Uncool underdog or leading light?

Someone mentioned on the telegraph thread that they prefer to be the "uncool underdog".

With all the recent (well deserved) praise in various publications from across the world, which paint the picture of Southampton FC being a shinning example of all that is right with the game, the "uncool underdog" and "little old Southampton" tags are starting to rub off.

So, which do you prefer? Do (did!) you like being the underdog, or do you prefer being a fan of a club that is a leading light in football?

I think we're getting a bit carried away with all the stories in the press here. England will lose against Chile and Germany, Southampton will drop a few positions in the table, we'll lose 2 or 3 of our best players in January and everyone can go back to what they love, which is moaning about how **** we've played every week.

Whilst I don't think it will be quite that extreme, I do agree there will be a 'correction', probably this side of Christmas, and we can safely go back to being last on motd and complaining about the media anti saints agenda

Yes but the difference here, I think, is Cortese?

He promised Premier League football within 5 years and delivered. He has now said European football is his target.

As far as I can see, he has achieved almost everything he has said he will.. Time for Saints in Europe and a top 6 team?

I wonder if WBA answered all these questions last season? Might be able to link into or simply borrow some of there threads?

Swanseas mongboard might be worth a gander too. I'm sure they are all still moaning about how winning the league cup last season cost them champions league football.

Went on the Swansea forum last night - the forum is riddled with newspaper and magazine articles from early 2013

Weird coincidence(?) but a few familiar faces on there too - posters called Swans Garrett, Swan_Charlie, Batswan, Swan Mikey, hyperswandriac + swans_clark

All equally hilarious as our gang

Nope there were no articles like this, WBA for one thing had fallen away by this point.

EDIT; Ok, not fallen away but they certainly weren't playing football as well as us with as many strong English players.

I had a look the other day and the wierdest poster of all was one called The_Vetch_Days. Seemed like he was claiming to be some war hero bet everyone took the p*ss out of him for really being a chef.

They probably haven't got over that miserable "hollow" feeling they had from winning a major trophy.

Taken a look at the Stoke forum? How they dealt with the pressure and expectations of being a mongboard-appointed saviours of football.

Absolutely no idea what this post is supposed to mean, Strawlock.

Stoke flying high, running a tight ship while we're larging it on crack.

When you put it like this, who wouldn't want to be a bit more like Stoke, CB Fried? :mcinnes:

Having your own team in the spotlight only highlights how thinly spread football content is across tens of thousands of platforms. It's nice to have your team seriously discussed and analysed (e.g. MNF) but I think I'd rather be ignored than read 'you've got your Walcotts, your Bales' ever again.

Leading Light, every time. Enjoy it while it is there....

I will happily put up with Glazgee_Saint posting his bet slip for Saints to be Premier League champions at 10,000/1 having been crowned the winners the weekend after Easter!! Southampton then go to Brazil and win the World Cup for England. Hurrah!!

No but I noticed a Swan-kish and a Barry Swachez posting on every single thread...

There was some bloke on there call Ottawaswan who was quite literally obsessed with them and namechecking S****ish and Barry Swanchez even when they were nothing to do with the thread. It was odd.

I feel dirty after I have been on this site for too long. Seems a few can't get enough and regularly go to forums of other clubs. What is the matter with you? Is it an addiction to wanting to find out what other people of no consequence think? Although confess I did follow a link to Stoke the other day but hope I am not on a slippery slope

It is early days and we are still seen by many as the under dog.

Mind you, carry on like this and Saints supporters may one day be confused with being 'glory hunters'.

I was once accused of being a glory hunting Saints fan. It was just after we had bought Keegan and I met some Israelis on holiday.

Glory hunting ! Saints ??? If only .....

I've started watching the Ukrainian streams cos I'm sick of some yank or BT Sport guy prattling on about the famous academy, Walcott, Bale, Ox etc every bloody 10 minutes.
