Very good all-round performance, especially the first half. We were far better than against Fulham, partly because Hull were much better than Fulham (except in front of goal) and caused us more problems which we dealt with admirably. They tried to play us at our own game by pressing high up the pitch, but as soon as we scored they had to change to Plan B which gave us more opportunities. It was pleasing to see us try to extend our lead in the second half rather than sit back like we did against Fulham, when we did our best to let them back in the game. Wanyama was awful yesterday, at least 3 bad give away passes (and a 4th that he was lucky he won a free-kick) and that was before the howler that gave Hull a confidence boosting goal (to be fair Boruc was partly to blame). That was really the only down side of an outstanding performance, and we should have scored more. It would have been nice to see JRod score but his contribution nevertheless was top notch. Thought Ossie was going to get a goal as well, but Steve Davis was first in line and took his goal beautifully. Ossie looked very good when he came on, his movement and skill is top class. Adam deservedly man of the match, his performances this season have been brilliant, such a shame that the injury last season knocked him back so much after he had made a good start. At times yesterday I was reminded of past times with Channon, Ball, Williams, Keegan etc, some our play was awesome.

Only other down side yesterday was the seeming communications problems in defence on a couple of occasions, when clearly Boruc called for players to leave balls, but was ignored and this cost us unnecessary corners. Thought JRod was excellent in defence by the way, his towering headed clearance was worthy of the best CBs. Once again though Fonte was the better of our CBs. Lovren s getting all of the praise this season for what he has brought to the team, but he has made Fonte look outstanding, what a pairing they now look. Was concerned before HT that Fonte was hobbling, and then Jos came out late for the subs HT warm-up, but hopefully with 2 weeks, it was only a slight niggle and should be 100% before Arsenal.

Was Gaston dropped or was he unavailable? I cannot see whether he is in the Uruguay squad for their WC play off on Wednesday. MOTD mentioned several times that Suarez had been given dispensation to play for Liverpool even though technically he could have been prevented from doing so due to FIFA rules. Must admit I am coming round to the view that Gaston will be moved on sooner rather than later, maybe we are lining up a swap deal in January (for Banega?). Shame because I still think he will come good eventually, but his style does not fit with ours, c'est la vie.

The thing that impressed me most about Lallanas goal was the strength he showed to hold the defender off and stay on his feet, not the pace he showed

This. It's the sort of thing that wasn't quite coming for him last season. He's improving all the time and it's a joy to watch.

The best 45 mins I can ever remember watching at SMS. For all us younguns (younger than 30 anyway!) we need to enjoy this, as it's quite easily the best saints team in my life time.

A truly brilliant side, and you can't even say it's full of players over achieving either. There are genuine players right down the spine who would walk into any other club in England, in my opinion. They're young, will carry on improving and they're the right mentality.

Gone are the days of selling, now we can sit back and enjoy a team of home grown stars.

I've got a feeling we may be on the brink of something quite extraordinary in the modern game, which will make the world go ''WTF''.

does that mean we can put to bed that MP cant beat lower half teams

No, because Hull were in the top half until we played them. Also, West Brom have moved into the top half, removing the 3 points we had against them from the equation, so it's balanced out.

I'd be more inclined to think as we're 3rd and we've only played 3 top half sides that THAT suggests we can beat lower half teams.

wow

It was merely a logical response to your question based on the table positions resulting from that specific game. In reality we've already beaten plenty of bottom half sides so the question isn't being posed and hasn't been for weeks.

Gaston is with the Uruguay side, they play in Turkey and then in Montivideo, both games against Jordan of course. Probably released him early as they play on Wednesday at 6 and not at the end of the week like other sides.

Is that the biggest m.o.t.m landslide in the history of SWF?

Incredible really after such a good team performance but AL was just unplayable. He is fitter, stronger and quicker this season and that paired with the outstanding talent, we all knew he had, makes him one of the best players in the country.

Had an excellent, if not very long and expensive day out at Southampton. Steve Bruce is very generous and honest in his praise of Saints. They are a very good team. Especially at home where St Marys is a caldron of noise for the home team. Another unnecessary soft penalty against us which is a bit of a worry. No disgrace in defeat and a good benchmark for us at to the level we need to aspire, especially in our home form. UTT!

Fantastic performance, and just brilliant to be - deservedly - where we are. Wanyama's appalling lapse apart, every player was superb, and Lallana sublime, so great that he has added end product to his undoubted ability. His best ever game in a Saints (/Liverpool) shirt?

Does anyone know how to watch MOTD anywhere without waiting for MOTD2 or for it to come on iPlayer on Tuesday?

I don't but good call. It's always a long wait since we are never in the early slots on Saturday either. I find the preceding matches of no interest since they are not Saints and by the time we are on I've fallen asleep, lol.

Thats harsh. he is there to break up the play, be an outlet for the rest of his team and then to move the ball quickly to more skilful players. The man is a tank, young and still elarning. 3 mispalced passes does not make him awful. He had an average game at worst in my oppinion and still not sure the goal was 100% down to him. He could not have seen who was behind him.

If you don't know who is behind you, the last thing you do is turn blindly and let the ball run into that area. At the very least you stop the ball, protect it with your body, and move it quickly, even if it went back to Boruc.

I agree that Wanyama wasn't awful during the whole game, but that specific moment was pretty awful IMO.

First time we've been in a comfortable winning position and he looked very complacent.

Didn't his pass start off the move that led to Adam's goal?

it did indeed

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2498246/Adam-Lallana-determined-make-World-Cup.html

If you scroll down the page there is the heat map and the play sequence to his goal and it starts at number 12.

There should be no Witch hunt where Wanyama is concerned. Saturday was a mistake anyone could have made, and if his back was giving him some grief then there is is a good chance that dulled his reaction slightly.

Interestingly from the Hull point of view, considering that they gave Spurs the run around in both the league and the cup in consecutive games at The Lane. That they turned up at SMS with a formation fearful of the way we play. That losing the game in the tunnel factor if we can impose that on teams then that is a massive weapon in our armoury.

A Ex-Saints player I know, has never bet on football in his life, as he considers it a mug's game.

But he is so convinced Saints are going to win the title, for the first time in his life he has staked money on it.

silly him then, he's got carried away by emotion. We won't win the title, unless of course we're going to make 3 or 4 major signings in January "just in case". Top 6 however is something else

But you can get odds of 150 to 1 for the Saints title bet - and I think the real chances of us winning the title are greater than that. Put down £10 and think of the celebration party...

Well perhaps, then again I'm not over enamoured of making bookies £10 richer and myself £10 poorer. Don't bet myself.

For those that dont understand betting - You put £10 on and get nothing back!! PMSL

YOLO

Can't remember which thread I asked for £100 on 1st at 500/1 and 2nd at 350/1...still up for that?

By the way, you don't necessarily make "nothing back".

If you put £10 on Saints to win the League at the start of the season, you could now sell that betting slip for about an £80 profit.

(alternatively use betfair to back and lay your bets)

First half performance was stunning and worth every mile of the appalling driving conditions I had to contend with through Ringwood and into Southampton on the M27 pre-match! The passing, movement and cohesion was a joy to behold. Gave a silly goal away which Victor will learn from and Osvaldo and Davis picked us back up to nearer our first half performance level. Adam rightly gets the plaudits for a stunning display and goal, some of the Hull fans applauded when he was subbed which was a nice touch, but some of the other performances, including the full backs, Lovren in bringing the ball out from the back, J Rod, Rickie etc were also exceptional. The fourth goal was almost as good as Adam's third, J Rod flick to Clyne and that first time cross is superb. Even better is Davis's control and finish in a single movement.

Good gate too but those watching on a stream missed out because the atmosphere was great, let alone the standard of our football which is on a par with that 83/84 team IMO. No wonder Hodgson enjoyed his afternoon on the south coast.
