Anyone else nervous about the wheels falling off?

Probably been a Saints fan for way too long and therefore cynical based on Saints in the past. These days, seem to have a continual gnawing feeling that it is all going to come to an end (positivity, points, etc) because our current status is so unSaints like.

In 38 years, I cannot ever remember so much positivity about our club: both internal and external. We seem to be the current darlings of the national press and not a day goes by without at least 1, if not 2, glowing articles talking about the club, players, Academy, etc.

The cynic in me keeps thinking this can't possibly last......but then I didn't expect us to be where we are after 10 games.

I'm so used to Saints wilting when the going gets tough that, right now, have to continue pinching myself that we are where we are (and not just riding high in the table). It really feels so unSaint like.

Feeling positive......we really could be on the verge of something special but the cynic/pessimist in me doesn't want to believe this as we have been let down so much in the past.

Truly hope for 3 points tomorrow and can't wait to watch the game on NBC.

Cmon you reds!

I'm not remotely bothered about it, we should be alright to stay up, anything else is a bonus.

We have only played 2 of the top 10 and 8 of the bottom 10 though - just getting this in early so all the knee-jerkers can back off when we inevitably start losing a few games in December.

I think you're expressing the thoughts and fears of the majority of Saints fans. I have to pinch myself to see what I'm seeing and reading isn't a dream. It's all too good to be true. So many things could go wrong but let's all hope for once our time has finally come, that Markus is up there putting all the strings and putting his wishes in place for all of us.

Not quite that; but before we signed Ossie I had us down for 11th and it seems that was a little pessimistic. We're not just earning good points but playing very well too; if that part stops then I'll be more worried but I think we're comfortable enough in this division now for a mid-table finish to be expected.

Great OP.

And yes, panicked when the lucky cargo shorts (to annoy Turks) were in the wash for the first time in weeks - we still won.

Panicked when Begovic scored. Panicked that our Internationals may burn themselves out or get injured doing some new weird sh1t training with England.

Panicked that Eric was coming to a game in the pub. Panicked that Damascus Saint was coming to watch a game having only ever seen us lose 4-1

For us it's simple, we've broken it down into easy chunks. Firstly the Twitmeister is holding the 40 point party. We've already invested in a 4.5L bottle of Sobiersky Vodka for that.

Then the 50 point party is at our Lucy Pinder clone's flat.

Eric is panicking about cooking Thai green gurry and having enough Bottled Real Ale for the 60 point party he may have to host in March or April.

I'm panicking about having to buy 10Kg of Prime Aussie Rib Eye for the 70 Point party BBQ and wondering where the hell I will get all the Krupnik Honey Vodka

And then Barasti have promised to host the 80 point party with free beer.

So, the ONLY person sweating is the Twitmeister, but hey, we got the booze and Easter looks good. All the rest is just pie in the sky dreamland bullsh1t.

And MP says the same. We dream, we plan, we don't EVER expect

The 'wheels falling off' scenario for me is our owners walking away and some sort of financial issues if we were to have a lot of debt.

As much as I am optimistic about the future of our club Premier League football and continuing to give youth players a chance is all I want from Saints. Anything else is a bonus for me.

Cortese and the Liebherrs walking away from the project would also worry me, not that I think it will happen any time soon, but as people have said before we are debt free up until a point and Markus probably set up some sort of trust for us should the worst happen. And that's not to say we wouldn't be an attractive proposition for another investor, because we would.

My biggest concern is assembling a brilliant team and seeing is disassembled as players decide they'd rather go to a "big" club. Again, not that I think it would happen any time soon, but it could happen in the not too distant future. As it stands though, we're safely back in the Premier League with little to no chance of relegation with the current squad - I think relegation is a very distant worry for us. (Touch wood - weirder things have happened...)

More than anything I'm afraid of Cortese and/or the Liebherrs leaving the club - that could spell trouble. Long as they're here, I think we're in safe hands.

As for this season, it's inevitable we'll go on a bad run at some point. What matters is when and how long it lasts.

It's going to take more than 10 matches to shift 40 years of supporting Saints and expecting us to do the difficult easily and the easy difficultly. When we started with the high press last season we had some great results, but we did seem to burn out pretty quickly and one of my concerns is that we do the same this season. I also worry about our best players being picked off by the top teams - but that's where we have to trust that our scouting network can identify affordable players of a similar or better quality.

Have to say it's great being a Saints fan at the moment though :)

Don't worry about that, 4th place is inevitable now we're out of the league cup.

I see how trolls like you work. You must have had a whole other agenda planned and ready to post if we has either:

1) Lost with a full strength team up there

or

2) A valuable player like Wanyama, Lovren, Ricky or Spider got a bad injury

We are an above average Premier League side who has had an easy start, that's all.

no games are easy in this league

away to the leaders (and beating them) was very hard

I suppose in the 2nd half of the season, when we are doing well that it will be because we are playing all the top sides at home

and having been around even longer than that I know exactly what you mean.

But I can recall times in the past when Leeds and Liverpool were " ordinary " Div.2 sides, and even Man.Utd had their ups and downs between Euro triumphs, and Man.City's name was just a joke.

We have come to a place where the players seem to go into a game fearing no-one. It will, it seems, take a bit longer for a lot in our fan base to get the same motivation.

Just imagine how Arsenal fans must be feeling...top of the Premiership and looking anxiously over their shoulders. In the Premiership you're either waiting for your bubble to burst or for your team to realise it's potential and start winning. Don't ever be complacent enough to accept a comfortable mid-table position...life would be so dull.

yes but we did better against the two in top 10 (both away) than many of the bottom 10 so what does that say?

How do you define 'wheels coming off'.. given our F/A of 11/4 we are likely to lose games 1-0 as winning 1-0.. today maybe the day. Does not mean the wheels have come off.

I will be happier once we have stuffed a team at home 4 or 5.. as we should have done v Fulham

It says our style is designed to work best against the top teams who tend towards a passing game and isn't always so effective against teams who don't do that - it might also have something to do with the pure amount of mental effort it takes to play the full press that we're more motivated to do it when we're playing top sides, who are also less likely to park the bus against us, at least at the moment.

one win away from having the same amount of points as QPR got in total last year

even if we trail off and finish in the bottom half, this year has already been a success. even if you don't consider a core of this squad has made this sort of rise in the last four years
