Lighthouse Posted 31 January, 2014 Share Posted 31 January, 2014 At the start of the season we saw the need to purchase a marquee CF, now it seems we do not have that same requirement despite the fact that we are not putting away chances and Lambert is injured. It's fairly obvious that the right player was not available at the right price. Don't forget we haven't sold Osvaldo and we probably received very little in the way of up front loan fees. As such, we probably don't have another £15m lying around spare we can chuck at another centre forward. Clearly those running the club have decided it's better to make do with what we've got, rather than paying the asking price for any strikers who we have probably been looking at. This isn't Championship Manager.
KelvinsRightGlove Posted 31 January, 2014 Share Posted 31 January, 2014 I don't get the Townsend hype personally. My spurs mate who obviously sees more of him than me doesn't rate him at all either. For the sake of fairness, one of the IT guys at work is a spurs fan and thinks he's great. So, god knows. Don't think he's bad, just the latest hype player. How on earth losing fox, martin and other fringe players is "weakening" our squad is beyond me. The only loss that weakened the squad was Osvaldo and as he was suspended for banjoing a loyal and well liked first 11 player, I don't see how anyone can argue with getting rid of him. Perhaps there was nobody available that the club wanted to replace him with. One thing for sure that had MP desperately wanted a signing and it was refused the papers would have had a sniff. Hmmmm But if we're honest, it's the first transfer window since the takeover whereby we're in a position of nothingness. All the other windows we've either been chasing promotion or trying to move away from relegation, so there's been a stronger need. And anyway, last years signing didn't really happen if we're honest. I really dont know if it means anything, I assume we will have to wait and see. FWIW we were working on deals apparantly so dont really no what happened. As for the nothingness, we can still drop down the table and could still grab a european place, plus the FA Cup so the seasons not over. DuncanRG Posted 31 January, 2014 Share Posted 31 January, 2014 I agree that the only real loss to the squad has been Osvaldo - in playing terms, anyway. Fox will be missed on a personal level by many I'm sure. What disappoints me is that we haven't replaced Osvaldo, as it does leave us short up front. We had time to prepare something and had at least one target (striker or otherwise), but for some reason nothing happened. It's not the end of the world - it might even prove to be very wise if Sam Gallagher takes his chance and goes on to perform in the Premier League - but it is disappointing. Matthew Le Tissier Posted 1 February, 2014 Share Posted 1 February, 2014 For once I actually agree with everything you said. However I feel that if we lost any key players from injury then its very likely we will end up finishing 13th or 14th ish. Its all about strength in depth and you can't just rely on 11 or 12 good players unfortunately . Young Sam has potential we can all see that . And I'm pleased he's getting a chance , however he should be eased in slowly and not being realied on at such a going age. He will be class but its best not to run before you can walk. Unless of course your a stand out player like bale, shaw or Walcott etc. he's not in that class (at the moment) so needs to be well managed as he does have the potential . People should also concentrate on the players we haven't sold rather than who we haven't brought. We have 8 players who in my opinion could have been big targets for top 3/4 clubs and they are still here. Weather that's for business or playing reasons is another matter! No injuries 7th Injuries 14th Strength In depth(key) QUOTE=Smirking_Saint;1873374]We needed a CB and we tried to get one in, noone knew he just couldnt hack it out of Norway. James Posted 1 February, 2014 Share Posted 1 February, 2014 Very disappointed. People say we aren't any weaker, but we are. Osvaldo may well be a nutter but he is a class above an 18 year old with 60 minutes of premier league experience. I know we will probably finish around 9th/10th and will probably get knocked out of the cup spectacularly by Sunderland but this is a season where I had hoped we would push on/show some ambition. To me, loaning out our record signing and relying on an 18 year old with no prem goals to his name and only 60 minutes of football in the league does not seem a statement of intent. We should and probably could have signed a stop gap on loan to cover rickie and the fact we haven't tells me we've given up on the season and are happy to attempt to consolidate. If Rickie were out for the rest of the season from tomorrow we'd have either SG or Guly as our main striker for the rest of the season....JRod cannot play through the middle only from the left. I hope SG comes good and I eat my words but that 60 minutes against arsenal doesn't mean I'd potentially entrust half a season to the lad, that wouldn't be fair to him or us in terms of his development. I wonder whether this is what MP actually wanted or what KL told him he had to work with. I hope the former or it'll be an awfully long summer. Matthew Le Tissier Posted 1 February, 2014 Share Posted 1 February, 2014 I also must add. I think lambert is still a class player and would hate to see him go as he offers us that something different. Sadly I just don't think he fits into the way poch wants to play! But he's defiantly worth having here for when we need to mix it up. You need to be able adapt your game and play in different ways to suit your opponents in the premier league and IMO lamberts a key part of that. Lambert is not past it by a long way marks words. He's just been asked to change his game for the team slightly. Yes this results in less goals but IDE have rather have him here than not.

Matthew Le Tissier Posted 1 February, 2014 Share Posted 1 February, 2014 Anyone who understands the game will know players have rough patches . Specialy strikers. That aside that's not what rickie is just about now. Its not the same as league 1 or championship . When on form his hold up play , flick ons and bringing others into play, passing and vision, assists , dead balls , defending from set pieces are all big assets. He will pick up goals along the way to for sure. But less now than before as we play a different way and he drops much deaper and plays others into the game. I'm sure any team that wanted to play with a target man would want rickie that's for sure. It's possible Osvaldo's value will be enhanced by association with Juventus (as well as with the WC). If Juventus excercises it's option Saints make a reported £3m plus. If not, Saints may still benefit from the his association with Italy's premier club. That would be some consolation for having signed him. There is an opportunity cost of course to having £12.5m tied up on a flop, which money could have been spent on someone better.

This really, its laughable the defence he gets when you dare to question him, no doubting what he has achieved and what he has done for us but realistically he doesnt fit for us upfront. We need someone willing to close down from the front, to be able to turn and run if required making movements in and around the oppo back four. Rickie doesnt really offer that. Yes he is a top target man but once he brings players in we then lose him as that goalscorer we need. Again the chances are he can do a job in one of the attacking three positions but not as our lone striker option. We needed a replacement to ossie and didnt get it
