Batman Posted 10 November, 2013 Share Posted 10 November, 2013 Lallana has a real chance of going to brazil. excellent technically with such high energy. These are the players we really want FA commission could do a great deal worse than having a real close relationship with southampton, if they have not already Cortese and Pochettino are excellent for English football. more so than many English managers/DoF's Cortese is obviously very good at finding managers and knowing when to make a change, we all got him wrong. Southampton are a VERY modern club Have a clear plan on and off the pitch and it is great to see Southampton are a kind of template on how england should play
positivepete Posted 10 November, 2013 Share Posted 10 November, 2013 Steve Parish was on the radio yesterday talking about the situation at Crystal Palace. He admitted they had got it wrong and they now needed to follow the model of Swansea and Southampton by setting a style for the club, getting a recruitment team in place to find the right players, and then hiring a coach to work with the players they have already got. aintforever Posted 10 November, 2013 Share Posted 10 November, 2013 It is fantastic to hear, to do what we are doing with a nucleus of English players bodes very well for the future. Imagine what our squad would be like if we had kept hold of Walcott, Bale and Chamberlin!

KelvinsRightGlove Posted 10 November, 2013 Share Posted 10 November, 2013 Funny how few threads there are slating Cortese's running of the club we see now, isn't it? I agree with the point of setting a style, having a recruitment team and then picking a manager to work with them. It is a forward thinking, long term approach that protects the club from a manager have a shocker. By this I mean, f you pick a a manager, that doesn't like the style of players at the club, you fall into the Sunderland scenario. Wholesale chopping and changing, millions wasted, manager sacked and starting from scratch again every 10 or so months. The days of wheeler-dealer 'Arry's are numbered, those that do follow that model run serious risks these days.

Its not just us, the tabloids and punditry-in-general seem to be in tactical retreat. The headlines are now all "we were wrong about Cortese" rather than " 'Arry, what a lad, eh ?" Its a very banker/business-like approach to football, he's got his 5-year investment plan and currently its on track. Never get too far beyond the fact he's building a sustainable business here, one that is attempting to take the uncertainty and luck out of the game. He sees that the Academy will continue the production line of players and they will either get results on the pitch for us or be valuable commodities to sell on. No reason why won't produce a Gareth Bale every 10 years, a Walcott/Chamberlain/Shaw every couple of years, and a W-P, Lallana, Chambers every year. Great point.

CB Fry Posted 10 November, 2013 Share Posted 10 November, 2013 Have we all behaved like you over the years then? Alpine's greatest hits in the Cortese era: We've bottled promotion to the Championship (we didn't) We've bottled promotion to the Premier League (we didn't) You're all being complacent, I can see us being overtaken by Wigan/we're going down (we didn't). But anyway, that negative old media, eh?

The headlines are now all "we were wrong about Cortese" rather than " 'Arry, what a lad, eh ?" Pundits and media have only really started taking real attention the past 6-10 months. Prior to that, they just lumped him in with any other foreign owner/chairman (most probably thought he was both). Football media, and pundits are generally pretty conservative in their nature. to them, anything different or new = bad. Especially if that new approach comes from a foreigner, or particularly a foreigner with no background in football. Just because others were we wrong, doesn't make you any less wrong. I'm sure it won't be long until you are spectacularly wrong again, and then try to completely deny it, again.
dubai_phil Posted 10 November, 2013 Share Posted 10 November, 2013 What is doing my head in (and I AM old enough to remember the Channon Keegan Ball years) is not ONLY the way the media now talk about us but how PEOPLE talk about us. I got stick from Turks when I met Bayern fans earlier this year who knew all about our style and that they had started watching us. But in recent weeks, down the pub, the numbers gathered around our own "Dubai Saints" Telly have grown, locals and ex pats, some English, some wearing obligatory Barca/Real shirts are now watching OUR games. So many after game comments now and discussions with them whereas last year we were that sad bunch in the corner stopping others watching Manarseski Citeh And just normal mates. People who have no great club or even football affinity but who have seen the odd game or are reading the stuff in the press or watching MoTD or Highlights shows. Christ I even had a call this week from a mate who is exclusively and egg chaser to say "Bloody Hell, you weren't talking sh1t when you said your lot had some England quality players down there" I have a horrible feeling that the day will come (in the not too distant furture) when one of our local Asian taxi drivers recognises our shirts coming home from the pub and says ah Eeenglish Football fans? Southampton? Christ, at this rate we may start seeing fake Home Kit back on sale on one of our trips to Bangkok! So, what do we think? Should we put bids in for Ozil, Kompany and Townsend in January?
