January 2014 Transfer news & rumours

Lots of Wolves fans I know say they were relegated because all the players they had were of a similar quality. Lots of players, but very few outstanding (if any).

I would love to sign a striker, BUT only if he is better than what we have! Therefore I expect us not to sign anyone until the summer.

Not the end of the world, but would that be only 3 players we signed all season? Not very many players, but all Internationals.

Spot on,

It was also the situation we got ourselves in under Lowe. If he had £10mil to spend , he'd have spent it on 4 players. We have seen that identifying the right target and then going big on them strengthens the team. Lovren & Victor walked straight in and not only strengthen the 11, but the bench. Our back up became Cork & Yoshida, under Lowe we'd have bought 4 players at the same level as Cork & Yoshida. The gamble of Osvaldo didn't work, but on paper he's an Italian international that should have strengthened the side.

That more or less what happened when we were relegated from the prem in 2005

We're currently one more injury away from Guly playing 90min with no backup apart from Isgrove. Neither of which have had much premier league experience.

you can't stock pile strikers in case three get injured. If you have that sort of bad luck then you just have to accept it and play Guly up there or Jrod. No biggy. What do you do with this signing when Lambert gets fit, especially if Gallagher plays well in the mean time?

Gallagher like for like cover for lambert but we currently don't have like for like cover for jrod and lallana. Guly and jwp not going to have much impact if truth be told.

Confirmed SWF ITK K,Billy's supersound on the VMAN thread:

no one is comming in so don't spend all day smashing the F5 on your keyboards, go out and live your lives. We have cleared the decks and have money in the bank ready to go in the summer when prices are not ott and players are more willing to leave . COYRS

now you are talking. A left and a right sided attacker, or in the hole type player would be a good idea, especially if Ramirez is going to be out for a while.

b) we survived with Jos in the team last season and he'll be better without fox and gazzaniga.

spot on. Jos played very last season once the side as a whole found its feet. He's not Lovren, the side will be weaker, but no weaker than if Lallana gets injured and Ward Prowse or Guly is our attacking midfielder option. That's football.

Erm, the same as we did with Osvaldo: choose the best team and enjoy the competition for places.

We absolutely do need another striker in the summer and I'm sure we'd like one now, it just doesn't seem like the right man's available.

Interesting anecdote from Kevin Kilbane on BBC Sport transfer day page:

I've moved twice on deadline day. The first time, I moved from Sunderland to Everton it was around the first few transfer windows. There was an offer for me from Southampton a month or two before. I thought I was going to move, but it didn't happen. Then, as the deadline day loomed, I had a call saying I was going to be going on loan to Everton. Mick McCarthy, the Sunderland manager, didn't want it going ahead - it was a permanent deal or nothing. That deal was on and off probably six or seven times that day and I didn't think it would eventually go through. I had to sign via fax at Sunderland as I couldn't do the mileage down to Everton to do the deal."

Transfers To Be @TransfersToBe

Ward-Prowse and representative is in discussions with Liverpool over a loan deal which would become permanent in the summer. #saintsfc #LFC

Transfers To Be @TransfersToBe

We understand there is a £17.5m deal in place for the summer, more as we get it. #saintsfc #LFC

Manager Glory @ManagerGlory

Southampton FC midfielder Adam #Lallana could be on the move as Borussia Dortmund are mulling over a bid for him. #SaintsFC #BVB #BVB09

Cracking idea to get them on the road just in time for Friday night rush hour into London!

Yep, great timing! Actually, they don't usually drive up the night before for a game in London, do they? Seems slightly odd. Maybe Messi insisted that he was unveiled with the team in London?

We have, he's called Sam Gallagher

Relying on Gallagher for the rest of the season isn't sensible. He's a great prospect but that leaves us very short if we lose one or two strikers to injury! We were already struggling up front. At this rate we'll have to recall Forte :)

Well, that's the way it's going to be so you can worry that we're all going to get hit by a meteorite tomorrow or get on with it..........I know what I'm doing.

Our record in expensive "marquee" signings hasn't been that fantastic, why does everyone want us to rush out and try it again at short notice??

I am not suggesting a marquee signing or that we spend a lot of money. But someone sensible on loan would be worthwhile.

Before you ask, I have no idea as to who. But then I don't have a scouting network at my disposal.
