The Kraken Posted 9 November, 2013 Share Posted 9 November, 2013 It's so, so much fun watching the Saints right now. I missed out on the early 80s amazing side; but goodness me, this is light years ahead of anything I've seen in a Saints shirt. I've been critical of minor things in the past but, goodness me, I consider myself lucky to be a Saints fan right now.
Turkish Posted 9 November, 2013 Share Posted 9 November, 2013 Well said Krackers, wholeheartedly agree with you. One of the key things I am enjoying the most is that the players at the centre of it all are the ones who have been with us since league one and the ones that have joined en route seem genuinely pleased to be here and want to stay. Is there a better club to support at the moment?

Turkish Posted 10 November, 2013 Share Posted 10 November, 2013 With the OP in mind, is this the best Saints side EVER? No, it's the best one since the 89/90 side though, so for most people in their early thirties or below the best one in their lifetime.

Is there a better club to support at the moment? Room for a small thought for NA tonight? AP started it but NA took us to another level, 'together as one', 'blue line', etc I still see a lot of that now in MPo's approach. Players like MS/AL/RL/JF etc have been schooled in the Southampton Way for a number of years and by golly (gully?) we are seeing the benefits now. Dig Dig Posted 10 November, 2013 Share Posted 10 November, 2013 I said we had the best team in my lifetime when we had Hammond and Chaplow so you can imagine how I'm feeling now.

We've come so far so soon, but a nod to the past and the achievements of NA and his staff will always be hugely appreciated by me; I will always consider Nigel Adkins a genius. alpine_saint Posted 10 November, 2013 Share Posted 10 November, 2013 Agree with the OP. Starting to feel a (surreal) sense of pride. One of the aspects of our re-emergence that gives me most pride is how we are the neutrals favourit team again, considering the damage of the Lowe years. The English love an underdog. and English footie has long needed a shake-up at national and international level following years of Beckham narcissism

Is there a better club to support at the moment? This and this. There's a real beauty to the way the team has been built organically. I said in September that we'd had the perfect transfer window: three key players, better than what we had, straight down the spine of the team. Add to that the smooth introduction of our own youth, and the core of the side remaining together over the last five seasons. Almost a masterclass in building a Premier League squad. We are a phenomenon at the moment, let's hope we can keep going this season and beyond.

I was thinking this too although more on the lines of what Pardew did for us; if I recall correctly it was he who brought SRL and he who persuaded Adam Lallana to stay and win stuff along the way at a time when it was clear that Lallana was playing at a level well below his ability. I'm sure Pardew, in a funny sort of way, must have a fuzzy sort of felling in the knowledge that he was in at the start of our journey.
Dalek2003 Posted 10 November, 2013 Share Posted 10 November, 2013 One of the great things about Southampton is that the players are picked by 'merit' rather than by name. It is right that Osvaldo, a multi million signing has to fight for his place and it must be a shock for Ramirez to find himself right down the pecking order. We still have players from league 1 in the first team, on merit, with youngsters breaking into the team. This creates a hunger and desire to play first team football, but because first team is achieved through pure merit and everyone knows why people are there it cuts out the destructive elements of envy and resentment. The opposite to our spirit is that at Fulham.

bender Posted 10 November, 2013 Share Posted 10 November, 2013 No, it's the best one since the 89/90 side though, so for most people in their early thirties or below the best one in their lifetime. You have to remember the level the Prem is at compared to Div one in 89/90. That was a great season though; Shearer, Rideout, MLT and Rod Wallace up front. Plenty of goals but let in plenty too. SNSUN Posted 10 November, 2013 Share Posted 10 November, 2013 As the only Saints fans at work, I'm getting a lot of back-patting for Southampton's performances and results this season from colleagues that support the "big six" and...........that's just fine with me. :-D And these are the same colleagues that laughed when we got relegated in 2005 and made me feel sad. Southamton - definitely a club that affects your mood! Right now? I couldn't be more proud. Ward-Proudse even, you might say!
