angelman Posted 12 November, 2013 Posted 12 November, 2013 Now that it appears that getting MP was a bit of a master stroke, I got wondering who advised NC to employ him, or is this all NC's work?
angelman Posted 13 November, 2013 Author Posted 13 November, 2013 Mourinho told him to take the job, but no word of whether he told NC to give it to him.
dubai_phil Posted 13 November, 2013 Posted 13 November, 2013 Jose Mourinho? Which was widely reported at the time. Also, at the time we were i) seriously Gruntled about NA being fired ii) wondering what the club were smoking with al the pronouncements about Challenging for Europe, Stadium Expansion etc etc But one question that was never asked at the time was... What the hell was NC doing talking to Jose in the first place? I know we now see things in a different light, but surely... No, he couldn't have been thinking he could bring him here... could he?... Nah don't even TRY and have that train of thought when sober Phil. But could be a good question if anyone from here gets an invite to another of those dinners.....
jasonb Posted 13 November, 2013 Posted 13 November, 2013 I thought it was MP who spoke to Mourinho after being offered the job by Saints?? Could be totally wrong though, just the way I remember it.
Charlie Wayman Posted 13 November, 2013 Posted 13 November, 2013 What really stands out is that Nicola Cortese has plucked two unknown managers out of nowhere and both have been a success and has also fired two manager's who were doing well enough but not brilliantly to make way for them. This is one shrewd operator and we need to pray he stays with Saints and doesn't get whipped off to a top European club who will have their envious eyes on both Cortese and Pochettino. It is losing either of them that we should really fear rather than one or two of our players
Glasgow_Saint Posted 13 November, 2013 Posted 13 November, 2013 We did and they signed Whittingham! V.good
Badger Posted 13 November, 2013 Posted 13 November, 2013 I thought I read sometime after MP arrived, that his name was first brought to NC's attention by an agent whilst talking on player transfers (possibly the Ramirez deal). I was never quite convinced by the "recommended by Jose" line . It seemed a bit too convenient, and borrowed from the "recommended by Sir Alex/ Don Revie * ..." line. *which Lawrie was apparently.

Atkins was getting praise in England and Pochettino had received much praise for his initial success at Espanyol. Perhaps you just mean that you hadn't heard of them? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
ART Posted 16 November, 2013 Posted 16 November, 2013 In pre-season before Pochettino joined Saints, Les Reed and Saints scouts took a number of trips to Barcelona, springing rumors we were about to sign players from Espanyol and Barcelona. I believe it was the Echo who said Cortese wanted Saints to be modeled on Barcelona and this was also discussed as being why they were there. I'm convinced it was Reed who would have sized up Pochettino as a potential Saints manager.
