JWP's crossing and set piece delivery

A glimmer from tonight's poor performance - yet another assist from Ward-Prowse.

Looking through our matches so far this season he's already totted up this little lot.

Via:

Free kick - Sunderland (h)

Corner - Bristol City

Corner - Man United

Corner - Fulham (h)*

Cross - Stoke

*albeit helped on by Lambert's head

He also has the 2nd best accurate crossing total in Europe with 29 (42.5% successful).

Also, in case anybody missed it:

His crossing and consistency of delivery has a certain David Beckham ring to it. I've not seen a player put it on the plate every, single, time as often as JWP does.

He doesn't need to beat a man, he can whip it in from 30 yards onto their forehead. time and time again.

It's been a long time since we've had a decent deliverer of the ball, and boy we have a good one now.

The guy is class.... Looks a real talent and such improvement from last season

Thought he was going to be too lightweight but hes stepped it up and now key 1st team player

Seems like a top bloke too

His vision is really first rate. He played one superb cross pass tonight that I don't think a lot of other players would even have seen, let alone hit.

I'm annoyed about tonight but if it helps bring players like him and Chambers through to the first team, we're doing the same as Arsenal and I can't fault that too much...

Delivery is very like Beckham. You can understand why the manager sometimes plays him on the right when he's probably better in the centre. Again similar to what happened with Beckham.

An interesting point. If you're willing to take away the context of it being a cup competition and a chance for silverware (I'm sure many won't - I'm undecided) then there's certainly merit in treating a match like tonight's as a glorified development team outing.

It's definitely not as bad as putting out a squad merely consisting of has-beens or never-weres as some clubs tend to. In the absence of a Chelsea-alike depth of squad it remains a valid option.

Really been impressed with JWP this season. His delivery is surperb, something we've been screaming for too! What another massive talent we have. He'll been an England regular in the future. One of the many joys this season watching him develop.

Delivery is getting better and better. Has really stepped up this year after a slow end to the season. Great to see.

Want to see him start to score goals now.

As long as he keeps created goals at this rate, scoring them isn't as much of a problem.

Should be a regular starter now IMO.

Would expect him to be a regular starter for England in a few years too. Himself and Wiltshire in the midfield would be quite handy.

What a prospect and his set piece delivery is awsome. A key player for us.

Sure I read somewhere he has shunned alcohol and the party scene to concentrate 100% on his footie if so fair play to the lad as it must be easy to live the high life with the wage he must pick up.

Also didn't he reject the chance to go out on loan at the start of the season?

Has the potential to be a player where the sky is the limit

It's not just the delivery and set pieces he's good at, his contribution to the press is fantastic. He keeps chasing and harrassing the opposition for the whole 90 minutes.

Strangely he did make me smile last night, takes over from Gaston and his polite fluffy corners, and spanks in a few of hard and menacing corners. He delivers another punishing free kick that we scored from. Then in the dying minutes a moment of human fallibility, outside the box in space he decides to have a crack at goal and smashes one into the empty seats behind the goal....................... He will probably be working on that in training if his dead balls this season are anything to go by.

Amazing how many people think that "alcohol and the party scene" is the norm. If you've been a potential pro footballer for getting on for 10 years and brought all the way through the youth system with the education you get and the knowledge of sports science and nutrition there is nowadays, you'd probably never even try it for fear of ruining your chances compared to someone who doesn't. And if you never try it, you'll never be attracted by it. Plus once you're a Prem player there's the hassle of being recognised even if you do want to go out, and you have a load of cash to entertain yourself in other ways.

It's just not worth the hassle, any idiot can go out and get bladdered.

Interesting to see that Saints are happy to let established pros go to make room for kids with potential (eg Puncheon and Richardson) - it isn't something that happens at many clubs.

You have to say though that none of them when given the chance look shabby or out of their depth, and best of all try bloody hard. In our recent dark days you so longed for a player to bust a gut for the shirt. Manufacturing our own priceless.
