robbie1717 Posted 5 November, 2013 Posted 5 November, 2013 Afternoon! A friend of mine has written this article so I thought I would share it with you all. Many thanks. http://www.tibsnews.com/blogs/southampton-the-small-time-club-with-big-ambitions/ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Miltonaggro Posted 5 November, 2013 Posted 5 November, 2013 Christ, that 'article' is wrong on so many levels. As we have seen many times on this board 'size' is subjective, but the 16th biggest stadium and 12th biggest attendance in the football league along with the various 1980s highs, would suggest that 'small time' is probably a badly chosen strapline. I'm thinking the folly of youth and pathos, like Educating Yorkshire but with a poor grasp of reality / the English language, rather than a speech impediment!...

Miltonaggro Posted 5 November, 2013 Posted 5 November, 2013 See, it's given me a stammer, and used up my 'three strikes'....
DuncanRG Posted 5 November, 2013 Posted 5 November, 2013 Not the worst article in the world. It's been written 800 times in the past three weeks, however.
Bearsy Posted 5 November, 2013 Posted 5 November, 2013 I was surprised to learn that Morgan's form is mercurial.
Solid Saint Posted 5 November, 2013 Posted 5 November, 2013 I was surprised to learn that Morgan's form is mercurial. Ha, this surprised me to but then.... mer·cu·ri·al (mr-kyr-l) adj. 1. often Mercurial a. Roman Mythology Of or relating to the god Mercury. b. Astronomy Of or relating to the planet Mercury. 2. Having the characteristics of eloquence, shrewdness, swiftness, and thievishness attributed to the god Mercury. 3. Containing or caused by the action of the element mercury. 4. Quick and changeable in temperament; volatile: a mercurial nature. We live and learn!
Bearsy Posted 5 November, 2013 Posted 5 November, 2013 (edited) Yeah interesting, I thought it meant like unpredictable. I withdraw my sneering criticisms! Edited 5 November, 2013 by Bearsy clarifications yo
Solid Saint Posted 5 November, 2013 Posted 5 November, 2013 Yeah interesting, I thought it meant like unpredictable. I withdraw my sneering criticisms! So did I, I've seen the word used to describe playmaker types i.e. David Ginola etc but never a holding player. "eloquence, shrewdness, swiftness, and thievishness" Sums Morgan up pretty nicely tbh.
Mowgli Posted 5 November, 2013 Posted 5 November, 2013 I'm sure it's all original but can't help feeling I've read it all before somewhere.....
SaintBobby Posted 6 November, 2013 Posted 6 November, 2013 (edited) Morgan isn't "mercurial"....the term is typically used to describe flashes of brilliance in footballers, e.g. the 4th point in the definition. Indeed, even the highlighted 2nd point suggests a certain "smash and grab" cunning. Le Tissier was mercurial. Schnedierlin is "solid"....basically the exact opposite of mercurical. It's as if the author of the piece just stumbled across a poncey adjective and felt he had to use it somewhere. I also don't think you can be "tipped" for a "surprise"....it's one or other really....if people are expecting you to do something, it isn't surprising if you then do it. And as for..."But can Saints really make it into Europe this season? Well with the way the season has begun in the Premier League who could realistically rule them out?" Answer: Me. Well, pretty much. 7th might just get us a Euro place, but probably not. I'd say we're less than 25% to qualify for Europe. Not ruled out, but very unlikely. We're 16/1 to win the League Cup and about 16/1 to get to the FA Cup Final. If I ever read again about signing top players being a "clear sign of intent" rather than because they are good at football, I really will have to murder someone. Pretty much at random. It's that cliched and annoying that I think random violence is now probably acceptable. And, as for Swansea, well, okay, they have done really well. Top half and a League Cup win against a League Two team. Nice. Really nice. But you'd think they'd won the damned Premiership by the way it's put in this article. The9 Posted 6 November, 2013 Posted 6 November, 2013 I'd always taken "mercurial" in football terms to refer to flashes of greatness and soaring above the abilities of mortals, in the sense that he was a God but a volatile one.

Basically this. Basically the exact opposite of Morgan Schneiderlin. (who is consistently and truly wonderful....a 7 or 8 every match)
lordswoodsaints Posted 6 November, 2013 Posted 6 November, 2013 Basic rubbish IMO, 27 years in the top flight but the writer makes it seem that we struggled for most of it,also more could of been written about the young English talent that we have rather than focusing on the imports.
