Dr Who? Posted 14 November, 2013 Share Posted 14 November, 2013 Sod this, Hoddle was an excellent manager for us. No matter what you say about him. Was it not 6 clean sheets in a row or something? No matter who the teams we are playing, I do not think we have managed a run like that in any league, let alone in the top flight. Now we have surpassed what he achieved though. Most Saints fans are bitter that he walked out, but I wanted him back for the second coming. He has been out of management far to long now to return, he would be a huge punt for someone. Saying this one of my all time favourite games was beating Spurs at the lane and pretty much sealing his fate, for the sack! Good times with him in charge and against him with karma! kwsaint Posted 14 November, 2013 Share Posted 14 November, 2013 As a coach, Hoddle was as good as anyone. His organisation of the England team v Argentina in 98 after Beckham was sent off was extraordinary. The way he got Saints playing in the year that he was with us was excellent. Beattie as a central striker, with two wide men. Not that different in formation from how most teams play now. As a man-manager he was a disaster. When he left Saints, all he needed to be was honest, and explain why he wanted to go to Spurs. Instead he was underhand and dishonest. There were stories coming out of the Saints how he was upsetting everyone, and his treatment of MLT is well known. He is arrogant and unbelievably self-unaware. I was among those who did not want him back in 2003.
Cascadia Saint Posted 15 November, 2013 Share Posted 15 November, 2013 I can't believe I just read that. I watched MLT score that hat-trick in the pub behind the dell, clutching the captains armband in his hand as he leathered the second goal. So did Hoddle. Not from the pub, obviously. What a moron. Hockey_saint Posted 15 November, 2013 Share Posted 15 November, 2013 Irony being that Hoddle was "discovered" as a player by none other than Martin Chivers.
alpine_saint Posted 15 November, 2013 Share Posted 15 November, 2013 I have always felt that MLT would have stayed at the top of his game for us for maybe 2 or 3 years more if Hoddle hadnt crushed his England aspirations in such a cynical manner. I think Matt was a bit tougher than that.

Cascadia Saint Posted 17 November, 2013 Share Posted 17 November, 2013 I have always felt that MLT would have stayed at the top of his game for us for maybe 2 or 3 years more if Hoddle hadnt crushed his England aspirations in such a cynical manner. I know injuries played their part, but it was a pretty sharp drop after 1998 for sure.
