictable consequences. You wonder how well they prepared given that Chile are well known for their approach.

I can't help thinking Adam and J-rod were saying to themselves "****ing hell can't wait to get back to a team that can actually play" .

England couldn't pass or hold on to the ball to save their lives. It must be quite hard to shine when you come from a team that press as a group, control the game for long periods and can pass a ball to playing for England....

I'm starting to think I'd rather our players weren't near the England squad which probably doesn't help their game at all

I think Adam might get another shot but I doubt Jrod will get another go (though I was surprised he was called up in the first place if I'm honest)

And where, in my original post, did I say "on here"

Yes, I didn't realise I should have been perusing the whole of the internet when you said that. :toppa: God forbid you should have to clarify you meant what you had seen on twitter and christ knows where else. My mistake. :toppa:

Ah, I missed his post on here about that. :toppa:

For a Saints fan, I personally find Peach tries to overcompensate and ends up being rather harsh.

Clearly if JR continues to develop as he has been then he will get more caps, regardless of tonight. Absolute folly to suggest an Intl career is decided on 45mins, especially when you have troubled better defences than Chile's in the league.

we do it to the likes of cleverly

No, we are just constantly baffled at how he gets regularly selected for England despite being poor. Imagine JRod putting in regular performances like he did tonight and still getting picked. I would imagine most England fans would be rightly frustrated.

IMO JRod deserves another chance but Germany will be too much for him and will do his chances more harm than good. Maybe a 2nd half sub appearance. Lallana had an average game but was no worse than anyone else on the pitch. If anything I'm reminded of Beattie's debut, where he had the misfortune to start in an embarrassing display against Australia.

It's difficult to watch the game except with a Saints focus. The reality is that not one England player had a good game. They all found it very difficult. I thought Adam had more good touches than most. Probably the best of the new boys. Even Townsend, who was supposed to be our great new discovery, did nothing of note when he came on.

J-Rod, sadly, never got going. He looked nervous in the tunnel. It didn't get any better for him.

It's a really tough call to step up to international level. To do it in such a disjointed team must be heartbreaking.

I thought Lallana was one of our better players; did his chances no harm at all. Certainly seems more suited to international football than Rodriguez at the moment; he's just so versatile, happy to drift in from the wing or stay wide and his footwork is phenomenal. Not sure whether he will ultimately make it to the WC but he'd be a great option to have in the squad.

unfortunately for jay rod i dont think he is a particularly confident person and as such he takes time to get in to his groove,. when he first joined saints it took a fair few games before we started to see the real jay rod.

tonight he looked like the player we first saw in a saints shirt and he would definately need a few games at this levl to find his feet.

i just hope it doesnt affect his comfidene on his return to the saints side.

although it doesnt help when england were outclassed and out played by a strong side.

Jrod's performance reminded of me of how he started with us, dumped out on the left, the game bypassing him.

Its only when we allowed him to play more centrally and cut outside if necessary that we started to see more from him.

Jay very nervous, still not a first team choice for Saints either.

A one cap wonder I fear.

Adam Lallana, brilliant, always looking for the ball, worked hard.

He's on the plane for me.

Take Luke, Nath and James WP AS well.

Until England move to the sort of pressing game we play (as do Chile and Spain) we'll be slow, ponderous and rely on players like Townsend and Walcott to inject pace. We won't make it out of the group next summer followed by another round do soul searching and blaming people before the next prem season starts and everyone forgets about it again

Rooney and Lallana play better when given a free role. Seems teams like Spain half the team have a free role, and or rather they play a fluid and dynamic system whereby every player knows their role in any given situation. It's shame England never seem to successfully become this sort of team despite the hype.

I feared England would play like that - we are so predictable. Makes you glad Saints are brave enough to play the high press and until England adopt the same tactic we'll remain a ponderous clumsy side. Felt sorry for Adam - you could see he was dying to press their backs but he was fully aware that if he did there was simply no back-up coming from midfield. He did lots of good things but the system didn't suit him and J Rod even less. Woy has got to change England's timid, negative style of play and grow a pair. Introduce the high press and put the fear of God up teams and we just might see a marked improvement - we have the players to operate this system but sadly nothing ever changes. If you keep doing the same things that have only brought failure what is the point of it all?
