January 2014 Transfer news & rumours

I see that West Ham are reported to be closing in on a couple of Italians, a striker and a midfielder I think. Policy seems to be generalised throughout the PL, when all else fails buy from Italy.

To be fair Noccerino and Borriello are two decent players, the former especially. Both are involved in the national set up too. Although having said that so is Osvaldo and he's been terrible for us.

Decent players in Italian football perhaps but so many Italians seem to fall at the first hurdle in the PL, probably because they're overprotected by refs in Italy. I would never buy a footballer from Italy again if it was up to me, most of those transfers end in tears and losses for the buying clubs. However we're rumoured to have been looking at Eder from Samp, then again he's a brazilian I think, then again Gaston is a Uruguayan and hasn't really stepped up all that well. Then again as it's not a good source it could well be the other Eder from Sporting Braga, one's a winger, the other a striker.

Every signing has potential to be a flop, even established prem players move to other clubs and don't perform regardless of the fee and form they've shown at other clubs. We've done very well with Lovren and Wanyama but Osvaldo and Gaston haven't worked out for us as of yet.

Jesús Pérez on transfers: "It's not my responsibility to talk about this. We will see over the next few days."

Obviously it is down to MP really, but it might suggest a shift of stance from Thursday when he was happy to say we would not be replacing Ramirez and Lovren. Also wouldn't comment on Osvaldo's future apparently

Not the best record, but he's having a good season and probably won't cost a lot.

Italian report seems to be based off the article penned by Alex Crook in The Mirror and he got the rumour from SportsDirectNews, so I wouldn't hold your breath on this one.

According to the British press, the club has put on the market the former Roma striker. To replace it you think Brazilian Samp

ROME -After the brawl with source, the Southampton can't wait to get rid of Daniel Osvaldo. According to the Daily Mirror, the English club wants to send away the attacker already off the market in January. To do so, is willing to let him leave on loan for the remainder of the season, and then sell it in the market in the summer, when just a quote from 12 million to buy it. If Perez isn't responsible for talking about it then why is he doing the interview?

IMO its a bit disrespectful from MP to not do any media stuff for Cup games. Surely for the next round(s) he will?

Also after the couple of weeks we have had it would be good for the Manager to front up.

Why change Perez is doing ok? Don't knock MP for sticking with a winning formula. :-)

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger dismisses reported interest in Southampton's Rickie Lambert.

"We had a look at him in the Championship, but no interest now," says Wenger, whose side travel to Southampton on Tuesday night.

I've not seen any of this reported interest !? lol Rickie for Arsenal?! Can't see it.

Same principle as his playing squad selection. You got to give your back up manager a chance to learn how to do it by himself. And Perez is our number 2 man behind Mopo lets not forget.

Not sure that having him watched is the same as being interested in him....I'm sure plenty of teams have thousands of players watched.

Watched because they have an interest in them? ie they want to find out if they are worth pursuing further? I'm not convinced football clubs just send people to watch players they have no interest in would seem silly and how would you decide who to send where?

Would've thought the new head would've wanted to show the continuing ambition with a new signing, not just 'we wont sell any players' stuff. We've shown we've got a good first 11, but desperately lacking if 2 or 3 players are out in key areas. I'd say if we want to keep in the top half (and assuming we dont have Osvaldo, along with Ramirez and most importantly Lovren for upto 2 months) we'd need to bring someone else in up front or at centre back. Lets see.

Difficult time to buy players. Cortese's exit and the uncertainty surrounding the manager's future don't exactly help.

Lovren's injury could force our hand, and hopefully we'll get rid of Osvaldo and get a replacement in. But in the current circumstances it's difficult.

Ideally, the manager will sign a new long term contract and we'll do a bit of trading. But if we don't, we should be safe enough from going down, but after such a great start to the season it will be a shame to limp over the line.

Even if no one was injured. Not getting a decent CB is very poor

Hooiveld is an utter disaster at this level (as is fox)

Am posting on behalf of my hubby as he's just landed at Stanstead airport and seen a driver with Southampton Football club and the name Oskar on the board?! Mean anything to anyone.....

It could be nothing but he's intrigued!

Like it! At last an airport-based rumour.

Have to ask though.....Standstead? Strange place to fly into if you're heading to Southampton.

There's a young player from Katowice of that name, Oskar Wenike, 17 year old AM, flight from Katowice arrived at just about the right time. No idea just how good he is, not very well known, not an age category international.

Still reckon we'll play Victor at CB when he's fully fit and until Dejan is back, probably José and Maya tomorrow though.

Then we have a choice, go with Jose and Maya again at Fulham but play 3 CMs in front of them with Victor in a very deep role

or just test Victor at CB anyway. Usually played on the right though so the first option may be the best.

Look at last January's TW, we bought Forren for about 3.5 million and he never even got to play for us..mainly because he's crap. Scandinavian CBs are vastly overated, long strips of urite who may be good in the air but they're crap on the deck, where PL football is played in the main. That's why they're a dying breed in PL football.

Did Celtic?

Could work in theory but just having him back in the team will be a boost.

People forget we stayed up with Jos and Hooiveld. Hooiveld's form has been horrendous, but he did end up playing with Gazza and Fox. Far less worried when Boruc is there to shout at him, and he's still 3rd or 4th choice. I think Yoshida has been a great buy for the money.

Victor played at CB for Celtic on quite a few occasions, I suppose if you wanted to know enough you could go back and see how he did there, got the impression that he even turned out in a couple of CL games at CB.

MP on the closing of the transfer window: “We are working on some things. We have a great group of scouts working for us.” #saintsfc

If it hadn't have been for Osvaldo-gate, I'd have agreed with us not bringing faces in for January but even though he hasn't featured that much, we'd be one injury to Rickie or J Rod away from a crisis up front. Depends how ready MP thinks Gallagher is to start in the PL but a loan striker until the end of the season would reduce the risk. If Gallagher is nearly ready, investing £7-10m + wages + signing on fee on a new striker for 4 years might not be wise but we'd be taking a big risk on 31 points to offload Osvaldo - which looks inevitable - and not at least get a loan in.

A CB on loan would be good in principle but it's more risky than a forward who can act as impact players, CBs need to develop an understanding with keepers, other defenders and DMCs which can only come through matches and a pre-season, unless they are very experienced players at the top level who can lead. Such players are megabucks. So unless Lovren is out for longer than anticipated, I might give VW a go at Centre Half when fit and keep our powder dry.

Much more positive than before...

DC and/or SC perhaps?

When he referred to the balance of the squad, I think he's referring to the players we'll now be missing for lengthy spells (i.e Lovren/Gaston). So I think we'll be trying to get a CB in, which I think we should have been doing anyway....and probably another AMC type.
